In Gardens of Peace was composed in response to a commission from Micah Parsons in 2014 to commemorate the life of his great grandfather, Henry Nichols, killed in the battle of the Somme in 1917.

The music attempts to recreate the special and unique aura which provides burial grounds and cemeteries-there is a peaceful tranquillity, but also a deep sense of tragedy and loss. The euphonium is the ideal solo voice to articulate this mood, with its soulful depth of sound, and its ability to saw passionately over the ensemble, both characteristics which are developed throughout the piece.

The music ends positively, with the wish that hope can come from desperation.

As recorded by Steven Mead on his CD: Lyrical Virtuoso with BB Buizingen (BOCC125)

The version of this work with brass band accompaniment is also available on this site.
