Here is the Euphonium Concerto by Edward Gregson, just published with brass band accompaniment.

This is certain to be a highly sought-after concerto and one that advanced players will want to study and perform in the future.

 Program notes by the composer:

The Euphonium Concerto was commissioned by the Euphonium Foundation UK and was written for, and dedicated to, David Childs. Lasting some 22 minutes, it is a large-scale symphonic work in both its structure and scale. Its three movements, subtitled Dialogues, Song without Words, and A Celtic Bacchanal, explore the full range of the technical, musical, and emotional scope of the euphonium.

The first movement, Dialogues, is concerned with contrast and development, using as a reference point a five note musical cypher (BACH – B flat, A, C, B natural – followed by a tritone F). This cypher is used in various guises throughout the movement and beyond and acts as a ‘pillar’ in an ever-changing musical canvass. The movement’s sonata form structure contrasts highly charged rhythmic ideas with a lyrical second section, where perhaps the euphonium takes on the cloak of a cello with its soaring melodicism. This leads to a central section, with scurrying semiquavers culminating in a frenetic fugal climax before returning to the opening ideas, now further explored and developed.

An extended cadenza, with brief but dramatic interruptions from the timpanist, leads directly into the slow movement – Song without Words. Here, the peaceful mood of the opening tutti section leads to a wistful ballad for the soloist, which pays nostalgic homage to another era long since gone. The opening music returns, this time developing into an intense climax, before quietly sinking into a reprise of the opening music, with the soloist’s ballad now transferred from minor to major. The movement ends quietly and leads without a break into the final movement.

A Celtic Bacchanal is, as the title suggests, a wild dance that takes on some of the character of Celtic folk music (the dedicatee is a Celt, and the composer half-Celt!). Whilst primarily being a technical tour-de-force, a lyrical central section once again exploits the euphonium’s singing qualities, reaching a majestic peroration before subsiding into tranquility. The folk-like dance starts up again, this time culminating, via a reference to the first movement, into an exuberant and life-affirming coda.

The work exists in FOUR versions, with symphony orchestra, wind orchestra, piano (available on this site)and here with brass band accompaniment

Be My Love was written for the film The Toast of New Orleans in 1950, and was nominated for an Academy Award in the same year. The story revolves around a rough-and-tumble fisherman from the Louisiana bayous, who is gifted with a wonderful, if unschooled voice. He is discovered by the director of the New Orleans French Opera (David Niven), and falls in love with the prima donna, a refined young soprano (Kathryn Grayson). The film has sunk into obscurity, but Be My Love survives as one of Mario Lanza's best known signature songs.

This version for euphonium and brass band was expertly crafted by Ray Farr in the late 80's for the Grimethorpe Colliery Band

This arrangement has firmly established itself in the euphonium repertoire over the years, and remains one of Ray Farr's most popular arrangements.

The composer Joel Collier writes: "In 2017 I accepted a new job opportunity that required me to move halfway across the country. While it was an exciting opportunity, it meant leaving behind all the friends and colleagues I had grown to love.  A Simple Song was a way for me to express this bittersweet goodbye, both sad to leave people behind, yet hopeful of what was to come.  The premiere was given with The National Capital Band, where I had served as principal euphonium since 2011, less than a week before I left.  It is dedicated to those I left behind."

In Gardens of Peace - Philip Harper - Euphonium with Brass Band accompaniment

In Gardens of Peace was composed in response to a commission from Micah Parsons in 2014 to commemorate the life of his great grandfather, Henry Nichols, killed in the battle of the Somme in 1917.

The music attempts to recreate the special and unique aura which provides burial grounds and cemeteries-there is a peaceful tranquillity, but also a deep sense of tragedy and loss. The euphonium is the ideal solo voice to articulate this mood, with its soulful depth of sound, and its ability to saw passionately over the ensemble, both characteristics which are developed throughout the piece.

The music ends positively, with the wish that hope can come from desperation.

As recorded by Steven Mead on his CD: Lyrical Virtuoso with BB Buizingen (BOCC125)

Ireland is the home of many fine folk songs, none more charming perhaps than 'The Sally Gardens'. The composer first encountered it in the arrangement by Benjamin Britten. The music has a poignant quality which is rather haunting, reflecting the tone of regret in the last lines of each stanza: "She bid me take life easy, as the grass grows on the weirs, But I was young and foolish, and now am full of tears'.

The main theme of this music comes from Mozart's opera The Magic Flute, a very well-known melody which is sometimes associated with sacred words. It is a beautiful tune which lends itself to variation treatment including these very light-hearted examples. While working on this music, the composer had the idea of incorporating references to other well-known Mozart themes, again, with a rather tongue-in-cheek approach. The result is a high-spirited, flamboyant solo that will be fun to play and to listen to.

