Variations - Andrew Lloyd Webber Arr Eric Wilson - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Here is a fantastic new addition to the lighter repertoire for the euphonium, here with piano accompaniment.
From the arranger Eric Wilson:
VariationsViolin virtuoso Nicolai Paganini's Caprice in A minor (the fifth of his 24 Caprices for Solo Violin) has been the inspiration for countless sets of variations: the sequential passages, distinctive contours and intervals, and its inherent harmony all provide a rich source of material to work with.In 1977 Andrew Lloyd Webber added his name to those who have made use of Paganini's piece to fulfil his obligations on losing a bet on a Leyton Orient football match to his famous cello-playing brother, Julian. One of his variations (number four) became well known through its use as the theme to London Weekend Television's arts programme The South Bank Show - in its original context just a short snatch from a piece lasting some 45 minutes.Just out of university, in the late 1980s, I arranged a selection from the work and asked a prominent euphonium soloist to take a look at it for me (always advisable for aspiring composers and arrangers). It was deemed a great idea but the manuscript was lost - this was long before computer engraving and I had neglected to make a copy - so the idea languished for several years until | revisited it, trying hard to recall what I had done the first time! I was happy with the structure of what had become a nicely balanced ten minute selection but felt it needed some key changes to achieve a more satisfying harmonic journey.After far too long a hiatus, I have finally arrived at my final version. Paganini's theme is presented, followed by variations 1-5, 10, and 23 (in the original numbering). The famous South Bank Show theme is included, as is the variation which became Unexpected Song' in Tell Me On A Sunday, and the galloping finale - a showy ending for today's virtuosi!
Eric Wilson
Audiences will love this and it's 'legit' enough to also perform in recitals! While some of it is quite easy to play there are some sections that are quite challenging and the speed of the finale is rapid. In my opinion one or two of the high notes for some players could be transported down an octave without detriment to the overall effect. It has the same construction as the version that exists with euphonium and brass band, but in this version the euphonium plays more and rest less!
Please enjoy! Congratulations to Eric Wilson and Winwood Music for this new publication

Classical Euphonium-Gilles Rocha - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
A really interesting and fun solo from Swiss Euphonium player and composer Gilles Rocha. As the title suggests it's in a classical style but one which is sure to please, and ideal for recitals or solo competitions. An attractive mixture of running technique, freer, more expressive sections with cadenza elements and a Vivace final section.

#thegoldengatebridge - Damien Lagger - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Here is another fine solo composition from Switzerland, by Damien Lagger, and this is a real virtuoso showpiece written with the Swiss solo competitions in mind. It is a very popular genre now which test players to the limit but also is extremely impressive for a recital or solo competition.
A great combination of melodic and expressive music, cadenzas and highly virtuosic fast music that has a special emphasis on rhythmic figurations that will test every player. Worth the challenge!

Springtime - Reginald Heath - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Springtime by Reginald Heath has was to be one of the most famous and oldest original pieces for Euphonium within the UK Brass Band world.
This piece was old, even when Steven Mead picked it up at the age of 12 in the local music library!
It's a beautiful melody, some sparkling technique, easy on the ear, and has great charming character. It has some sections of quick triple tonguing which could prove a good test for many.
Here's a recording by Peter Wise for whom the piece was written and performed by, with the Blues and Royals military band.

Four Euphoniums For You - Yasuhide Ito - Euphonium Quartet and Harp (or Piano) |
||
|
There are not many works in existence for four euphoniums and harp, but this one is undoubtedly as far as we are aware, the best! The harp part can also with piano.
Yasuhide Ito is a well known Japanese composer who understands the Euphonium well and has written several works for it. In this attractive and engaging composition there are some sounds and textures that are really quite unique and this piece, if you can get four players and a good harpist together, is a sure winner.

Fireworks - John Frith - Tuba Euphonium Quartet (BTQ Series) |

Fireworks was commissioned by The British Tuba Quartet in 1995.
The challenge was to write an exciting piece for a quartet of tubas - a new combinations of instruments for me - consisting of two Euphoniums (tenor tubas) an Eb Tuba and a Bb Tuba. Fireworks begins and ends with fire-crackers from a live recording of a bonfire night gathering complete with rocket sounds in the foreground (on my request)the instruments imitate these 'explosive' sounds and this fine recording was the result. The music is published by Studio Music.

Most noticeable will be the extra clarity of sound, and sonorities that were thought to be difficult to obtain on traditional baritone mouthpieces. Both mouthpieces, the 4 and 6 add extra facility in extremes of range, both high and low. Articulation is easier to achieve, and because of improved airflow smoothness, intervals and dynamic extremes are also much improved.

This page is for the HEROS BARITONE 4 in GOLD PLATED - Following the extraordinary success of the Euphonium models in this range, we feel very sure that the new BARITONE mouthpieces are going to be very well received. Test reports are superb.
These new Heros baritone mouthpieces will provide baritone brass musicians with an extraordinary step forward in sound, projection, articulation and control.

Steven Mead is very happy to recommend and promote the SB new valve tray/gutter/water catchers for euphoniums ands baritone and tubas. This is the only one we sell now, but it is available with short legs and long legs, this is the NEW (June 2025) updated version with long legs so please check the other image on this page to see if your valve bottom caps correspond with this photo.,
Here is the NEWEST additon to the series (JUNE2025), the spring adjustable water catcher for euphoniums that is designed to fit all euphoniums!
NEWFEATURES:
* Wider sides
* less accidental spillage
* redesigned end posts
* stronger
* smooth shape and easier to grip
Steven had been looking for something like this for many years, and unhappy with the metal water catches the clip to the bottom of the valve group. The problem is traditionally have been extraneous vibration on certain frequencies, slight change of performance as well as the air compression sound that often accompanies the use of the metal gutters.
Steve has been testing this latest model for three months and it is really the best yet.
This updated SB Tray is extraordinary light (10g) and nonmetallic, and it has small hooks on the end of the two protruding prongs that clip inside the bottom caps of valves one and three, giving a very secure and reliable grip. This model has the extendable hooks to allow for the different dimensions of the different brands of euphoniums.
Guaranteed not to vibrate!

Hear My Prayer - Mendelssohn - Arr D.Childs - Euphonium and Piano (or Organ) |
||
|
The lyrical simplicity of its melodic line, combined with the plea of the title makes this one of the most intimate of Mendelssohn's works. Originally composed for soprano voice, chorus and organ, the music is always a dialogue between the individual and the Creator. In its original form Hear My Prayer is approximately twelve minutes in duration, but using material from the early and latter parts of the work David Childs has arranged this shorter version for solo euphonium.

Force of Nature – Concerto for Euphonium - Peter Graham - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Concerto for Euphonium
In his writings, Ernest Hemingway defined the American hero for a generation.
He created a new type of fictional character - a “man’s man” - a hard drinking pugilist who enjoyed bullfights, big game hunting, deep-sea fishing and other “macho” pursuits. In many respects Hemingway was the living embodiment of his creation, though his somewhat idealised life ended in suicide on July 2nd 1961 and the chapter on this Force of Nature came to a close. The concerto reflects upon moments in this extraordinary life.
- Matador – the traditions of the Spanish bullfight fascinated Hemingway. He wrote frequently on the subject, going beyond the superficial and exploring at a deeper level the nature of fear and courage. This flamenco-inspired music equally contrasts moments of uncertainty and resolve.
- Wayfarer (Reflections on Poor Wayfaring Stranger) – the tensions of Hemingway's early life in the midwest suburb of Oak Park (a town he reputedly described as “narrow-minded”) fuelled his wanderlust. At the age of 18 he arrived at the Italian Front, serving as an ambulance driver. Within days he was seriously wounded and the horrors of war put paid to adolescent illusions of immortality.
- Pilar - Hemingway's beloved boat Pilar could cut through the waves off the coast of Cuba at sixteen knots full-out. The music conjures up the thrill of the chase as the great fish hoves into view.

Dragonfly - Thierry Deleruyelle - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Dragonfly by Thierry Deleruyelle is a new work for euphonium, commissioned for and first performed by the French euphonium star Bastien Baumet.
Here 's a video of Bastien performing this work
Dragonfly was commissioned by Bastien Baumet, an international French soloist, as a new departure in euphonium repertoire. The concerto can be accompanied by wind band or brass band, as well as with piano accompaniment.
Written in three uninterrupted parts, a slow and warm theme separates two dynamic, swift, and agile sections. Like a dragonfly, the music flies sometimes with jolts, sometimes with serenity, allowing us to discover landscapes, colours, and changing horizons. Dragonfly showcases the soloist's inspired melodic curves, beautiful tone, and virtuosity.

