25 Duets for Low Brass - Anthony O'Toole (bass clef only)

£16.50
Reference:  SMCMP25D
Stock:  In stock In stock
Quantity:

A great book of duets for either two euphoniums, or euphonium and tuba, or baritone and euphonium.

Very well, written with some nice rhythmic, stylistic and counting challenges. Also explores the Mixolydian and Dorian scales.

Not too difficult and well worth the effort.

About the Author

Anthony O'Toole , born 1988 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, holds a bachelor's degree in Music Theory & Composition from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he studied composition with Daniel Perlongo, Jack Stamp and David Martynuik. He is currently a master's student in Composition at George Mason University where he studies with Mark Camphouse. Anthony O'Toole's music is unique and fresh with its intense rhythmic energy, lush jazz-influenced harmonic language, and his talent for highly effective and colorful orchestration. Mr. O'Toole has written more than 100 works for almost every medium and began writing music in his early teens. In high school his interest in composition stemmed from his studies as a percussionist and love of performing. He also became a competent multi-instrumentalist learning piano, viola, saxophone, clarinet, trombone and tuba. Although he is largely self-taught as a composer he credits many of his teachers for being mentors and advocates of his music. While at IUP he had the pleasure of receiving lessons and attending lectures from guest composers such as Cindy McTee, Samuel Hazo, Christopher Marshall, Frank Ticheli, Clark MacAllister, Richard Danielpour, Bruce Yurko and Drew Hemenger. After graduation from IUP in 2011 he worked full-time as a composer while also working as an orchestrator and arranger for 2 years before beginning his MM in Composition at GMU. In the last 5 years Mr. O'Toole has seen success as a composer winning numerous prizes which include the Grand Prize in the 2012 Garritan Composition Contest for his orchestral work 'CA-91' as well as other accolades and honorable mentions. His music has been featured in the GIA Publication 'Teaching Music Through Performance in Band' (Solos with Wind Band Accompaniment edition) and a large amount of his music is published by Cimarron Music Press, Euphonium.com and Bandworks Publications. In particular, his band music has become rather popular and has been played by some of the finest ensembles including the University of North Texas Wind Symphony, The Indiana University of Pennsylvania Wind Ensemble and the United States Coast Guard Band. His band music and chamber music have been performed all over the country and internationally in Canada, Australia, Tawain, Portugal, Britain, Brazil and Singapore.

Phil writes: These euphonium-specific studies were inspired by Hiram Diaz (that’s right-The President’s Own euphonium player!), who had me pull out all the stops to explore the amazing versatility of this instrument. You’ve never seen anything like this before! BC or TC Bb versions now avaliable!

I've always been fascinated by the Euphonium and their owners. They seem to be stuck between so many different worlds, both technically and musically. They can play gorgeous melodies as well as lightning, fast, technical passages, and often do, not only in the same piece, but sometimes in the same line of music for years, the great Robert King tried to get the Boston Symphony Orchestra to endow a Euphonium chair and make that voice take up permanent residence in the orchestra. Certainly, the orchestral works that exist in the repertoire by Strauss, Holst, and others that score for Euphonium (or tenor tuba) are richer for this addition. The fact that Mr King was not successful in his quest, speaks more to the orchestral worlds inflexibility than to the versatility of this fascinating instrument. Certainly the musical ensembles that regularly use this voice find it indispensable. In my many brass ensemble arrangements for the Washington Symphonic Brass, the euphonium part was one of the most fun to imagine.

In the pages of this book, I offer up a small addition to your ever increasing and expanding repertoire. My hope is that it will find a place on your music stand as a book. That's both fun to play and challenging. Here's to the next 200 years of Euphonium!"

Steve Mead writes: this book is highly recommended. It's very challenging as lots of euphonium-inspired classical influences can be detected, and it's all over the instrument! Fantastic to study and work up to a high level.