When He Cometh

Bandmaster Howard Evans writes of this work, “The song from which this melody comes was originally written for one of the Salvation Army Songster Leader's Councils Festival that took place in the Royal Albert Hall in 1989. Whilst the words are often viewed as a children’s song, they are very poignant. Although the song formed the basis of a major

band work entitled 'Elegiac Variations', I have often been presented with requests for a solo version of the melody. This recording, and the work of Steven, provided the inspiration and impetus to complete a solo version presented here on this disc. I dedicate this solo version to my two lovely daughters, Sarah and Louise."

Here is Howard Evans's beautiful new solo Pastorale, My Joy and Crown, composed for Steven Mead for the UFO album that he recorded with Brighouse and Rastrick. It's dedicated to Steve's father Rex Mead.

Pastorale; My Joy and Crown (sleeve notes from the UFO CD)

Howard penned this arrangement of the beautiful hymn tune Ascalon in the spring of 2019 and dedicated this euphonium solo to Rex Mead, the father of our soloist. Howard is close friends with Rex and Sylvia Mead and has also worked closely with Steven Mead, notably on two previous CDs, Brassin’Mozart 2006 and Locomotion. The tune was originally a Silesian folk song, and the German text were printed for the first time in 1842.  Howard Evans is a Mus.B (Hons) graduate from the University of Manchester. He also holds LRAM, LTCL and ARCM (Hons) diplomas. As a postgraduate pianist at the Royal Northern College of Music, he gained a Diploma in Performance Studies. He completed his Performance based MA (Dist) from Salford University, majoring in conducting. This was followed in July 2009 by his subsequent award of ‘Doctor of Musical Arts’ (DMA) from Salford University. Howard has held posts including the National Bandmaster for the Salvation Army in the UK, Director of Music for the SA in the Netherlands, and conductor of the Amsterdam Staff Band. From 2007 to 2015 he held the post as Director of Classical Performance at the University of Salford. He was also Bandmaster of the Boscombe Salvation Army band from 2002-2019. Howard was often worked as a guest conductor for a number of major bands, including: appearing with the Leyland Band and Grimethorpe Colliery Band to name but two. In addition, he has undertaken work as an examiner for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music in Singapore, Macao, China, Poland, Oman and the UK, since 1998.

Here is the superb UFO Concerto by the Dutch composer Johan de Meij in the version for euphonium and BRASS BAND.

The composer writes of the work:

UFO Concerto, my first solo work for euphonium and wind orchestra, is not a traditional concerto in the classical sense. It consists of five movements that are thematically related to one another. The opening chord may sound familiar to some listeners: This chord and the first theme are based on the same five-note chord used in ‘Extreme Makeover’ and ‘Planet Earth’ in 2005: a major triad with an added 4th and a 7th. This chord has been obsessively present in my head ever since -- I could not resist using it again! Both the chord as well as the main theme make appearances in various shapes and forms throughout the entire piece.

I Andante – Con moto
II Giocoso – Vivo
III Andante cantabile
IV Vivace
V Alla Marcia – Vivace

Jason Ham, solo-euphonium player with the West Point Band (USA), initiated the consortium for UFO Concerto. He performed the world premiere on February 15th, 2012 in Baltimore (MD) with the Peabody Wind Ensemble, conducted by Harlan Parker. Jason also invited British virtuoso David Childs to join the consortium and play the European performances. At the request of both players, I also made a version for euphonium and brass band. David premiered this version with The Cory Band, conducted by his father Robert Childs at the 2012 RNCM Festival of Brass in Manchester, and recorded the wind version on CD [Extreme Beethoven] with the Banda de Lalín.

Originally composed for solo marimba, this popular version of A Little Prayer was made in 1998 following Evelyn Glennie's collaboration with Black Dyke Band during the recording of their Grammy nominated Reflected in Brass CD.  Robert Childs, then principal euphonium with Black Dyke, requested Evelyn's permission to make the arrangement for his son, David.  The composer obliged, and Robert presented the score and parts to his son as a seventeenth birthday present.

Evelyn Glennie revealed: "When I wrote this chorale for marimba, it expressed my spiritual feelings and displayed a pleasantly relaxed dimension of the instrument.  Over the years my exposure to brass bands has filled me with wonder; their musical diversity is considerable.  I had no hesitation in giving A Little Prayer to Robert Childs to bring this little melody to life."