Serenata - Jan Van der Roost - Euphonium and Piano - NEW |
||
|
A stunning new work from the well known and highly respected compser Jan Van der Roost. This is a fantastic new solo for the advance player.
Despite the title, this is a major work, at around 12 minutes, and is at times very demanding in the high range, for stamina and with it's technical demands. That said it should become an important work at the 'sharp' end of our euhpnoum repertoire!
It has gorgeous soaring melodies that show off the magnificent possibilities of Euphonium. An advanced player will revel in these melodies and in the technical demands that follow later in the work. This is the version with piano accompaniment but a full band set is also available, and will be on this site very soon.
Introduction in the published work
While composing Serenata, Jan Van der Roost didn't focus too much on virtuality, acrobatics or spectacle. Instead, he wanted to let the solo instrument shine as a melodic and expressive voice. And indeed: the warm sound of the ruphonium touches the heart of the audience straight away in the first section with a melodious theme. Then follows a rigadoon, a noble and elegant dance from the Renaissance era. Despite the fact that some of the variations on the main theme requires some technique and agility, the overall character mostly remains full. The composition as a whole builds further on these two musical ingredients, but thanks to a clever alternation of melodic and technical passages, it offers a nice stylistic diversity to the listeners. The piano is definitely not just accompanying but fully participates and begins a dialogue with the soloist: both musical partners have their say. The end is most spectacular and sonorous giving an extra boost of energy to the soloist as well as the piano in a grand finale.
Please note there are separate parts included with the piano score for euphonium in treble clef B-flat, bass clef in C and also bass clef in B-flat
You can listen to this YouTube video of the complete performance of this work where you can follow the wind orchestral score and solo part.

The Hispanic Euphonium for Solo Euphonium - Eduardo Nogueroles |
||
|
From the composer Eduardo Nogueroles:
The Hispanic Euphonium is a work for solo Euphonium dedicated to my talented and great friend Eduardo Diz.
The music was composed for the Spanish Association of Tubas and Euphoniums (AETYB) 2018 Competition and premiered at the Royal Conservatory of Music of Madrid.
Containing avant-garde techniques such as slaps, double voices, and glissandos, The Hispanic Euphonium is Spanish in character and poses formidable technical and musical challenges for the instrumentalist.
The music begins with a beautiful melody offering the soloist the opportunity to display deep expression and lyricism. A second section is a furious and energetic Allegro full of chromatism that leads to a virtuosic Cadenza.
The central part of the piece is a delicate Waltz in the form of theme and variations. The melody is simple and gentle, and its transformation into each of the two variations requires virtuosity on the part of the interpreter.
After a Scherzando in binary form that builds tension, we ultimately arrive at the final Andalusian dance that includes flamenco winks, with kicks in the style of the dancers and hand pops that remind us of conventional flamenco guitar strokes.

Pavanne pour une infante defunte - Ravel Arr V.Lisjak - for Solo Euphonium and Brass Choir |
||
|
The arranger writes: The idea of arranging this piece for large brass ensemble was a result of my intention to present Steven Mead’s lyrical qualities and the huge potential of his rich and colorful sound to a Croatian audience when he was a guest soloist in Zagreb. While we spoke about the program for the concert, I mentioned Ravel’s Pavane as a nice addition to my Concerto and the other Pavane (one by Faure, for solo euphonium and harp), and Steven supported the idea instantly, as it turned out that this piece was his favorite in his early euphonium soloist days. As he soon became a world famous virtuoso, where listeners constantly asked for higher and faster bravuras, I gladly used my chance to present the forgotten poetic and warm side of the euphonium. I avoided the fashionable stereotypes of many of today’s composers–making an artist break his fingers or lips by choosing extra fast pieces originally for violin or flute and arranging it for tuba.
The inspiring challenge was to create the atmosphere present in Ravel’s own orchestration of this piece, where no instrument plays a typical solo role. It wasn’t easy to achieve so many colors without strings and woodwinds. Yet, here we have the euphonium as a lead voice while it is also well incorporated into vertical blocks with french horns, trombones, and trumpets. Full symphony sized brass sections fuction here mainly to provide harmonic body, with the great percussive and melodic help of marimba and vibraphone. The result is an arrangement that is demanding in a sense of creating the right flow (not too slow – as Ravel hated it this way). Pavane is, after all, a dance.
A recording of this arrangment can be found on Bocchino’s CD release “Croatian Euphonic Brass,” together with a recording of another publication by Potenza, an arrangement of the Pavane by G. Faure, presented on this CD in the best possible way–by Steven Mead, who inspired me to try to give these masterpieces new shape.
–Vanja Lisjak
Steve writes, "its one of the most beautiful pieces I'ver ever recorded".
Solo parts included: Euphonium TC and BC, Trumpet in C 1, Trumpet in C 2, Trumpet in C 3, Horn in F 1, Horn in F 2, Horn in F 3, Horn in F 4, Trombone 1, Trombone 2, Bass Trombone, Tuba, Vibraphone, Marimba

Pulse - Thomas Doss - Euphonium and Wind Orchestra/Harmonie/Concert Band |
||
|
Just arrived at the store is this fantastic new solo by the Austrian composer, Thomas Doss.
The composer writes: Pulse, a solo work which was originally written for euphonium (or baritone) and wind orchestra. As the title suggests this piece is very rhythmic nature, Pulse represents a life and vitality, which also characterises the work. The tempo remains virtually constant throughout the piece. Even during the cadenza, played by euphonium, the pulse continues to beat steadily.
This work is dedicated to the young baritone soloist Felix Geroldinger from Upper Austria.
You can watch Felix performing it here with the SBO Wind Orchestra from Upper Austria https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Se-TjZVOEew, and it can also be heard on the CD of the same name, Pulse, played by Steven Mead and the Belgium Air Force band

Adagio Op.85 (from the Cello Concerto) - Edward Elgar Arr. Eric Wilson - euphonium and piano |
||
|
Here is one of the famous slow movements form the world of music, the slow movement, from the Elgar Cello Concerto, arranged for the first time for euphonium and piano.
"Elgar completed his last major work, the Cello Concerto Op. 85, in 1990 in Brinkwells, the thatched cottage in Sussex overlooking the South Downs he was renting at the time. Composed in the aftermath of the great war, it has to be said that this is music for a lost world. In this, the third movement, time certainly seems to almost standstill. It is imbued with elegant melancholy, perhaps also pain, and ultimately resignation.
In transcribing the piece for euphonium, (a perfect fifth lower than the original key) there have been various active displacements in both solo part and the piano accompaniment. As Elgar did in his orchestration, I have tried to create a texture where the soloist is not overpowered by the accompani but soloist and accompanies should work closely together. Bear in mind that accents and dynamics are relative and should never be overdone. Elgar frequently uses tiny nuances in dynamics, crescendos and so on, so I'd urge performance to listen closely to some of the worlds greatest cists.
Erik Wilson
This is undoubtedly going to be a very popular work for euphonium and because of the pitch range the arranger uses, should be within the reach of most players.

|
About Concerto for Tuba/Euphonium Quartet
This may be Mike Forbes's most expansive and challenging work for the tuba / euphonium quartet. Like Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra," this composition has no accompaniment and is a tour de force for the quartet.
Drawing on extended techniques (slide removal, multiphonics), Michael Forbes creates a dramatic and colorful work that particularly highlights the virtuosity of each musician.
Michael Forbes (born 1973 in Morgantown, West Virginia, USA), studied first with Mark Lusk and Marty Erickson (Bachelor’s Degree at Penn State University), then with tubist and composer, John Stevens (Master degree from the University of Wisconsin) and finally with world renowned tubist, Toby Hanks (Doctor’s Degree from the University of Maryland). Along the way, he also studyied with Stuart Roebuck, Brian Kingsley and Andrew Duncan (University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music, United Kingdom). He began his career as tuba player, soloist, conductor and arranger with the U.S. Army Band, «Pershing’s Own» in Washington, D.C.
Best known for his fine compositions and arrangements, Michael Forbes has received numerous commissions from a variety of well-known artists and chamber ensembles. Many of his works have been recorded and are also regularly selected in concert programs or as test pieces for international competitions.
As a soloist and as part of the internationally recognized «Sotto Voce Tuba Quartet», Michael Forbes is regularly invited to give performances and clinics at universities and conferences around the globe. He currently teaches at Illinois State University.

Homework - Roland Szentpali - for Four Bass Tubas |
||
|
About Homework
When I was in school I hated homework… Very often I just did not do it, got bad grades and my parents were unhappy.
Biology-Cells: the musical material starts with a structure like a DNA cell and makes different mutations.
Chemistry: every note is a name of a chemical such as H (hydrogen) Ca (calcium), Fe (iron), Ga (gallium), Ge(germanium), Ag (silver), Cd (cadmium), Ba (barium), Hf (hafnium), Hg (mercury), Db (dubnium)
Physics: a dynamic is an amount of energy. Changing this energy helps composers dramatize their music. This is an exercise in going far with dynamics, staying perfectly in tune and keeping in balance.
Mathematics: Prime numbers (2,3,5,7,11, etc) are the numbers which can only be divided with 1 or with itself. I played around with all the possibilities of making these dry structures become music.
Homework done! With love for my parents!
Roland Szentpali, April 2012, Hong Kong
Roland Szentpali was born in 1977 in Nyíregyháza, Hungary. He began his musical studies in his hometown; in 1991 he was admitted to the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest, as the tuba student of József Bazsinka and later of Gábor Adamik. At the age of 16 he won the national “Brasses and Percussion” competition, then wrote and performed his first concerto for tuba and symphony orchestra, recorded and broadcast by Hungarian state television. From here, his career as tubist and composer rapidly gained an international dimension. He entered the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy in Budapest where he studied with László Szabó, while taking private lessons with Roger Bobo. Since 1998 he has won first prizes at seven international competitions: Gdansk, Poland; Munich, Germany; Budapest, Hungary; Chéju, Republic of Korea; Brno, Czech Republic; Lieksa, Finland and second prize at the competitions of Guebwiller, France and Markneukirchen, Germany. His opus includes chamber music works, orchestral pieces and concerti for various wind instruments, most of it is published by Editions Bim

Deus Ex Machina - Michael Forbes - Bass Tuba Quartet |

The main character is trapped. There’s no way out. It is surely doomed. The movie is over. Then all of a sudden, an inconceivable solution appears from out of the blue. This is what is referred to as a deus ex machina and it is one of the most frowned upon tropes in filmmaking. Coined during Ancient Greek theatre, deus ex machina ...