100 Days of Trumpet Practice - Rex Richardson - Practice Book (TC)

£40.00 - £37.50
Reference:  SM100DP
Stock:  In stock In stock

100 Days of Trumpet Practice is a solid practice ritual. A true recipe book covering all aspects of trumpet (brass) playing. Rex Richardson establishes the structure of a disciplined routine. A concept that reveals the meticulous and efficient daily work of one of the great virtuosos. Ear training and mouthpiece buzzing, sound production, flexibility, articulation, fingers, range, improvisation, reading and transposition, repertoire, scales and arpeggios.

Renowned as a performer and composer of new, genre-busting music, Yamaha Performing Artist Rex Richardson has been called “One of the finest virtuosos of our time” (Brass Herald) “a standout soloist with the power, range and flexibility to rival Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw” (DownBeat), and “among the very best trumpet soloists in the world today” (Journal of the International Trumpet Guild).

A professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) since 2002, he has served as International Tutor in Trumpet at England’s Royal Northern College of Music and at Austria’s JAM Music Lab University.

Although conceived for the trumpet, we believe that this method has many many outstanding benefits for Euphonium and Baritone players also. Highly recommended.

This is an excellent new addition to the euphonium/baritone method book repertory.

76 pages of outstanding studies and daily drills, refreshingly original, from the pen of composer Daniel Hall.

From intermediate to advanced. High quality publication.

Micah Dominic Parsons writes:

Over the course of the past year, I have been working alongside Daniel Hall to create an accessible exercise book for amateur musicians. In our modern world, we are becoming increasingly busy with work, family and hobby commitments and finding the time to practice each day especially after a busy day can be difficult.

Over the past seven years, I have tested and adapted my own practice routine to fit around my own commitments which has developed my own personal interest in developing a method book which can aid in encouraging the individual to develop their own daily practice routine which fits around their daily commitments and also maintains and improves their current standard.

The MDP Method Book is an amalgamation of a number of personal practice routines which I have developed over the past seven years to fit around my daily routines.

The book contains a range of exercises which cover all the basic technical aspects of practice and is designed to be used for fifteen minutes over a six or seven day period.

The MDP Method is split into sections which can be tackled either as a whole in one practice session or individually working through the book working on one exercise within each section for a total period of thirty minutes. The book is designed to accommodate all musicians from those working at a beginner level to those working at a more advanced level.

Emile Joseph Trognée was born on 4th of July 1868 in Tirimon, Belgium. He studied trumpet at the Brussels Conservatory. After winning a European competition in 1902, he became solo trumpet and cornet at the Mariinskiy Theatre (now called Kirov Theatre) in St. Petersburg. He spent the rest of his life in Russia, working at the Mariinskiy for 25 years, and he died in 1942 of hunger during the three year siege of Leningrad by German troops.

Trognée was an outstanding musician. A well-known Russian conductor, Karl Eliasberg, wrote: “Trognée had a unique feeling of ensemble; his sense of dynamics and musical phrasing was remarkable. His sound was never forced but always bright, powerful and even in all registers. He was also a great master of very soft legato playing and well-known for his performances of the “Ring”, “Rienzi” and “Lohengrin” as well as of the operas of Tchaikovsky and Verdi.”

Trognée was respected by both musicians and composers. He advised Rimsky-Korsakow to make some changes in the trumpet part of his opera the “The Legend of the invisible City of Kitezh” (the well known difficult trumpet passage in the symphonic poem of the “Battle at Kerzhenets”).

Trognée taught at the Baltic Fleet Music School from 1911-1917 and at the Rimsky-Korsakov Music School of St.Petersburg from 1928 to 1941. He wrote several works for trumpet and cornet. His “Fantasia-Caprice”, published in Moscow in 1946 in Tabakov’s “Elementary and progressive Trumpet Method” was especially popular for many years.

The “Studies for Trumpet”, published 1932 by Triton in St.Petersburg were also well known. These 15 final etudes have been dedicated to Mikhail Tabakov (1877-1956), the father of the modern Russian trumpet school. Serguej Bolotin, the Russian trumpet player, preserved them together with Trognée’s complete muscial work. These studies, as well as the works of Vassili Brandt or Oskar Böhme, have greatly contributed, to the history of the Russian trumpet school.