Having composed the work when she was only 13, Evelyn continued: "As a child I would never have believed that such a short and simple piece of music, would come to grow this much.  A little Prayerserves to prove that one should always bet their chips on what they believe in, for nine out of ten it will be worth it!"

After twenty years of exclusivity, Prima Vista Musikk is proud to make this beautiful arrangement available to all.  A Little Prayer provides the perfect reflective interlude for concert or devotional use by euphonium soloists and bands of all abilities.

Dreamsong was commissioned by Geir Ulseth and the Nidaros Brass Band from Trondheim, Norway. After a short introduction, the soloist introduces a rather nostalgic melody, accompanied by the lower brass parts. A fast central section is then played by the band, which leads to a climax. Eventually, the main melody played by the solo cornet and flugel horn returns, overlaid with an ornamented counter-melody from the soloist, who then closes the piece with a short cadenza.

A really beautiful new solo, very 'playable' from the pen of the band world's favourite composers and one who has contributed so many quality works for the euphonium over the years!

Sérenade Napolitaine - Ruggero Leoncavallo/Vertommen

Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857-1919), the composer of two such popular tunes as Vesti la Giubba and the song Mattinata didn’t have the easiest of lives as a composer. In 1899 Leoncavallo was constantly moving and being hunted by creditors.  He returned to Paris to prepare I Pagliacci at the Opéra.  While there he sold the editor Choudens, Les deux Sérénades (the Sérenade Français and his Sérénade Napolitaine) for 400 francs (about 2000 euro in current currency) for both songs.  The Sérénade Napolitaine is an unadulterated love song that sounds to be an authentic Neapolitan folk song.   In the Sérénade Napolitaine the merry troubadour sings for his beloved and begs her to receive his confession and answer his prayers, because life is to love.

Another big 'hit' from the Lyrical Virtuoso CD was this wonderful piece of music by Mahler.

Here is it now published for euphonium and brass band (piano acc also available)

Ich bin der welt abhanden gekommen (I Am Lost To The World) - Gustav Mahler/Luc Vertommen  This is one of the most beautiful of all songs in the history of classical music. Ich bin der welt abhanden gekommen (1901) is one of the five Rückert-Lieder by Gustav Mahler.  The Rückert-Lieder are a song cycle based on poems written by Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866). The first four songs of the Rückert-Lieder were premiered on 29th January 1905 in Vienna, with Mahler conducting himself. The poetry’s tone of peaceful resignation is captured and amplified in Mahler’s music. He was a master at composing music to convey complex emotions with seemingly simple melodic lines.  The transparent interweaving of the instrumental and solo lines and the subtle fluctuation between inner tension and repose represent one of Mahler’s supreme achievements. In the brass band arrangement Luc Vertommen captures the subtle colours and the fragile Mahlerian orchestration in a colourful version for brass exploring the illuminating colours of a harp, the melodic percussion and muted brass to the full.

A tremendous challenge for the advanced soloist !!!

As heard on Steve's Lyrical Virtuoso album BOCC126

This is the version for euphonium and brass band. The version with piano accompaniment is also available on this site.

Niccolò Paganini composed his Second Violin Concerto in Italy in 1826 and performed the premiere himself the following year at La Scala, Milan. The third movement, Allegro spiritoso, owes its nickname, La Campanella to the little bell which Paganini prescribes to presage each recurrence of the rondo theme. The character of the bell is also imitated in the orchestra and in some of the soloist's passages featuring harmonics. This movement has served as the basis of compositions by other composers, such as Liszt and Johann Strauss. La Campanella is renowned for its intricate and technically demanding solo passages with flashy finger work, numerous double-stops and constantly bouncing bow.  It was such a crowd pleaser that Paganini often chose to perform it as a stand-alone showpiece. La Campanella has become a popular display piece with transcriptions available for other solo instruments.  Luc Vertommen challenged Steven Mead to the impossible by arranging La Campanella as a euphonium solo.  For this virtuoso arrangement Luc Vertommen had to convert the multi-octave original full of seemingly impossible acrobatics into an (almost) playable version for a brass instrument.  Luc Vertommen was inspired by the shortened version played by Leonid Kogan (1924-1982) one of the greatest representatives of the Soviet School of violin playing. Steve really enjoyed this ultimate workout.  The sound of a little bell will always remind, even haunt him, of the countless hours necessary to master this work!

The EuphoniumStore is proud to introduce a stunning new work from the pen of Martin Ellerby. This is a very advanced work for very mature performers!

Martin Ellerby: The Four Elements (Partita for Solo Euphonium and Brass Band) Commissioned by and dedicated to the Black Dyke Band (Musical Director Professor Nicholas J. Childs) and Gary Curtin (euphonium) with funds made available by the John Golland Trust.