Concerto in D Minor BWV 596 - Vivaldi/Bach arr. Michael Forbes - Tuba Euphonium Quartet |
||
|
The Concerto in D minor, BWV 596, is a notable work in the repertoire of Johann Sebastian Bach. It is a transcription of Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for Strings in G minor, RV 156. Bach, known for his exceptional skills in adaptation and arrangement, took Vivaldi’s original composition and transformed it into a concerto for organ.
The transcription process was a common practice during the Baroque era, where composers frequently adapted and rearranged works by their contemporaries or predecessors. In the case of BWV 596, Bach not only transcribed the original work but added his own artistic touches.
In this publication, Michael Forbes takes Bach’s organ transcription and adapts it to the euphonium/tuba quartet. Brass ensembles have the advantage of being able to easily imitate the sound of the organ in its various registers.

Les Barricades Mistérieuse - F.Couperin Trans. Michael Forbes for Bass Tuba Quartet |
||
|
"Les Barricades Mistérieuses" is part of François Couperin's Second Livre de Pièces de Clavecin (1717). This musical gem attests to Couperin's mastery of the elegance and sophistication of the French Baroque. The piece captivates with its mysterious charm and timeless beauty.
François Couperin le Grand (1668–1733), a prominent French Baroque composer and harpsichordist, hailed from a distinguished musical lineage. Trained by his father and uncle, both accomplished musicians, he showcased his virtuosity early on. Couperin served as the organist at the Church of Saint-Gervais in Paris from 1693 until his death.
As a composer, his lasting contributions include the 1716 collection "L'Art de toucher le clavecin" (The Art of Playing the Harpsichord). This work, a testament to his mastery, offers insights into Baroque performance. His compositions, known for their expressive ornamentation and evocative titles, exemplify his sensitivity to emotion.
François Couperin's impact transcended his era, and his works continued to influence musicians for centuries. Revered for their elegance and sophistication, his compositions contribute significantly to the rich tapestry of Baroque music. Couperin le Grand's legacy endures as a key figure in the history of classical music.

Chaconne - Bach/Busoni for Tuba Euphonium Quartet |
||
|
About Chaconne
Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924), an Italian composer and pianist, made significant contributions through his creative transcriptions of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works. His fascination with Bach’s music led him to reimagine compositions with virtuosity, adding unique touches to bring the timeless beauty of the Baroque era to a broader audience.
One of Busoni’s most renowned transcriptions is the “Chaconne” from Bach’s Violin Partita No. 2. This monumental work for piano captures Bach’s essence while infusing Busoni’s expressive interpretations. The transcription showcases Busoni’s virtuosic technique, expanding the tonal possibilities of the piano.
Beyond the “Chaconne,” Busoni transcribed organ works, chorale preludes, and keyboard suites, often adding ornamentations and harmonic explorations in the late-Romantic style. His approach reflected a belief in tradition and the evolution of musical styles, preserving and revitalizing the past.

SBTray - Water catcher/Valve Gutter for Besson Prestige Baritones - Black - non extendable- NEW! |
||
|
NEW DESIGN for Besson Prestige 2056
After more than 18 months of testing Steven Mead is very happy to recommend and promote this new valve tray/gutter/water catcher for euphoniums and now here for the first time, for Besson Baritones.
He has been looking for something like this for many years, and unhappy with the metal water catches the clip to the bottom of the valve group. The problem is traditionally have been extraneous vibration on certain frequencies, slight change of performance as well as the air compression sound that often accompanies the use of the metal gutters.
This new SB Tray is extraordinary light (10g) and nonmetallic, and it has small hooks on the end of the two protruding prongs that clip inside the bottom caps of valves one and three, giving a very secure and reliable grip.
It's very easy to remove and put back on for emptying the water, and there's also a very small groove at one end which allows the instrument to be tipped to one side to allow water to escape, if preferred.
Guaranteed not to vibrate!
Please watch this video where Steven explains all aspects of this new accessory.
As this is a brand-new accessory, it hasn't been tested on every brand and model of baritone yet but we are confident that it will be compatible with the following brands:

Scaramouche - Philip Sparke - Wind band/Harmonie/Concert Band accompaniment |
||
|
Scaramouche - Baritone or Euphonium Solo (with Wind band/Harmonie/Concert Band accompaniment
From the composer Philip Sparke - "Scaramouche was commissioned by Katrina Marzella with a grant from the BBC Performing Arts Fund. Undoubtedly the finest baritone player of her generation, Katrina was granted an education bursary from the BBC Performing Arts Fund as a result of winning the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist of the Year in 2004. This has allowed her to commission a series of new works for her instrument, including Scaramouche. In this version for euphonium and concert band, Scaramouche continues Sparke’s series of works which uses the Italian improvisational theatre tradition of commedia dell’arte as an inspiration. Pantomime, Harlequin and, now, Scaramouche draw on the contrasting moods of pathos and comedy characterised by the ‘happy/sad’ masks which symbolise European theatre. A slow expressive ballad, followed by a spirited vivace allows the composer to exploit both the lyrical and technical sides of the euphonium, therefore giving the soloist the chance to display the full capabilities of their instrument."
A really super solo, sure to be widely played!

Alarum - Edward Gregson - for unaccompanied tuba |
||
|
Alarum for solo tuba was written, especially for James Gourlay, and was first performed by him at the Adrian Boult HJall, Birmingham on February 13,, 1994.
The title of the work derives from an old English word, meaning a 'call to arms', and I have taken this to be a primitive (that is primeval) call, and hence the opening gesture of the piece, which is meant to imitate a tribal like intensity. The opening four note set of pitches is taken from the name of the dedicatee.
The piece is divided into three main sections and runs continuously. The first section is by turns, aggressive, nervous and lyrical. The second section is melodic and peaceful, but reaches a climax when the two themes, lyrical and rhythmic, are juxtaposed against each other. The last section is dance-like in character with changing time patterns which lead back to the very opening statement of the piece.

A Portrait of Paris - Peter Graham - Duet (cornet/euph or two euphs) with piano accompaniment |

A Portrait of Paris was written for Alexis Demailly and Bastien Baumet of the Paris Brass Band.
The three movements, Promenade (aux Champs-Élysées), Sur La Seine and Tour de France, are the composer's musical impressions of some of the city's landmarks and events (with occasional references to a famous Parisian composer thrown in for good measure...)
A fantastic extended work.

About the Author
Anthony O'Toole , born 1988 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, holds a bachelor's degree in Music Theory & Composition from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he studied composition with Daniel Perlongo, Jack Stamp and David Martynuik. He is currently a master's student in Composition at George Mason University where he studies with Mark Camphouse. Anthony O'Toole's music is unique and fresh with its intense rhythmic energy, lush jazz-influenced harmonic language, and his talent for highly effective and colorful orchestration. Mr. O'Toole has written more than 100 works for almost every medium and began writing music in his early teens. In high school his interest in composition stemmed from his studies as a percussionist and love of performing. He also became a competent multi-instrumentalist learning piano, viola, saxophone, clarinet, trombone and tuba. Although he is largely self-taught as a composer he credits many of his teachers for being mentors and advocates of his music. While at IUP he had the pleasure of receiving lessons and attending lectures from guest composers such as Cindy McTee, Samuel Hazo, Christopher Marshall, Frank Ticheli, Clark MacAllister, Richard Danielpour, Bruce Yurko and Drew Hemenger. Arcades and Alleys (Sonata for Euphonium) - Alan Lourens - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
The Sonata for Euphonium is a traditional three movement sonata following classical forms. Movement one is lively Sonata Form, Movement Two is a quiet Ternary Form, and a very lively Rondo rounds out the composition.
This is is post-modern; it is Each movement opens strong in the stated key (G Major, f minor) though in each case the tonality wanders considerably before finishing in the home key. The work is descriptive in nature, but not programmatic.
Arcades and Alleyways explores the whole range of the instrument, from a Pedal B Flat to a C three octaves above that note, and requires professional level technical ability.
Is a really interesting work, essentially a Sonata for Euphonium.
Lourens was born in Perth, Western Australia, and attended Scarborough Senior High School, where he won the prize for music in his graduating year. After completing a degree in Music Education at the Western Australian College of Advanced Education, Lourens taught brass and classroom music in public schools, based at Kelmscott Senior High School, and including conducting and teaching brass at Churchlands Senior High School and Perth Modern School. He returned to study at Indiana University, earning a master's degree in music (in Euphonium Performance) in 1992, and a Doctorate (in Wind Conducting) in 1999, working as an Associate Instructor to Harvey Phillips and in the IU department of bands, working with the Marching Hundred. At Indiana, he studied Euphonium with M.Dee Stewart and Daniel Perantoni. He was also awarded a Performers Certificate for the quality of his Masters recital.
From 2000, Lourens has held leadership positions at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (as Head of Classical Music), and has held positions in Singapore(at Lasalle College of the Arts),[1] and in Dubai.[2] His name was also associated with a possible appointment as Head of the ANU School of Music.[3][4] In 2009, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).