About 15 Grandes Etudes

This edition of Trognée' s studies gives us an opportunity to study the work of someone who, like Vasiliy Wurm, Vasiliy Brandt and Oskar Böhme, made a great contribution to the history of the trumpet in Russia.

This is one of Steve's favourite books, since MANY years, and here now for the first time at the Euphoniumstore.

About Brass Playing Concepts

The Work

The art of the brass musician is measured by the extent, the intensity and the quality of his mastery as well as the influence of his personality. The phenomenal mastery of Arturo Sandoval has aroused the admiration, respect and even the incredulity of audiences, of his colleagues and of young students. Not a few imagine that there must be sorne kind of special trick involved here ...

The approach proposed here by Arturo Sandoval - as perhaps that of every artist who has made his way to success and can verbalize his experience - may appear simple. In fact, it is. As simple as is the solution to every problem, once it is found...

Arturo Sandoval was born November 6th,1949 in Artemis, province of Havanna, Cuba. At the age of fifteen he entered the Cuban National School of the Arts where he studied classical trumpet. In 1965 he met the great Russian trumpet player Timofey Dokshidser and was deeply impressed by his artistry. From 1974 to 1980 he played with the famous Cuban Irakere big band. Then he created his own band, started to travel to foreign countries, getting finally the international recognition he deserved. In 1990 he left Cuba for good and settled in the USA. He has since toured all over the world, recording many CDs and his fame is growing constantly. His phenomenal virtuoso trumpet playing and his great talent as a pianist and film music composer are admired worldwide by classical and jazz musicians.

49 pages. With special sections devoted to breathing, lip buzzing, the mouthpiece, warming up, the tongue, the attack, pedal tones, muscles of the body, endurance, diet and health, the teeth and their configuration, flexibility, relaxation and more!

Arban Studies 1-14 - Ed. Gomm and Mayes (solo part, piano part and 2CDs) Treble Clef version

£25.95
Reference:  SMBWPAT
Stock:  In stock In stock
Quantity:

Here is a superb new release from Brass Wind Publications which is sure to bring a new and fresh dimension to your technical practice, with these famous 14 Characteristic Studies, found at the back of the Arban Grand Method.

As well as a beautifully producted solo part and piano accompaniment, this set includes 2 two highquality cds with the piano accompaniment (with a real pianist and real piano!), each in three different tempi: 1. slow practice 2. performance tempo 3. fast performance tempo!

From the publishers:

For nearly 150 years Jean-Baptiste Arban's 14 studies have been an essential part of a brass player's practice routine. Arban's original parts contain many inaccuracies and inconsistencies. Whilst we had no intention of creating an 'Urtext' edition, we have attempted to make each study's phrasing, articulation and where necessary, dynamics consistent with itself, without losing the character and intentions of Arban's manuscript. We, therefore, chose not to add dynamics at the beginning of studies where Arban has omitted them, as you will quickly discover the right dynamic (for you) on practising the piece. You may also, as performer, wish to change or ignore our suggestions, for that is what they are and you must feel free to do so.

This edition includes imaginative piano accompaniments written to reflect the nature of the solo part and enhance the soloist's practice whilst lending these studies also to the concert repertoire. Our hope is that you will gain more from playing these great studies 'with accompaniment’ rather than the traditional way 'without'.

The CD that accompanies this edition contains John Alley's accompaniments in three tempi. One for slow practice, one for general performance and then one for the virtuoso! Also included are stylish performances of all 14 studies by leading UK trumpeter Paul Mayes which are retained for guidance in this euphonium edition. In order to produce an artistically cohesive CD Paul Mayes’ performances are a mix of the two featured performance tempi

Highly recommended!

Misa Mead has created this outstanding 75 page book of 40 extended technical studies for euphonium, that covers all tonalities and the full extended range of the instrument.

It is definitely not a book for beginners, but would suit good intermediate level, advanced and professional players.