This is the version for euphonium and brass band.

Composer Martin Ellerby writes:

"The first performance was given by these forces in the RNCM Concert Hall, Manchester, on 23 January 2015 as part of the RNCM Festival of Brass.

The Four Elements was written for Gary Curtin and the Black Dyke Band as part of a recording project of my music for brass band, released in 2015.

Having previously written a large scale concerto for the euphonium I decided to write something much more concise though still enabling the soloist to display flair and lyricism in equal measure. I aimed at around two minutes per movement, which meant I would be creating a set of miniatures, and based each on one of the four elements of earth, water, air and fire though they are primarily given their Latin names of terra aqua aer ignis in the score. The term is used to indicate that the work is a collection, or suite of pieces, and in keeping with former examples uses both song and dance forms to provide suitable musical structures.

1. Terra (Earth) an intrada set in ABABAC form in which A, for the band, is built on a 12 note row, B is a duet between the soloist and elements of the band and C an enigmatic . The ‘elemental’ interval of a perfect 5th proves dominant in all aspects of the opening movement.

2. Aer (Air) cast in the form of a fleeting scherzando - the music makes play between the rhythmic possibilities of contrasting common and compound time signatures giving it an unsettled edge.

The flavour is light and breezy, possibly somewhat oriental in manner.

3. Aqua (Water) a lyrical interlude or intermezzo , where the soloist has more of a free reign to their lines and the band support in a delicate legato style.

4. Ignis (Fire) - the virtuosic fianel celebrates the spirit of a pagan dance. Much use is made of mixed metres and the cornets and trombones remain muted throughout giving a metallic quality to the ensemble. Just prior to the climax proper there is heard a fiery statement of the traditional Dies Irae (‘Day of Wrath’) melody in the form of a band interlude.

One other point of interest is that of the percussion section which I have tried to vary in each section, acknowledging their vital contribution to the overall sound world. ‘Earth’ has darker combinations of timpani, marimba, bass drum, a low suspended cymbal and tam-tam. ‘Air’ utilises two antiphonally placed glockenspiels, a bright suspended cymbal and triangle. ‘Water’features delicate tuned percussion consisting of vibraphone, a ‘guest’celesta, crotales and a binding mark-tree. ‘Fire’ exploits most of what has not gone before with rhythmic, punchy bongoes, side drum, xylophone and timpani plus a set of tubular bells, cymbals and tam-tam in the closing stages."

Full brass band set - Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins

£74.95 - £73.50

This highly popular concerto has already become a favourite of many euphonium players, and now here it is in the full version with brass band.

This work was commissioned by David Childs who gave the first performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Last Night of the Welsh Proms in 2009. 25 minutes in duration, the concerto is in four movements rather than three, loosely following the 'head-heart-feet-whole body' format of (humanist) symphonic design. Jenkins has stated, 'As is my wont, I've endeavoured to make the concerto somewhat quirky and "off the wall".'

It is a work overridingly designed to connect with the listener, arguably Jenkins' greatest gift and a task it achieves with considerable aplomb. The individual movements also stand alone equally well when presented as individual solo items.

This version, with brass band accompaniment, is a fantastic addition to the repertoire for any serious 21st century euphonium player!

'Neath the Dublin Skies was written for David Childs and first performed by him with Cory Band during their tour of Ireland in September 2007. The music is certainly Irish in nature featuring an atmospheric introduction, ornamented reel, lyrical melody and a high-spirited jig. With multi-phonics and lip glissandi amongst the challenges set for the soloist, the music is a lot of fun to perform and a welcome addition to the euphonium solo repertoire.

Diamond Concerto - Philip Sparke - Brass Band Set

Here is the hugely popular Diamond Concerto (Concerto No.3) by Philip Sparke in the version with brass band accompaniment.

Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Mörschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.

The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead’s special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career.

The village of Mörschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this is was decided to give the commission a local connection by chosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:-

1 EARTH STAR

is rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.

2 OCEAN DREAM

uses a varied quote from the composer’s Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.

3 BLUE HEART

was written, at Steven Mead’s suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.

Concerto for Euphonium - Stephen Roberts

 The composer writes:

"The Concerto for Euphonium was written in the summer of 2011 after hearing a series of euphonium recitals whilst examining at various music colleges in the UK. I was reminded of the virtuosic potential and wide range of the euphonium and immediately started to write a movement based on the songs of a particularly vociferous (and virtuosic) blackbird in my Harborne garden. Two further movements swiftly followed and the piece came together very quickly, with the piano score being completed within just five days.