Kaleidoscopic Overdrive - Ben McMillan - euphonium and brass quintet |

A very exciting work for euphonium and brass quintet . composed for Steven Mead and Spanish Brass; The title comes from the constantly-shifting meter and somewhat hectic feel, the melody bouncing back and forth between soloist and quintet, and the shifts between somewhat unconnected sections.
The composer Ben McMillan writes: The main melody was something that had been in my head for a while, one of the many musical seeds that I constantly find myself humming or whistling absentmindedly. This became the first piece I ever had published, and the second ever recorded.

Composer: Schubert, Franz Arranger: Werden, David
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
https://youtu.be/AQgnN0_YOD0
Originally written for an instrument called the Arpeggione (like a fretted cello), Schubert's beautiful Sonata works very well for wind instruments. This arrangement is written by the performer, David Werden, for euphonium and piano. The performance is from a live recital tour of Japan in 1989. A graduate of The University of Iowa, Mr. Werden was the euphonium soloist with The United States Coast Guard Band for more than 20 years. He has performed throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, England, Japan, and the former Soviet Union. Through FM and TV broadcasts, his solos have been heard in dozens of countries around the world. He is a recitalist and clinician, and has performed at local, national, and international symposiums. He was a member of The USCG Band Euphonium/Tuba Quartet, the Atlantic Tuba Quartet, and the Classic Brass Band. He previously taught at the University of Connecticut and is listed in Marquis' Who's Who in American Education. His efforts to expand the role and recognition of the euphonium led the British magazine Sounding Brass in conjunction with the American publication Euphonia to name him "Euphonium Player of the Year" in 1980. He is the first American awarded this honor. In 1981 he was elected to the post of Euphonium Coordinator for the International Tuba-Euphonium Association (formerly called Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association: T.U.B.A). In 1987 he was appointed to the Honory Board of Advisors of ITEA. His many solo performances and his efforts to expand the role of the euphonium in music earned him the prestigious Coast Guard Commendation Medal. He has also been awarded two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, the Coast Guard Special Operations ribbon, two Coast Guard Unit Commendations, and three Coast Guard Merit Somnataorious Unit Commendations. In 1993 he was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda honors society. He has published articles in Euphonia magazine, The Instrumentalist magazine and the T.U.B.A. Journal. He is the author of The Blaikley Compensating System, Scoring for Euphonium, co-author with Denis Winter of the Euphonium Music Guide, and a co-author of the Brass Player's Cookbook. He compiled and edited a series of papers by Arthur Lehman into the book The Brass Musician. He has also published over four dozen arrangements for a variety of solo instruments and ensembles. His website, http://www.dwerden.com/, has become a favorite of euphonium players everywhere. Since moving to Minnesota he has performed with Symphonia (America's Premier Large Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble), the Minnesota Orchestra, the Sheldon Theater Brass Band, was a special guest artist at the International Euphonium Institute, and has been heard on live national broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion.

Euphonium Concerto - Edward Gregson - Euphonium and Brass Band |
||
|
Here is the Euphonium Concerto by Edward Gregson, just published with brass band accompaniment.
This is certain to be a highly sought-after concerto and one that advanced players will want to study and perform in the future.
Program notes by the composer:
The Euphonium Concerto was commissioned by the Euphonium Foundation UK and was written for, and dedicated to, David Childs. Lasting some 22 minutes, it is a large-scale symphonic work in both its structure and scale. Its three movements, subtitled Dialogues, Song without Words, and A Celtic Bacchanal, explore the full range of the technical, musical, and emotional scope of the euphonium.
The first movement, Dialogues, is concerned with contrast and development, using as a reference point a five note musical cypher (BACH – B flat, A, C, B natural – followed by a tritone F). This cypher is used in various guises throughout the movement and beyond and acts as a ‘pillar’ in an ever-changing musical canvass. The movement’s sonata form structure contrasts highly charged rhythmic ideas with a lyrical second section, where perhaps the euphonium takes on the cloak of a cello with its soaring melodicism. This leads to a central section, with scurrying semiquavers culminating in a frenetic fugal climax before returning to the opening ideas, now further explored and developed.
An extended cadenza, with brief but dramatic interruptions from the timpanist, leads directly into the slow movement – Song without Words. Here, the peaceful mood of the opening tutti section leads to a wistful ballad for the soloist, which pays nostalgic homage to another era long since gone. The opening music returns, this time developing into an intense climax, before quietly sinking into a reprise of the opening music, with the soloist’s ballad now transferred from minor to major. The movement ends quietly and leads without a break into the final movement.
A Celtic Bacchanal is, as the title suggests, a wild dance that takes on some of the character of Celtic folk music (the dedicatee is a Celt, and the composer half-Celt!). Whilst primarily being a technical tour-de-force, a lyrical central section once again exploits the euphonium’s singing qualities, reaching a majestic peroration before subsiding into tranquility. The folk-like dance starts up again, this time culminating, via a reference to the first movement, into an exuberant and life-affirming coda.
The work exists in FOUR versions, with symphony orchestra, wind orchestra, piano (available on this site)and here with brass band accompaniment

Be My Love - Brodsky and Cahn Arr. Ray Farr - Euphonium and Brass Band |

Be My Love was written for the film The Toast of New Orleans in 1950, and was nominated for an Academy Award in the same year. The story revolves around a rough-and-tumble fisherman from the Louisiana bayous, who is gifted with a wonderful, if unschooled voice. He is discovered by the director of the New Orleans French Opera (David Niven), and falls in love with the prima donna, a refined young soprano (Kathryn Grayson). The film has sunk into obscurity, but Be My Love survives as one of Mario Lanza's best known signature songs.
This version for euphonium and brass band was expertly crafted by Ray Farr in the late 80's for the Grimethorpe Colliery Band

Phil writes: These euphonium-specific studies were inspired by Hiram Diaz (that’s right-The President’s Own euphonium player!), who had me pull out all the stops to explore the amazing versatility of this instrument. You’ve never seen anything like this before! BC or TC Bb versions now avaliable!
I've always been fascinated by the Euphonium and their owners. They seem to be stuck between so many different worlds, both technically and musically. They can play gorgeous melodies as well as lightning, fast, technical passages, and often do, not only in the same piece, but sometimes in the same line of music for years, the great Robert King tried to get the Boston Symphony Orchestra to endow a Euphonium chair and make that voice take up permanent residence in the orchestra. Certainly, the orchestral works that exist in the repertoire by Strauss, Holst, and others that score for Euphonium (or tenor tuba) are richer for this addition. The fact that Mr King was not successful in his quest, speaks more to the orchestral worlds inflexibility than to the versatility of this fascinating instrument. Certainly the musical ensembles that regularly use this voice find it indispensable. In my many brass ensemble arrangements for the Washington Symphonic Brass, the euphonium part was one of the most fun to imagine.
In the pages of this book, I offer up a small addition to your ever increasing and expanding repertoire. My hope is that it will find a place on your music stand as a book. That's both fun to play and challenging. Here's to the next 200 years of Euphonium!"
Steve Mead writes: this book is highly recommended. It's very challenging as lots of euphonium-inspired classical influences can be detected, and it's all over the instrument! Fantastic to study and work up to a high level.

Funk Theory - Peter Meechan - Piano or electronic backing |
||
|
Originally composed for euphonium and trombone quartet, Funk Theory became an instant success following its première on 7th October 2003, featuring the all female Bones Apart trombone quartet and David Childs in Manchester's RNCM Concert Hall. Funk Theory is now available in this arrangement with piano and/or CD accompaniment.
The music is based on two simple chord sequences - the first is heard in the first 7 bars and the second is an 8 bar sequence heard throughout the piece. The melody continually varies and develops becoming increasingly busy and difficult. It could almost be considered a small set of 'funk' variations.
Funk Theory has been performed in its various forms by euphonium soloists throughout the world. It is great fun to play and creates a little 'light relief' during any concert. The original version of Funk Theory with trombone quartet accompaniment is also available from Prima Vista.

100 Days of Trumpet Practice - Rex Richardson - Practice Book (TC) |
||
|
100 Days of Trumpet Practice is a solid practice ritual. A true recipe book covering all aspects of trumpet (brass) playing. Rex Richardson establishes the structure of a disciplined routine. A concept that reveals the meticulous and efficient daily work of one of the great virtuosos. Ear training and mouthpiece buzzing, sound production, flexibility, articulation, fingers, range, improvisation, reading and transposition, repertoire, scales and arpeggios.
Renowned as a performer and composer of new, genre-busting music, Yamaha Performing Artist Rex Richardson has been called “One of the finest virtuosos of our time” (Brass Herald) “a standout soloist with the power, range and flexibility to rival Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw” (DownBeat), and “among the very best trumpet soloists in the world today” (Journal of the International Trumpet Guild).
A professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) since 2002, he has served as International Tutor in Trumpet at England’s Royal Northern College of Music and at Austria’s JAM Music Lab University.
Although conceived for the trumpet, we believe that this method has many many outstanding benefits for Euphonium and Baritone players also. Highly recommended.