Misa originally created 40 technical videos which she put on social media, and such was the overwhelming response to these, this book has now been written. This is how this wonderful book originated.

This book covers so many areas of technical study, and allows the student of freedom to work at them at their own pace and increase the tempo as facility comes.

This book covers all aspects of performance technique: different articulation exercises, range, intervals, finger studies, rhythmic studies, harmonic studies. This book is almost unique in the range that it demands, and reflects the range that is demanded by the modern euphonium player.

Misa writes: Technical skills for brass players also help with musicality. When we have developed the perfect technique we can play any music as we want. I hope this book helps you to enjoy your music-making.

You can see all the exercises being performed by Misa is an extended video: https://youtu.be/VI94RvcHbog

All are great fun to play, and are excellent for intermediate level students to work on alone, or with their teachers.

This is the second volume of Euphonium Passion, composed and arranged by Gilles Martin.

Once again this book makes for very interesting and relaxing practice, but of course it is a step up in difficulty from book 1, and will make a nice challenge for high school and intermediate players. The accompaniment is a delight on the ears, and as with volume one, you have a piano part, and also this CD backing, which you can also perform. I'm convinced this series is going to prove to be very popular, as it is incidentally already in France.

The two books in the series are very special in terms of what it offers the musician. This book, volume one, is really aimed at a young, junior high school player, but I'm convinced that many older players will also enjoy this too. The CD accompaniment is very well done, and many of the pieces are in the kind of pseudo-French folksong style, but with some very interesting harmonies and twists that make for very interesting study and hopefully enjoyable performances. There are 18 pieces in total here and arrange in duration from about 2-4 minutes for each piece.

Now your family really won't mind you practising! This is not guarantee, but I have sincere feeling about this!

Perhaps the most famous instrumental vocalises, now you can enjoy them with piano accompaniment on the supplied CD.

The Bordogni Vocalises have been transcribed by David Schwartz for trombone or euphonium. This volume includes 12 more advanced vocalises along with an audio compact disc with Bordogni's original piano accompaniments for all 12 vocalises.

The perfect way to develop your 'vocal' style !

Difficulty level 3/6

Supplied with solo part in BC and accompanying CD.

These relatively new additions to the literature can really be useful to young players. With the employment of the piano CD the students will have to learn to keep good time and will also learn better intonation at a faster rate. The trombone part as transcribed from Bordogni is slightly different at times from the Rochut editions, but Schwartz does a good job indicating these differences. He also provides a list for comparison between the two edition numbers. Other benefits of the book are that there are 3 etudes provided again in different keys at the end of the book, and 2 etudes with faster tempos (although in one of these cases it is difficult to make music at such a tempo). Schwartz also provides a nice overview of Bordogni and concisely explains his edition. Overall this is a welcome addition to our literature, for we now have the ability to rehearse these famous etudes with a CD accompaniment, and it is likely that some may use these for public performances. Grade 2-3.

Comments from Teachers

"David, you have made a monumental contribution to trombone instruction, now and for the future."

- Richard W. Bowles, Gainesville, FL

"David, Thank You! My students and I love it. In my studio Bordogni/Rochut will be phased out and replaced with Bordogni/Schwartz. Thanks for providing this valuable service to the trombone community."

- Nathaniel O. Brickens, University of Texas at Austin

"David, I have my students working out of book one of your set and they are enjoying it immensely. Now that they have the CD versions you have done, they don't know how they ever played them without --- I had one girl yesterday who sang the piano intro before she began playing --- pretty darned neat!"

- Peter Ellefson, Indiana University

"David, Congratulations on your Bordogni editions. The Bordogni-Rochut vocalises have served as the musical basis for most trombonists' legato and "singing" standards. How wonderful it is to have them available in new editions which include CD piano accompaniments. Trombonists have the opportunity to develop and refine their harmonic understanding in the practice room."

- Tom Everett, Harvard University, Founder ITA

"David, You'll be happy to know that I have officially stopped using Rochut. All my students are now directed to use your editions. The accompaniments make such a difference in their practice and I appreciate the scholarly information and advice."