I chose to use a lyrical musical language that was familiar to many euphonium players rather than something overtly modernistic or atonal and have pushed some technical boundaries as a challenge.

The first movement is the most 'meaty' and is based on sonata form, but does not follow the traditional tonal format. It is rather eclectic in style and celebrates typically British sounds, but all the themes stem from the blackbird resident in my garden and the opening fanfare is the strident territorial call that brightens summer days. The 2nd main subject (tranquillo) is hyper romantic with rich chromatic harmonies redolent of the 20th-century British light music genre. There are 2 cadenzas: one just before the recapitulation and the other before the virtuosic coda.

The slow movement features the upper register of the euphonium in a manner reminiscent of Baroque concertos where brass players were called upon to sing in the high harmonics. It is essentially a chaconne with the solo part sounding related modal material at a faster tempo over the slow-moving chord progression.

The finale is an ebullient rondo based on the Mexican huapango dance style, which alternates duple and triple meters. The coda recalls that of the first movement to conclude with a virtuoso flourish."

This Concerto is available on this site with piano, wind band and brass band accompaniment. On this page you can order the version with brass band accompaniment (solo part, full score and full set of parts)

It is a very difficult work for the soloist, but very rewarding to study and play. It can be heard on Steven Mead's Diamonds CD, where he performs this concerto accompanied by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force Band.

Solo part is in both treble and bass clefs.

Move Their Mind - Euph and Brass Band - Stan Nieuwenhuis

£45.00

Here is a brand-new solo that is set to become a great target for all ambitious and advanced euphonium players.

Stan Nieuwenhuis' Move There Mind was commissioned by Glenn Van Looy. For his first solo album he was looking for new interesting euphonium solos written by young composers, to expand the existing repertoire. Move There Mind became the title track of Glenn's first CD, that he recorded with the Gunnedah Shire Band in Australia in 2011.

Move There Mind symbolises the quest for a new sound and style for the euphonium. It's a challenging piece that consists of 3 parts. A furious opening pushes the soloist to the limit of range and speed. The dramatic introduction mellows into the slow melancholic 2nd movement. Despite the calmness there is unease to be heard through grace notes and fast runs. As earlier movements move from one to another without a break with the theme of the final movement gradually introduced through wide intervals, and multi-phonics in the lower range at high speed. We hear the theme disguised in various forms before leading to a dramatic climax. This is followed by a return of the theme before the music rushes to a chaotic finale.

This solo is available with brass band accompaniment (here), and also with piano accompaniment (to be found elsewhere on this site).

Solo parts are supplied in: treble clef Bb, bass clef in C, bass clef in Bb

In League With Extraordinary Gentlemen (BB) - Peter Graham

£69.95
Reference:  SMBBGM03
Stock:  In stock In stock
Quantity:

In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen combines two of composer Peter Graham's life interests - composition and 19th century popular fiction. Each of the concerto's three movements takes its musical inspiration from extraordinary characters who have transcended the original genre and have subsequently found mass audiences through film, television and comic book adaptations.

The first movement follows a traditional sonata form outline with one slight modification. The order of themes in the recapitulation is reversed, mirroring a plot climax in the H.G. Wells novella The Time Machine (where the protagonist, known only as The Time Traveller, puts his machine into reverse bringing the story back full circle).

The Adventure of the Final Problem is the title of a short story published in The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle. This is an account of the great detective's final struggle with his long-time adversary Professor Moriarty at the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland. The music takes the form of a slowed down ländler (a Swiss/Austrian folk dance) and various acoustic and electronic echo effects call to mind the alpine landscape. The final bars pose a question paralleling that of Conan Doyle in the story - have we really seen the last of Sherlock Holmes?

The final movement, The Great Race, (available separately) follows Phileas Fogg on the last stage of his epic journey "Around the World in Eighty Days" (from the novel by Jules Verne). The moto perpetuo nature of the music gives full rein to the soloist's technical virtuosity. As the work draws to a conclusion, the frantic scramble by Fogg to meet his deadline at the Reform Club in Pall Mall, London, is echoed by the soloist's increasingly demanding ascending figuration, set against the background of Big Ben clock chimes.

In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen was first performed in the brass band version by David Thornton and the Black Dyke Band, conductor Nicholas Childs, at the RNCM Concert Hall Manchester on January 30, 2009.