World of Brass
Omaggio is the Italian word for homage or tribute, and as we consider the subject matter of the three solo concerti, this is undoubtedly the thread between them. In chronological order, Peter Graham’s In League with Extra-ordinary Gentleman is dedicated to three euphonium playing family members, with literary stars titled in each of the three movements. Philip Harper’s evocative and dramatic concerto is a tribute to the great grandfather of Micah Parsons, the young euphonium player who commissioned the work from the composer. Henry Nichols was killed in the First World War and the events surrounding this tragic event provide the subject matter for this concerto. Philip Sparke’s Euphonium Concerto No. 4 with subtitle Omaggio is written as a tribute to our soloist’s father, Rex Mead who passed away in January 2021. Rex was a kind, loving father and husband, who sporting prowess, good nature and true gentlemanly conduct inspired all those he came in contact with.
Three shorter contrasting works provide balance to these wonderful concerti. Lucy Pankhurst’s colourful work receives its premiere recording as does Luc Vertommen’s superb arrangement of Piazzolla’s masterful Cafe 1930. Ken Downie’s setting of The Sally Gardens provides a suitable benediction to the action, drama and high emotion of the main works of this album.
MDP Method (treble clef) - **NEW** |
||
|
This is an excellent new addition to the euphonium/baritone method book repertory.
76 pages of outstanding studies and daily drills, refreshingly original, from the pen of composer Daniel Hall.
From intermediate to advanced. High quality publication.
Micah Dominic Parsons writes:
Over the course of the past year, I have been working alongside Daniel Hall to create an accessible exercise book for amateur musicians. In our modern world, we are becoming increasingly busy with work, family and hobby commitments and finding the time to practice each day especially after a busy day can be difficult.
Over the past seven years, I have tested and adapted my own practice routine to fit around my own commitments which has developed my own personal interest in developing a method book which can aid in encouraging the individual to develop their own daily practice routine which fits around their daily commitments and also maintains and improves their current standard.
The MDP Method Book is an amalgamation of a number of personal practice routines which I have developed over the past seven years to fit around my daily routines.
The book contains a range of exercises which cover all the basic technical aspects of practice and is designed to be used for fifteen minutes over a six or seven day period.
The MDP Method is split into sections which can be tackled either as a whole in one practice session or individually working through the book working on one exercise within each section for a total period of thirty minutes. The book is designed to accommodate all musicians from those working at a beginner level to those working at a more advanced level.

Pulcinella - Philip Sparke - Euphonium and Piano |

PULCINELLA - Philip Sparke
Euphonium (or Baritone) and Piano Reduction
Watch/listen the youtube video: https://youtu.be/qJSVuaz7Vmc
which shows the full score too - Recorded by the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Air Force and its conductor Matty Cilissen. Soloist: Kevin Van Giel, Euphonium
Pulcinella was commissioned by the Taiwanese euphonium player Tzu-Hsiang Lin. Lin is a renowned soloist and teacher and a Besson Euphonium Artist. He teaches euphonium at Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, Shih Chien University and National Kaohsiung Normal University. Pulcinella continues Sparkes series of euphonium solos named after characters of the Italian commedia dellarte and opens with a long and expressive minor melody for the soloist over a brooding accompaniment. This is taken up briefly by the piano and is extended by the soloist after a change of key. A cadenza, accompanied by fragments of the main melody leads to a complete change of mood, tempo and tonality, introducing a Vivo section starting with a perky syncopated tune for the soloist. The piano then uses elements of this new tune to introduce a change of key, where the soloist introduces a more lyrical second subject over a pulsing accompaniment. The piano then takes this up and changes key to reintroduce the original Vivo melody, which leads to a short and acrobatic coda to bring the work to a spectacular close.

Denis Wick Baritone Practice Mute |
||
|
Most practice mutes are infamous for their deficiencies in pitch, intonation and excessive resistance. Through careful design, Wick has created a practice mute that stops nearly all sound while retaining a stable pitch, accurate intonation and the ideal level of resistance. Whether they are being used in teaching or practicing, Wick practice mutes can bring the sound to the edge of silence.
This is a terrific quiet metal mute that will satisfy the needs of many baritone players.

Reverie - Thomas Doss - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
The composer writes: "Reverie is a small piece of music for a euphonium player. A dear friend and colleague of mine commissioned the work, to whom Reverie is also dedicated. The work commences with a dream-like melody and then explores various emotions to showcase its virtuosic capabilities".
This is a very beautiful and extended work for euphonium, and this is the arrangement with piano accompaniment. It also exists with wind orchestra accompaniment. Please contact us at euphstore@gmail.com if you require the band set.
Steve recorded this in the band version on his recent CD entitled Pulse, and it's proved to be a very popular work.
This is suitable for recitals, concerts and festivals.
It is quite an extended work, and put some physical demands on the player, with quite a few high concert C's throughout. That said, it is a work that players should aspire to play. It's one of the most beautiful additions to our repertoire in recent years.

Sonata for Euphonium and Piano - David Gillingham |
||
|
Herer's the Sonata for Euphoniumm and Piano by the very popular US composer David Gillingham. He is a prolific composer for the euphonium and so many of his works have become an integral part of the modern euphonium repertoire.
Program Notes
The Sonata for Euphonium and Piano was written for and commissioned by Chris McGinty. The work is cast in the usual three-movement format with the outer movements structured in sonata form and the middle in simple song form (ABA). As the title suggests, the piano has an equal role to the euphonium and is hardly ever “accompanying” the euphonium.
The first movement features an aggressive primary theme characterized by octave leaps over fluctuating simple and compound meter. By contrast, the second theme group is comprised of graceful chord outlines and descending scale figures following modal harmony and chromatic mediant progressions in compound quadruple and quintuple meter. The development section utilizes the material from both theme groups moving through constantly shifting tonality. Solo piano brings back the primary theme in the recapitulation eventually joined by the euphonium. The second theme group finds the euphonium playing material related to the piano’s figuration in the exposition while the piano plays the melodic line, originally stated by the euphonium. A sprightly coda utilizing the primary thematic material ends the movement.
Like distant bells, the piano begins the second movement with a mixture of thirds and seconds in the warmth of D-flat major under which the euphonium plays a lovely arching melody. A transition leads to C major and the piano repeats the thematic material. A development ensues with the euphonium playing an ornamented version of the theme in compound duple meter with the piano moving in continuous 16ths. The passage modulates to D major and the euphonium plays an augmented version of the theme with the piano articulating the opening bell-like figure in diminution. The piano continues its figuration in an interlude which serves as a transition back to D-flat major and changes its pattern to pan-diatonic clusters that serve as a backdrop to a return of the theme in the euphonium. A coda shifts to F major, then A major, back to D-flat major, and then ends, longingly, on an F major seventh.
The final movement centers around the tonality of B-flat minor and begins tenaciously with a undulating pattern of 16ths in the piano in a very fast tempo. Against this, the euphonium plays an aggressive and foreboding theme following a mixture of the harmonic and melodic minor scale, ascending and descending. The foreboding mood changes drastically when the mode changes to B-flat major and the euphonium sings a celebratory theme derived from the primary theme. The piano enhances the celebration with quick octave leaps on three and four note diatonic clusters alluding to the ringing of bells. An extensive development section follows reworking both themes through transient modulations, sequences, diminution and augmentation, all of which fluctuate in mood from foreboding to celebratory. In the recapitulation, the euphonium begins with a dance-like version of the theme in 6/8 rhythm while the piano states the theme in augmentation. The two soon return to their roles as they were in the exposition. The second theme becomes even more celebratory with the piano playing the undulating pattern of the beginning of the movement in E-flat major and the euphonium augmenting the theme. There is a retransition to B-flat minor, but the rhythmic excitement continues through the coda to definitive closure.

Motions for Euphonium and String Quartet - David Gillingham |
||
|
There are not many works for Euphonium and string quartet of an original nature, so this major work, Motions is to be welcomed and for the ambitious euphonium player, can be an extremely useful and effective piece of music..
Program Notes
Motions was commissioned by the Tuba Bach Festival of Big Rapids, Michigan, Ed Mallett, director, for performance by the Harlem String Quartet with Ed Mallett on euphonium.
The work is in five movements, each alluding to a different “motion.” Movement 1, “perpetual,” uses a continuous pattern of 16th notes depicting perpetual motion. Movement 2, “slow,” makes obvious reference to very slow motion. The harmony provides much of the interest of this movement with suspended figures, added note chords, extended tertian sounds, and shifting tonality. “Contrary,” the motion of Movement 3, uses contrary motion throughout within the melodic vocabulary of a blues scale and traditional jazz-like harmonies and rhythms. Movement 4, “stationary” is based on a pedal “B” throughout the whole movement played by euphonium, cello and violin 1. As in Movement 2, the harmony provides interest and variance around the sustained “B.” “Oscillatory” motion is the subject of Movement 5. The movement is based on an oscillating minor third with driving rhythms and fluctuating dynamics.