- Mike Hall, Old Dominion University

"David, Good for you! Your series of Bordogni etudes with accompaniment CD are a great addition to my active teaching and practicing materials. I use them to promote good intonation, rhythm, musicality, memorization and ensemble techniques. The simplicity of the accompaniments provides structure but places the musical responsibility upon the trombonist. Buzzing along with the CD in the car is a fun and easy, no-hands approach that not only serves as a good warm-up, but improves clarity of pitch and flexibility with pleasant melodies rather than rigid exercise."

And now : To Buzz , for euphonium and trombone

It's the same book as the highly popular book released two years ago, but now in the euphonium/trombone/baritone range.

Thanks for making this book for us Alessandro !!!

The 'To Buzz' book  with accompanying CD  was released at the ITEC2012  by the Italian tuba solo artist and teacher Alessandro Fossi.  His presentation and demonstration of the method there brought widespread acclaim and most people who were in that seminar immediately bought this book afterwards!  Although it is was originally designed for the tuba has been republished for euphonium and trombone players. This is the new updated version in bass clef.

If you have never had a proper buzzing routine with your mouthpiece this will give you every single exercise you could possibly imagine.  It is an extremely well put together a method with over 100 pages of examples and explanations,  in English and Italian.

The CD provided is a data CD and all the MP3 examples need to be extracted before you can play them through your MP3 player, or iTunes etc.  I highly recommend this book and congratulate Alessandro on all the work that he has done in researching and putting together these outstanding exercises.

Some background from the composer/ performer:

To Buzz - The study of the mouthpiece is a practice recognized by the world's most authoritative exponents of brass playing; the benefits that can be obtained with a proper and systematic implementation are enormous. We can safely say that all noticeable problems on a technical level, starting from the production of sound, to legato and staccato, can be solved more effectively with the study of the mouthpiece before even dealing with the instrument. This is because we directly work at the source of the sound: the vibration.TIPS:Usually you use different mouthpieces for the bass tuba and the contrabass tuba (as for other instruments like the trumpet): they change the depth, the volume of the cup, the throat and the backbore, however the biggest difference between different mouthpieces is surely given by the inner rim diameter, since the vibrating surface of our lips will be different compared to inside the mouthpiece itself; so it is recommended (as with the instrument) to devote time to the study of different mouthpieces that we use regularly. To stimulate the vibration more efficiently, you will be able to perform studies in different ways:1 -  only with the mouthpiece,2 -  attaching a rubber tube about 10 centimetres (or more) in length to the throat of the mouthpiece,3 -  using a spirometer to see if the vibration is supported by an adequate amount of air.Points 2 and 3 are the ones that I mainly recommend particularly when we perform a study in all keys. In this book you will find many exercises that require the use of glissando. This is because with this technique you can play an interval without changing the position of support of the mouthpiece on the lips; it is the muscles themselves rather than the movement of the jaw that will help us, particularly in the lower register, as, reacting to this stimulus, they will move flexibly to reach the desired pitch. The glissando will become a real workout for our lips, and that will allow us to develop our sound, as well as making us understand the correct setting for every single note (opening of the mouth, jaw position, angle of the mouthpiece) exactly and involuntarily.Initially, the main purpose of these exercises is to work on those frequencies where the sound stops, so that our lips are responsive producing a vibration at any pitch, especially when we’ll play an interval (small or large); with study these points will be reduced even more, and we will shift our attention to the homogeneity of our glissando. This will lead us to have a better command of our lips and the vibration coming from them.Remember while playing, that the most important thing is not the first or the last note of an interval but what it is in the middle, try to pay much attention to play the better glissando you can.Keep in mind also that this study will bring enormous benefits in the quality of your legato playing, as the glissando can to all intents and purposes be considered a legato in slow motion.Keep strictly to the rhythm when you play with the accompaniment on the CD: at the start of each track you will hear a metronome that keeps track of the tempo and a piano sound that will give you the pitch of the first note to play. Inhale steadily for two metronome clicks, trying to store as much air as possible, play the phrase and then breathe in the same way again. I usually tried to leave the 2 / 4 required for breathing between one musical phrase and another; if you find a longer break, such as 4 / 4, relax for the first 2 / 4 and inhale steadily for the remaining two.If you can not play all the tones of an exercise, especially the lower and higher pitched ones, do not worry. Get to where you can and try to get a bit further each day; do not expect to be able to do everything straight away or to be able to make giant steps; be consistent and rigorous in your study and learn to appreciate every small achievement.Always remember that our first objective must be the quality of what we do. Clearly, as I said, to get results we need consistency, only then can we see the benefits of this practice, these exercises should therefore be incorporated into our daily study plan, considering them as an integral part of our technique routine. You can start playing with the mouthpiece for about ten minutes (one of the longer exercises, or two or three or more of the shorter) before your practice routine.Once you are able to master all the etudes of this book you can continue adding more keys to each exercise both in the upper and lower register.I suggest you also use this method with the instrument, in this case, the exercises involving the use of glissando will be performed with the legato; you will have a full technical study plan, with which you can also exercise by playing with the basic accompaniment which will give you a reference for the rhythm and intonation.I wish you much success.