Bravura is a companion piece to the composer's earlier euphonium display piece Brillante, utilising the same traditional 19th century "fantasy variation" structure, familiar to generations of brass soloists. Folk songs from the four corners of Great Britain are featured; Oranges and Lemons, (England), The Blue Bells of Scotland, The Minstrel Boy (Ireland) and the famous Welsh anthem Men of Harlech.
The solo is a conflation of the original version, written for the 2002 Royal Albert Hall Gala Concert, which followed the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. On that occasion the combined talents of virtuosi David Childs, Derick Kane, Steven Mead and David Thornton (with guests Robert and Nicholas Childs) were on display, each personalising the cadenza section towards the end. This version incorporates a published cadenza, though soloists should feel free to improvise their own material at this point.

One of Mozart's best-loved and most performed pieces is the lively ‘Rondo Alla Turca' from the Piano Sonata in A minor, K331, written in Paris in 1778.

In this arrangement the Rondo is preceded by a little-known adagio, K580a, which existed previously as a fragment scored for solo clarinet and three basset horns.

This completed version of the adagio is in sonata form, its main theme closely resembling Mozart's famous motet Ave verum corpus.

The Allegro Appassionato opus 43 for cello and orchestra was the first work that Camille Saint-Saëns wrote after marrying Marie Laurie Emilie Truffot on February 3th, 1875. Saint-Saëns claimed to compose music as naturally as ‘an apple tree produces apples' The Allegro Appassionato was composed around the same period as his more famous Fourth Piano Concerto, the Danse Macabre and the String Quartet. The piece remains very popular amongst cellists these days mainly because of its ‘showy character' with a lot of rising semi-quavers in the first theme. Although the piece breathes the romantic atmosphere it is fast moving and virtuoso. This delectable miniature creates the impression that it could go on forever, and it seems to have a real dynamo of energy in its relatively short time span. There are only very small sections of calm in this exciting work.

Tchaikovsky's ‘Andante Cantabile' is one of the most famous and inspiring romantic movements. Is was either the singing of a workman or baker - there are two versions of the story - that introduced Tchaikovsky to the folk melody that he immortalized in his slow movement of his String Quartet nr 1, opus 11, composed in 1871. Clearly he was not put off by the tune's unromantic words, ‘Vanya sat on the divan and smoked a pipe of tobacco'. An immediate hit, the movement was quickly extracted from the quartet and published in numerous arrangements through which it became one of Tchaikovsky's most famous short works. It didn't only inspire Johan De Meij for a fantastic and extreme make-over (see recent brass band test-piece!) , Tchaikovsky himself made an arrangement for cello and string orchestra sometime between 1886 and 1888 for cellist Wilhelm Fitzenhagen (1848-1890) who premiered the Rococo Variations in 1877.

A number of classical composers have used themes from Carmen as the basis for works of their own. This Carmen Fantasy is a virtuoso showpiece in the tradition of fantasias on operatic themes. Like in the opera, the soloist must not only have a great range, but also exhibit superior dramatic skills in order to portray Carmen's character. Almost every technical challenge for the Brass soloist is contained here or what is more the soloist must fully understand beautiful song like aspect and stylistic demands of this music.

An accessible and enjoyable showpiece for soloists of all ages. The concerto's three movements are in a tuneful, melodic style and bravura passages are mixed with others designed to exploit the singing qualities of the instrument.

The first movement is a vigorous allegro in which the short, pithy motifs of the opening theme contrast with the broad sweep of the second subject. A short cadenza-like passage yields to a high-spirited episode before a reprise of the opening ends the movement quietly.

The second movement opens with a warm, romantic melody which is soon taken up by the soloist. A short animated section gives way to the earlier tutti theme, this time with passionate decoration from the soloist before the music gently unwinds in a tranquil coda.

The finale has a bouncy, festive feel. After the first subject runs its course there is a brief journey through a more contrapuntal style, before a spirited presto moves into a compound episode before returning to the opening idea. A jubilant coda brings the work to a conclusion.

Its extended length seeks to explore that fine combination of sustained lyricism and explosive virtuosity which typifies the modern euphonium in the most expert hands. There are two parts which divide into four movements.

Part One opens with a sonata structure movement which alternates between a melodic style and some rapid passage work. The intention of the music is a firm and cerebral development of the opening fourth-based motifs. At the tranquil conclusion of this music the second movement bursts in - Zeibekikos - a rapid and extrovert Greek Island dance complete with plate smashing!

Part Two re-examines some of the opening material surrounded by cadenzas, and centred upon a short and sustained adagio. The final movement opens with a rapid fugal section which moves inexorably towards a climactic return of the music and tonality of the open

Giuseppe Antonio Capuzzi (1755-1818) studied violin with Nazari, a pupil of Tartini and composition with Bertoni. He was active in Venice as a performer in theatres and in St.Mark's. In 1796 he visited London and in 1805 he settles in Bergamo where he was active as violinist and professor of violin at the Istituto Musicale. He was highly regarded both as teacher and performer and was equally proficient as a composer.