Spitfire - Nathan Doughtrey for Euphonium or Tuba/Euphonium and Piano |
||

Spitfire is a tour-de-force duet for euphonium and piano that takes your breath away from the first flourish of 16th notes and doesn't let go until the final note. Caution: Not for the feint of heart. The set includes an optional tuba, which turns the duet into a trio.
Program Notes
Spitfire was inspired by the British fighter planes of the same name used by the Royal Air Force and several other countries during World War II. Designed as a short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft, the Supermarine Spitfire was one of the fastest planes in service during the war. The quick moto perpetuo nature of the composition was an attempt to capture the speed and excitement of this historic plane. The word spitfire is also used to describe a quick-tempered or highly excitable person, which is also appropriate.
Spitfire was written for Dr. Brian Meixner for performance at the Southeast and Northeast Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conferences (SERTEC & NERTEC). Dr. Meixner and the composer performed the world premiere of the work on March 15, 2013 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, FL as part of SERTEC. Arturo Sandoval - Brass Playing Concepts and 12 Original Studies (TC only) |
||
|
This is one of Steve's favourite books, since MANY years, and here now for the first time at the Euphoniumstore.
About Brass Playing Concepts
The Work
The art of the brass musician is measured by the extent, the intensity and the quality of his mastery as well as the influence of his personality. The phenomenal mastery of Arturo Sandoval has aroused the admiration, respect and even the incredulity of audiences, of his colleagues and of young students. Not a few imagine that there must be sorne kind of special trick involved here ...
The approach proposed here by Arturo Sandoval - as perhaps that of every artist who has made his way to success and can verbalize his experience - may appear simple. In fact, it is. As simple as is the solution to every problem, once it is found...
Arturo Sandoval was born November 6th,1949 in Artemis, province of Havanna, Cuba. At the age of fifteen he entered the Cuban National School of the Arts where he studied classical trumpet. In 1965 he met the great Russian trumpet player Timofey Dokshidser and was deeply impressed by his artistry. From 1974 to 1980 he played with the famous Cuban Irakere big band. Then he created his own band, started to travel to foreign countries, getting finally the international recognition he deserved. In 1990 he left Cuba for good and settled in the USA. He has since toured all over the world, recording many CDs and his fame is growing constantly. His phenomenal virtuoso trumpet playing and his great talent as a pianist and film music composer are admired worldwide by classical and jazz musicians.

10 baroque pieces.
We all know that the euphonium was not developed until well into the 19th century, so there is no authentic classical or baroque repertoire. This is especially frustrating when you consider the agility and expressiveness of the instrument in the hands of our best players. We can be sure that the composers of the baroque era would have leapt at the chance of writing for the euphonium, and this volume of pieces attempts to show what might have resulted, had it been around.

30 Etudes Melodiques - Emile Joseph Trognee (TC only) |
||
|
Emile Joseph Trognée was born on 4th of July 1868 in Tirimon, Belgium. He studied trumpet at the Brussels Conservatory. After winning a European competition in 1902, he became solo trumpet and cornet at the Mariinskiy Theatre (now called Kirov Theatre) in St. Petersburg. He spent the rest of his life in Russia, working at the Mariinskiy for 25 years, and he died in 1942 of hunger during the three year siege of Leningrad by German troops.
Trognée was an outstanding musician. A well-known Russian conductor, Karl Eliasberg, wrote: “Trognée had a unique feeling of ensemble; his sense of dynamics and musical phrasing was remarkable. His sound was never forced but always bright, powerful and even in all registers. He was also a great master of very soft legato playing and well-known for his performances of the “Ring”, “Rienzi” and “Lohengrin” as well as of the operas of Tchaikovsky and Verdi.”
Trognée was respected by both musicians and composers. He advised Rimsky-Korsakow to make some changes in the trumpet part of his opera the “The Legend of the invisible City of Kitezh” (the well known difficult trumpet passage in the symphonic poem of the “Battle at Kerzhenets”).
Trognée taught at the Baltic Fleet Music School from 1911-1917 and at the Rimsky-Korsakov Music School of St.Petersburg from 1928 to 1941. He wrote several works for trumpet and cornet. His “Fantasia-Caprice”, published in Moscow in 1946 in Tabakov’s “Elementary and progressive Trumpet Method” was especially popular for many years.
The “Studies for Trumpet”, published 1932 by Triton in St.Petersburg were also well known. 15 Grand Etudes - Emile Joseph Trognee (TC only) |
||
|
Emile Joseph Trognée (1868-1942)
These 15 final etudes have been dedicated to Mikhail Tabakov (1877-1956), the father of the modern Russian trumpet school. Serguej Bolotin, the Russian trumpet player, preserved them together with Trognée’s complete muscial work. These studies, as well as the works of Vassili Brandt or Oskar Böhme, have greatly contributed, to the history of the Russian trumpet school.

||
|
Here's a brand new arrangment from Misa Mead of the beautiful Sicilienne Op.78 by Gabriel Faure.
Watch Misa's performance of this piece on Youtube.
Sicilienne, Op. 78, is a short work by Gabriel Fauré, composed in 1893. It was originally an orchestral piece, written for a theatrical production that was abandoned. In 1898 Fauré arranged the unperformed music as a work for cello and piano, and in the same year incorporated it into his incidental music for Maurice Maeterlinck's play, Pelléas et Mélisande, in an orchestration for theatre orchestra. It took its final form as part of a suite arranged for full orchestra by Fauré, published in 1909.
The duet will work great for two equally talented euphonium or baritone (with 4v) players.
This is sure to be a popular concert or recital piece.

Euphonium Concerto - Edward Gregson - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Here is the Euphonium Concerto by Edward Gregson, just published with piano accompaniment.
The work exists in FOUR versions, with symphony orchestra, wind orchestra, brass band and here on this site , with piano accompaniment.

Kristy's song - Pete Meechan - Baritone or Euphonium and Piano |

Here is a beautiful lyrical solo suitable for euphonium or baritone, composed for the Australian baritone soloist Kristy Rowe.
The composer writes:
“I got to know Kristy when she moved over to the UK from Australia. I enjoyed getting to know her personally, and also enjoyed getting to know her beautiful playing, so was delighted when she asked if I would write something for this project. I had produced a CD for Leyland Band during Kristy’s time with Leyland, on which she performed John Golland’s ‘Peace’, and her lyrical playing, and her sound, blew me away. So I wanted to write something that reflected those qualities.” Peter Meechan – 2013

Ave Maria - Astor Piazzolla Arr. Luc Vertommen - Euphonium and Piano - now back in stock |
||
|
This is Piazzolla's beautiful and haunting Ave Maria. This is a brand-new release from Band Press, the company owned by the arranger of this work, Luc Vertommen. This was recently recorded on video by Steven Mead, and you can watch the video here.
PROGRAM NOTES
Ave Maria (Tanti anni prima – Many years ago) is one of two hauntingly beautiful tunes drawn from Ástor Piazzola’s score for the 1984 Marco Bellocchio film Enrico IV (Henry IV) based on the eponymous play by Luigi Pirandello with the same title, starring Marcello Mastroianni and Claudia Cardinale.
An unnamed Italian aristocrat falls off his horse while playing the role of Henry IV during carnevale festivities. After he comes to, he believes himself to be Henry. For the next twenty years, his family, maintain an elaborate charade in a remote Umbrian villa, staffed with servants hired to play the roles of Henry's privy councillors and simulate the eleventh-century court. During the play it appears that after 12 years of illness, he notices that he is cured, but decides to continue in his role.
The movie contains two of Piazzolla's most beautiful and haunting songs. Of the two songs, Oblivion, which is heard at the close of the movie, became one of Piazzolla’s best known songs and more frequently performed, but Tanti anni prima is no less beautiful. The theme is associated with the character Matilda, a widow whom Henry loved, unrequited, before the accident, portrayed by Claudia Cardinale in the movie.
The song is also known as Ave Maria, a later name most likely given it for commercial reasons by Piazzolla’s Italian agent, Aldo Pagani. One must agree that the new name fits, the Ave Maria does bring to mind a church organ during a meditative moment. Ave Maria consists of two parts, both with smooth, broad melodic lines to show of the composers lyrically sentimental side. In the second movement more passion and character is requiered especially to colour with the modern, more dissonant chords.
Although originally for oboe and piano, the version for cello and piano is among the more frequently performed. This version for euphonium and piano of Piazzolla’s Ave Maria is arranged by Luc Vertommen.
Highly recommended, sure to be very popular

