The Green Hills of Tyrol - Theme and Variations - Philip Sparke (Euphonium and Piano) |
The Green Hills of Tyrol was commissioned by two Swiss parents for their son to celebrate his 20th birthday, in 2019. The request was for a piece suitable for use in a solo competition possibly using a Scottish or Irish Melody, and compose a Philip Sparke suggested an old-fashioned Air Varie might be a suitable idea. The piece follows the well established formula of theme followed by four variations. The history of the original melody is fascinating and although it is well known as a bagpipe tune it's background is Austrian or Italian, rather than Scottish.
Here is a super new solo, unknown to many as yet from the pen of the composer who understands perhaps more than any other the Euphonium in the 20 and 21st centuries. A superb piece of writing. With a gorgeous middle variation!!
This is going be great fun to learn and perform.