The autograph manuscript of his ‘Concerto per il Violone' has been found in the British Museum and transcribed for double bass in 1969 by Rodney Slatford. Already in 1967 the late Philip Catelinet transcribed the ‘Andante and Rondo' for lower brass instruments which became a popular exam piece for lower brass instruments.
The term ‘violone' is known as early as 1520 and means in modern terminology the double bass viol, the direct ancestor of the double bass. Historically the term has embraced a variety of meanings and even in some Italian sources, the cello. This could perhaps explain why this hidden gem works as well for euphonium as for all lower brass instruments. Those euphonium players familiar with the Catelinet version will discover a virtuoso opening ‘allegro' movement and some interesting changes in technique and articulation in the well known ‘andante and allegro' parts.

The original, published as Hummel's Opus 94, dates from about 1820 and includes themes from Mozart's Don Giovanni, The Marriage of Figaro, Die Entführung aus dem Serail, and Rossini's Tancredi.

Grand Air de Zaïr is an eight minute recitative and aria from Saverio Mercadente's opera ‘Zaïra'. In the 18th century when Italian opera dominated Europe we find the 30 year old Mercadente leaving Italy in 1826 to try his fortunes in Spain and Portugal. He composed seven operas there before returning to Italy in 1831. In 1830 he composed a new work for Naples, the opera Zaïra based on one of Voltaire's finest tragedies. The theme is the conflicting claims of religion and love, for Zaïra is torn between the allegiance she owes to the Christian faith in which she was born and the love she feels for Sultan Orosmane.

All the bel canto, lyrical phrases and cadenzas are present in this Italian virtuoso show piece in a style that could be compared as a mix between Rossini's ‘Una voce poco fa' and ‘Largo al Factotum'.

Reinhold Glière (1875-1956) was a direct heir to the Russian romantic tradition. The most important element in his style is expressive melody and this is best typified in his Opus 35, written in 1908. It is a collection of eleven short pieces for various instruments and piano revealing his love for a good melody. The Humoresque, opus 35 nr. 8 and the Impromptu, opus 35 nr. 9 are both dedicated to bassoonist Ivan Romanovich Porubinovski. The Humoresque has an almost old English feel about it, quite stately and character in fact, and should not be rushed.

In the Impromptu the euphonium plays an almost improvised and charming melody exploring the cantabile character of the instrument, and although it was originally written for bassoon the long arching melodies suit the euphonium perfectly.

The Euphonium Virtuoso Collection is a new series of euphonium solos arranged by Luc Vertommen especially for Steven Mead and offers exciting study and performance opportunities for every aspiring soloist.
Top quality arrangements available in different versions for soloist and brass band, symphonic wind band or piano accompaniment.

Camille Saint-Saëns' Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso, opus 28 is his first work for violin written in 1863. Since its premiere it has continued to be one of Saint-Saëns most popular compositions and has been performed by notable virtuosi including Jascha Heifetz, Isaac Stern and Maxim Vengerov.

In the 1850s, Saint-Saëns became acquainted with a fellow musical prodigy, the Spanish violinist Pablo Sarasate (1844-1908). Sarasate was 19 when Saint-Saëns wrote the Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso for him in 1863, and the technical challenges of the work attest to the violinist's prowess. Saint-Saëns did not publish the piece until 1870, but Sarasate frequently programmed it in his concert engagements throughout Europe and the United States. The slow introduction, marked Andante malinconico (melancholy), becomes gradually more animated and ends in a mini-cadenza that opens the rondo, Allegro ma non troppo. The syncopated theme stated by the violin has a distinct Spanish flavour with some idiomatic Spanish rhythms and featuring huge leaps and brilliant arpeggios. The orchestra opens the bridge to a contrasting lyrical theme, con morbidezza (with tenderness), played in 2/4 by the soloist over the 6/8 time of the accompaniment. Even the rondo theme reappears in a more introspective mood, before the orchestra bursts once more into the bridge passage. After the final statement of the rondo the violin moves from a short cadenza of triple-stopping to a brilliant coda, undoubtedly written as a showcase for Sarasate's virtuosity. This work was popular enough that both Georges Bizet and Claude Debussy made arrangements of it. This version for euphonium is undoubtedly affected by the playing of Sergei Nakariakov of this classical showpiece. At first glance the violin part seems impossible for a few valves. The adjustments make some valuable hours of study for both technique and musicianship and in the end this version sounds as if originally conceived for the euphonium.