Review from Thomas Dunne, Brass Band World, Oct.2019
In this new release Swiss euphonium player, Fabian Bloch, breaks new ground with an outstanding selection of no less than eight première recordings of new repertoire in a ‘jazz trio’ style.
He opens with François Killian’s Bogalusa. The cheeky syncopated rhythms, and nonchalant piano and drum kit accompaniment paint a delightfully nostalgic picture of the small Louisiana town famous for its jazz and blues. Composed by Bloch’s former euphonium colleague at Fairey Band, Jim Fieldhouse’s Vault reveals a sonorous tone in the expansive opening passages, followed by showcasing a considerable technical ability. Meanwhile, Blazing by Fabian Kunzli proves to be a fascinating, often mesmerising work, ranging from dance passages to mysterious moments of introversion.
Daniel Schnyder’s ATLAS concerto features as the major work of the disc. Inspired by the snowy mountain peaks of Marrakesh, the listener is transported to North Africa with driving, richly ornamented lines. The second movement creates an almost Indian atmosphere in its improvisatory feel and impressive range. The third evokes South America with its lively, dancing jazzy rhythms and features a notable extended cadenza.
The Latin America vibe continues with Ncore by Roland Szentpali. As this rousing, hip-swaying encore progresses, the listener almost forgets that the performer is playing euphonium and becomes absorbed in the perfectly captured style. Famous for his challenging euphonium concerto, Jukka Linkola’s new Euphonia is an extended two-movement work of epic proportions, contrasting energised funky passages and broad melody. Next, Daniel Hall offers a characteristically fascinating work, Wheeap!, inspired by jungle drum, bass and reggae delivered in a performance of pure energy! This continues in Andy Scott’s From This Earth, which explores the themes of courage and determination in a minimalist, yet spirited work. For an encore, Fabian Bloch switches to bass trumpet in a cheeky rendition of Daniel Schnyder’s 2005 work Karachi, which transports the listener to the Arabian Sea in a cascade of technical flourish.
Fabian Bloch has indisputably proved the potential of the euphonium in the ‘jazz trio’ setting through an outstanding level of performance and repertoire, which fuses traditional forms with a plethora of styles. Combined with excellent recording and understated, yet informative presentation, this innovative disc will have a lasting appeal for audiences, including those far beyond the brass band sphere.

Vintage - David Gillingham - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
This is undoubtedly one of the modern classics in the euphonium solo repertoire. It has been used in many recitals, auditions and competitions over the last 30 years or so, since it was first performed in January 1991. Here at the Euphoniumstore we are offering this now for the very first time! It's beautifully produced in the USA by C.Alan Publications and as well as the piano part, we offer the solo part in both treble and bass clef.
Vintage combines Gillingham's intimate knowledge of how to write effectively for the instrument. This composition features wonderful soaring lines in the euphonium (ascending up to the high C's, and higher in an optional element of the cadenza) while at the same time mixing in a jaunty and highly rhythmic 5/4 section. All the technical aspects of the piece, while challenging, are well thought out and effective for performer and audience.
Vintage was premiered on January 18, 1991 at the Midwestern School Band and Orchestra Conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan by the Big Rapids High School Band with Ed Mallet as euphonium soloist.
Highly recommend, if You are an advanced player, or very enthusiastic and ambitious amateur!

Blue Lake Fantasies (Suite in Five Movements) - David Gillingham - Unaccompanied Solo Euphonium |
||
|
Commissioned by The Leonard Falcone International Euphonium Festival, Blue Lake Fantasies is a virtuosic work intended for the professional euphonium player or an advanced student. Cast in the form of a five-movement suite, the work seeks to exploit both the technical facility as well as the lyrical quality of the instrument. Each movement is a fantasy and bears a name which could be associated with this Fine Arts Camp situated at Twin Lake, Michigan. Therefore, each movement is programmatic in that it reflects the spirit or image suggested by the title.
“Firefly” is a technical etude of sorts which simulates the lightning-fast firefly on a hot summer’s night. Sudden changes of dynamics and style in this movement are indicative of the elusive firefly as it darts through the summer air, sometimes flickering and sometimes resting in the grass.
The second movement, “Moonlight Across the Water,” is lyrical and expressive, capturing the emotion felt by the composer on many occasions while contemplating the serene beauty of a lake adorned by shimmering moonlight.
“All That Jazz,” the third movement, salutes the jazz program at Blue Lake with its swing tempo and stereotypical rhythms.
The fourth movement, “Ancient Native Air,” is simplistic and lyrical. It is based on the Chippewa Indian tune “My Music Reaches to the Sky.” Michigan has a rich Native American history and it seemed appropriate to include this wonderful old tune.
The fifth and final movement, “Party-Antics,” is a musical romp with cliché melodic patterns and rhythms. The music is intended to capture the spirit of celebration at a party gathering on the last day of camp. There is, however, a bittersweet wrinkle in all this fun: a soaring and majestic secondary theme reflects the sadness as new found friends depart from camp and go their separate ways.
Blue Lake Fantasies was premiered by Brian Bowman on August 12, 1995 at The Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan.

“Songs for One and More” is a collection of unaccompanied and multi-tracked original and adapted music for euphonium and tuba. Recorded during the 2020 quarantine this marks the first album of newly recorded solo material from Matthew Murchison since 2004.
This is indeed a very clever and brilliant CD. Put together by the charismatic Matt Murchison. It's quite extraordinary what he can do in the studio with some time and some imagination. Incredible arrangements and what a range this guy has!!

Introducing Dr. Matthew Murchison
Dr. Matthew Murchison wants to make his corner of the musical world a better place. If his concerts were a Dickens novel the first sentence might be: “It was the highest of brows, it was the lowest of brows. ”Matthew believes everyone deserves high-quality, interesting, and funny entertainment, from contemporary electronic music to songs about cat anuses.
Matthew has a varied career as a performer, composer, arranger, educator, conductor, and producer. Matthew has been called “one of the finest players of his (or any) generation.” In a more humbling tale, at age 17 he was approached by an elderly lady during a retirement home performance and told to “STOP IT!”
Matthew was a member of River City Brass in Pittsburgh, PA from 2002-2015, where he was a featured soloist hundreds of times. His solo performances with the River City Brass have been broadcast across the country and his comedy songs have been enjoyed by tens of people from every dark corner of the internet.
As a musician, Matthew primarily plays euphonium, tuba, and ukulele, performing exclusively on the XO euphonium. Under a full moon you may hear him play trumpet, bodhran, or didgeridoo. He has served as producer for CD recordings and can be heard on solo, chamber, large ensemble, and rock band albums. Matthew has performed solo and chamber music concerts all across the United States as well as in South America, Europe, and Asia. He has been able to perform with such groups as the Brass Band of Battle Creek, the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” Mr. Jack Daniel’s Original Silver Cornet Band, Denver Brass, the Pittsburgh Symphony, and the Dallas Wind Symphony.
Matthew self-publishes a number of his compositions though his website, while others may be obtained only after completing a series of magical quests. Recent performances of his award-winning compositions have taken place across the US, as well as in Japan, South America, and Europe. He released his first solo album entitled “Everyone But Me” in 2003. As a member of the River Bottom Quartet, Matthew’s arrangements and playing can be heard on the album “In Too Deep.” Matthew’s newest album, “Reminiscence,” is a collection of American songs and folk tunes and is available on his website now!
As a conductor, Matthew has worked with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra Brass and Percussion Ensemble and has served as a guest conductor/clinician for honor bands. He has been a soloist multiple times with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra as the euphonium-playing Santa Claus, making Art performing his variations on “Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer.” The Santa beard is very itchy. He has also been hired to write jokes and perform as the emcee for concerts, and has been a judge for international performance and composition competitions.
Digital Download - Pastorale : My Joy and Crown - Howard J. Evans - Euphonium and Piano sheet music |

|
This piece was composed for Steven Mead and first recorded on the UFO album in partnership with Brighouse and Rastrick Band. It's dedicated to Steve's father Rex Mead and Howard penned this arrangement of the beautiful hymn tune Ascalon (Rex's favourite tune)in the spring of 2019.
Howard is close friends with Rex and Sylvia Mead. He has also worked closely with Steven Mead, notably on two previous CDs, Brassin’Mozart 2006 and Locomotion.
The tune was originally a Silesian folk song, and the German text was printed for the first time in 1842. For more information regarding Howard J Evans please visit www.howardjevans.com
In the last days, Steven and Howard have produced a video performance of this work, which also gives an indication as to the story behind this beautiful piece.

Three Fantasias (from Nos.7,8,9 from 12 Fantasias for Violin) - G.P.Telemann - adapted by Roland Szentpali |
||
|
Here is a brand new publication from Editions BIM, for solo unaccompanied euphonium, and it's the music of George Philipp Telemann.
The great Hungarian tuba player, composer and arranger Roland Szentpali has adapted these three fantasias for Violin.
These are sure to prove to be great stylistic and musical challenges to euphonium players everywhere, for the keen amateur and advanced players.
From the publisher:
The collection of 12 fantasias for solo violin (TWV 40:14-25) by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1757) was first published in Hamburg in 1735. The Italian influence of the sonata and concerto is clearly evident. The fantasias no. 7, 8 and 9 selected by Roland Szentpali are the most suitable for adaptation for brass instruments, while the other nine make use of double-stopped technique, a rather Germanic tendency in works for solo violin.
We see this as a great new addition to the repertoire for solo euphonium; and very suitable for recitals, examinations and competitions.

