The key figure in the Flemish National School (1850-1870) was Peter Benoit (1834-1901). The Antwerp city government interested him with the leadership of its music school which he thoroughly reorganised and developed into the Royal Flemish Conservatory. This three movement Sonata, was originally written for trombone in February 1863.