The Last Sleep of the Virgin (Le dernier sommeil de la Vierge) was the only piece to survive in Jules Massenet’s lifetime from an oratorio in four scenes based on episodes from the life of The Virgin Mary from the Annunciation to her death. It was first performed at the Paris opera in 1880. La Vierge enjoyed modest popularity in its day but the atmospheric ‘Dernier Sommeil’, the prelude to the final section was encored and soon found its way into popular orchestral programmes. It became one of Thomas Beecham’s favourite ‘lollipops’ and could become the euphonium’s answer to Massenet’s massive violin hit ‘Meditation’ from ‘Thaïs’.

Six Studies in English Folksong (BB) - Vaughan Williams/arr. Vertomme

The Euphonium Virtuoso Collection is a new series of euphonium solos arranged by Luc Vertommen especially for Steven Mead and offers exciting study and performance opportunities for every aspiring soloist.

By the time Ralph Vaughan Williams had created his Six Studies in English Folk-Song in 1926 he had been travelling around the country collecting English folk songs for a quarter of a century. Along with Cecil Sharp, he preserved for posterity many examples of this great English musical tradition. These small studies are jewels and were originally written for the cellist May Mukle, who gave first performance at the Scala Theatre in London on 4 June 1926. The touching lyricism of these short and beautiful studies, so fresh and loving, are perhaps an off-shoot of his preoccupation with some of the best folk songs in his opera Sir John in Love (1929). These slight but attractive pieces are not literal transcriptions of folk-melodies, but are based on well-known tunes, freely treated and ornamented, whose identity can be easily traced. The first study is a setting of the Norfolk tune Lovely on the Water , in which the tune emerges naturally from the accompaniment , well suited to the lyrical qualities of the euphonium. Spurn Point is a fine tribute to this unique place with sand and shingle banks in the Britsh Islands on the Yorkshire coast. Van Dieman's Land is another fine slow melody and the original name used by Europeans for the island of Tasmania, now part of Australia. The Lady and the Dragoon is another tune in a slow tempo. In the fourth study 'She borrowed some of her mother's gold', the arpeggio accompaniment rocks gently back and forth, occasionally acting as a kind of descant for the euphonium. The last of the set, As I walked over London bridge ('Geordie') is a 'rum-ti-tum' affair with its air of innocent jollity, its varied accompanying texture, and its surprising ending, is so terse that one regrets the composer did not treat the tune more expansively. But then perhaps the succinct wit of the setting would have been lost.

Valse-Scherzo, Op. 34 (BB) - Tchaikovsky/arr. Luc Vertommen

£68.00 - £61.95
Reference:  SMBBBP17
Stock:  In stock In stock

Tchaikovsky's Valse-Scherzo, a sprightly violin showpiece, was written to fulfil a promise made to Iosif Kotek. Exact information on the work on the Valse-Scherzo does not survive. It is only from letters from Iosif Kotek to Tchaikovsky that an approximate date for the piece might be established as early 1877. Later that same year Tchaikovsky wrote his Fourth Symphony, and the opera Eugen Onegin, and it is thought by this time the Valse had already been completed. The Valse-scherzo was performed for the first time on 21 September 1878 in the Trocadero Hall , Paris at the third ‘Russian Concert In Paris', by the violinist S. Barcewicz, It is possible that the waltz was partly or wholly orchestrated by Kotek after Tchaikovsky completed the version for violin with piano. This of course makes it a supreme challenge for a brass player especially the ‘moto perpetuo' section near the end. The challenge for the brass player is to capture beauty and elegance of the waltz despite the technical difficulties.

There are numerous sets of variations based on Paganinni's famous violin piece, but surely this is the only one written as the result of a wager on a football match! The composer wrote these variations for his cello-playing brother Julian in payment of a bet on a Leyton Orient match and they later formed part of the show Song and Dance.

Peter Graham's arrangement of some of the best-loved sections ideally suits the euphonium.

Walking on Music (BB) - Roger Derongé

£44.00 - £40.95
Reference:  SMBBBP11
Stock:  In stock In stock

In 2004 Roger Derongé wrote his Walking on Music for the 10th edition of the Church Concert of his own brass band ‘Bravoer’. To mark this occasion they choose a soloist that had some affinity with the history of the band. Belgian euphonium player Stef Pillaert had as a young boy been a member of the ‘Bravoer’ music camps and had been soloist with the band on a few occasions. Roger Derongé choose to showcase the lyrical side of the instrument and the accompaniment is very austere. In the brass band version the cornet players can even spend some time at the bar. The title explains the way every euphonium virtuoso would like to play this little gem, as easy as ‘walking on music…’ It is a work demanding quite a sustained lyrical approach from euphonium soloist but well worth the effort. Audiences will love this.