Gramercy Euphonium Album (4 extended solos) - Peter Graham - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Here is a brand-new album of four extended solos by the fantastic Peter Graham. This is published now, end October 2020 and is sure to be a very popular album with all euphonium players. All the solos are pretty advanced, although there are some very 'kind' alternative sections (ossias) in the extreme range sections.
These are sure to be taken up and used by advanced students, ambitious intermediate players, and top players alike.
The four works are as follows:
1. Cossack Fire Dance (From Call of the Cossacks) - Peter Graham
2. Fantasy on Sempre Libera - Verdi arr. Peter Graham
3. A Minstrel Boy (From Gailforce) - Perter Graham
4. Encore - Peter Graham (based on Spinnlied by David Popper)
Each of them are quite a workout, but with the piano accompaniment provided, can be really great solos to master and add a real zip to your practice routine!
Highly recommended.

Here is the brand-new Flugel horn bell cover recommended for all those concerned about staying protected during the COVID-19 pandemic and as bands start to begin rehearsing again, perhaps you should think about one of these! Washable/multi-use.

Denis Wick has teamed up with a leading Northern textile company to produce new stretchable bell covers that reduce the risk of spreading harmful airborne droplets and aerosols produced by brass instruments. The covers are very easy to fit and make no perceptible difference to the sound of the instrument. The player might notice a very slight difference in response in the high register, but the sound remains true from low to high.
This product will be popular amongst school ensembles, amateur bands and professional brass sections alike. The safest way to play brass music is outside with the recommended distance between players of 2m – 3.5m. If playing indoors with the minimum distance (2m) between players bell covers can reduce the spread of germs and viruses greatly. Remember that venting water keys can spread germs too, so be careful to have a cloth or some paper to catch any water from the instrument, and to dispose of any paper safely.
Ideal for school ensembles and band rehearsals
Our partners making the bell covers are a traditional family-owned Manchester-based business who started spinning and weaving cotton in the nineteenth century. They are a company that we have enjoyed working with for many years, and in recent months they have been busy making PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for the NHS. CD - Changing Weather - Hidenori Arai (euphonium) and Hatsumi Shimizu (piano) |

Hidenori Arai, Euphonium
Hatsumi Shimizu, Piano
The long-awaited 2nd CD of euphonium player Hidenori Arai. Like the first album "NASOTA", the new songs "Sonata for Euphonium and Piano No.2" "Impression in Those Days" "Inori " composed by Hidenori himself, inclduing the album title song "Changing Weather".
from Golden Hearts Publications Global Store:
Like the first album "NASOTA", the song "Sonata" is included in the first song. What a cool genius this is! As a euphonium player, the level is much higher than the previous work. While keeping the subtle narrative as it is, the sound is further refined, the range of expression is further expanded, and I'm looking forward to the third album as soon as "How far will this person evolve?"
This time again, his own 4 songs (1 more than the previous CD). Other than that, the previous work was Bach or Schumann, but this time it is Gilles Martin, Mendelssohn / Steckmest, Glinka, Jan Bach.
The first album was exposed with energy and passion, which was also attractive, but this second album keeps it a little bit secret (although it is full of passion) and the selection of songs It has a stylish finish overall.
To that extent, his narrative is more gentle and mellow. It is an album that accepts everyday changes as described in the title, enjoys those changes, and responds to those changes, going through the changing times. Gentle & Dandy.
Like the previous work, Arai himself is the producer. Especially in terms of sound as a CD, I think it was quite sophisticated.
The piano is Hatsumi Shimizu, as in the previous work. It is a good combination.
Euphonium CDs are interesting because amazing CDs are coming out all over the world. Euphonium enthusiasts should buy this "Changing Weather" without hesitation."

Euphonium Concerto - Paul Mealor - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Here is the new Euphonium Concerto, by Paul Mealor, composed in 2017, that was premiered and recorded (Chandos: Symphonic Euphonium Vol.2) by David Childs.
It is a truly wonderful and very difficult concerto, only for the advanced player!
The work is inspired by a Gaelic poem about lost love, telling the tale of a fisherman and his wife. She accompanies her love to the shores of the sea to wave him off; but tragically he never returns. Each day she returns to the sea and sings to him, but no answer ever comes. In the tradition of Celtic songs it is dark and full of passion and pain.

Flight - Philip Wilby - Euphonium (or Flugel,Cornet,Trumpet) and Piano |
||
|
Flight is a wonderful extended solo by the great British composer Philip Wilby.
It was composed in 1992 for Mark Walters who was then the flugel horn player with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
Since that time it's gone on to also be a very popular solo for advanced euphonium players, and fantastic for recitals, competitions and serious music events!
The composer writes:"Flight is a virtuoso solo which seeks to investigate many of the various aspects of flying. It attempts to portray the effort of powered flight, the ease of gliding and soaring, the thrill of rising on natural thermals, and the chaotic swirling of rapid descent."
Philip Wilby biography:
Born in Pontefract in 1949, Philip Wilby was educated at Leeds Grammar School and Keble College, Oxford. Wilby attributes the awakening of his interest in composition to Herbert Howells, whose extra-curricular composition classes he attended while a violinist in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. A serious commitment to composition developed during the years at Oxford and, having gained his B Mus in composition in 1971, Wilby continued to write music even while working as a professional violinist (first at Covent Garden and later with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra). He returned to Yorkshire in 1972 and is Principal Lecturer in Composition at the University of Leeds.
In recent years, Wilby has established a very significant reputation in the field of brass band and wind band music. His first commission for brass band - The New Jerusalem (1990) for the National Youth Brass Band - was an instant success and led to further commissions: Paganini Variations (a BBC commission in 1991 for the Grimethorpe Band); Flight for solo flugelhorn and band (Grimethorpe, 1991); Revelation (1995, for the British Open Championships). Much of Wilby's recent wind band music has been commissioned by the Fresno campus of the University of California, where he has had a regular residency since 1985.
Wilby has also given much time to writing for liturgical purposes and works include St Paul's Service (1988) commissioned by St Paul's Cathedral for John Scott and the Choir of St Paul's Cathedral, and The Trinity Service (1992) commissioned by Norwich Cathedral for the 1992 Norwich Festival of Contemporary Church Music.
Other recent projects include a commission (The Cry of Iona) for BBC2's 1992 series of music videos for Advent; and, in 1993, the second symphony Voyaging, commissioned and premiered by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra; Partita, commissioned by Fine Arts Brass Ensemble and premiered at the Harrogate International Festival; An Imagined Fable commissioned by the Athelas Ensemble and premiered at the Danish Radio Concert House; and a Percussion Concerto commissioned by the English Northern Philharmonia and Yorkshire Youth and Music, premiered in Leeds, performed by Chris Bradley and the English Northern Philharmonia conducted by John Price-Jones. In January 1995 Philip Wilby was a featured composer in the PLG Young Artists New Year Series, London.
In addition to concert music, Philip Wilby has written educational works and incidental music for television. The academic environment at Leeds has also fostered a number of scholarly interests which have led to a remarkable series of reconstructions of Mozart fragments. In 1985 these were the subject of a Yorkshire television documentary featuring the Amadeus String Quartet, and in 1990 they were recorded by the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields for the complete Philips Mozart Edition.

Arban Studies 1-14 - Ed. Gomm and Mayes (solo part, piano part and 2CDs) Treble Clef version |
||
|
Here is a superb new release from Brass Wind Publications which is sure to bring a new and fresh dimension to your technical practice, with these famous 14 Characteristic Studies, found at the back of the Arban Grand Method.
As well as a beautifully producted solo part and piano accompaniment, this set includes 2 two highquality cds with the piano accompaniment (with a real pianist and real piano!), each in three different tempi: 1. slow practice 2. performance tempo 3. fast performance tempo!
From the publishers:
For nearly 150 years Jean-Baptiste Arban's 14 studies have been an essential part of a brass player's practice routine. Arban's original parts contain many inaccuracies and inconsistencies. Whilst we had no intention of creating an 'Urtext' edition, we have attempted to make each study's phrasing, articulation and where necessary, dynamics consistent with itself, without losing the character and intentions of Arban's manuscript. We, therefore, chose not to add dynamics at the beginning of studies where Arban has omitted them, as you will quickly discover the right dynamic (for you) on practising the piece. You may also, as performer, wish to change or ignore our suggestions, for that is what they are and you must feel free to do so.
This edition includes imaginative piano accompaniments written to reflect the nature of the solo part and enhance the soloist's practice whilst lending these studies also to the concert repertoire. Our hope is that you will gain more from playing these great studies 'with accompaniment’ rather than the traditional way 'without'.
The CD that accompanies this edition contains John Alley's accompaniments in three tempi. One for slow practice, one for general performance and then one for the virtuoso! Also included are stylish performances of all 14 studies by leading UK trumpeter Paul Mayes which are retained for guidance in this euphonium edition. In order to produce an artistically cohesive CD Paul Mayes’ performances are a mix of the two featured performance tempi
Highly recommended!

Here is a superb new release from Brass Wind Publications which is sure to bring a new and fresh dimension to your technical practice, with these famous 14 Characteristic Studies, found at the back of the Arban Grand Method.
As well as a beautifully producted solo part and piano accompaniment, this set includes 2 two high quality cds with the piano accompaniment (with a real pianist and real piano!), each in three different tempi: 1. slow practice 2. performance tempo 3. fast performance tempo!