A Practical Guide to Wind Band Excerpts for the Euphonium

Robert Pendergast and Ryan McGeorge

This collection of annotated euphonium excerpts contains composed or arranged works for band that feature prominent solo passages or difficult technical and/or musical challenges for the euphonium. Excerpts were chosen not only based on the merits of the music, but for their recent use in military and civilian band auditions. Additionally, the authors have made efforts not to repeat excerpts found in Barbara Payne's Euphonium Excerpts from the Standard Band and Orchestral Library (another excellent and proven resource).

This volume includes marches, transcriptions and original works with notations and practice/performance suggestions from the authors. Composers include Alford, Filmore, Heed, Jewell, King, Sousa, Panella, Chance, Grainger, Grantham, Holsinger, Holst, Jacob, Kozhevnikov, Nelson, Nixon, Smith, Sparke, Vaughan Williams, Auber, Berlioz, Chabrier, Gershwin, Glinka, Liszt, Makris, Respighi, Schuman, Smetana, Verdi, Weber and Walton.

A series of appendices include suggestions for how to practice excerpts, tips on how to choose a good recording, a list of well-known bands and recommended reading.

This is a brand new and highly recommended publication from Potenza Music, USA.

n.b. BASS CLEF ONLY

Thus our „body awareness" is in our ear: distribution of tension in the body, cramping or relaxation, muscle tone, posture, motor function and fine motor skills are all verified by the ear as regulating organ. One speaks of a cybernetic regulating cycle: mind (command) - muscle (execution) - ear (verification) - mind (correction of the order)

Alfred A. Tomatis from „The Conscious Ear"

The most important sensory organ for you as a musician is your ear. The goal of this book is to put listening to yourself more at the center of your practicing.
Through the routine of „daily exercises" we run the danger of limiting our concentration to mechanical procedures. Learning happens mostly through our senses: seeing, feeling, and hearing. The complex physical processes of playing a musical instrument can, however, only function when the analytical, logical thought of the left brain is in balance with the emotional, pictorial thought of the right brain. It is exactly this balance which is guided by our
capacity for musical imagination.
Every note we play is an expression of our individual personality and has a life of its own. This is the reason for the fascination that the trumpet exudes. We should give the same musical attentiveness to so-called „warm-up exercises" that we give to the study of etudes and concertos. (After all, the E-flat Major concerto of Joseph Haydn begins with a simple scale figure).
The two-part nature of the present exercises „programs" our concentration to focus our thinking on the essential. The fundamental idea is always simplification, given by the 2nd Part or the preliminary exercises, and by the blending of the two parts, into which we are „submerged".
Embark, therefore, on a new way of thinking in sound, according to the motto Dale Clevenger, solo hornist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, so aptly formulated:

„Your two best friends are your ear and your air!"
