Concertpiece by Philip Wilby is an exciting and demanding concert work, suitable for recitals and competitions.

It was written in celebration of the life of David Thornton Snr. (1944-2008) who was the father of the famous euphonium soloist and teacher David Thornton.

In this version with piano it is an outstanding concert work with alternate virtuoso and lyrical sections, with lively rhythms, cross rhythms and syncopations requiring great agility and dexterity. Excellent control is also demanded in the soft high passages. All in all it's a quite outstanding composition, deserving to be more widely played.

Set Adrift - Thomas Kelly - for Euphonium and CD (electronic acc.)

£14.50

This is an outstanding fresh new composition for euphonium and electronic accompaniment (on CD).

It was commissioned by the Canadian euphonium player Carina Lam, while she was studying at the RNCM with Steven Mead. The composer, Thomas Kelly B.1989 Is a Dublin born composer and trombonist currently based in Manchester.

The piece is set outside of the earth's atmosphere, in space. It explores the idea of a person being completely detached from anything (Set Adrift) and having no human contact. There are three sections in this piece each with their own emotional ranges. The opening section has a feeling of loneliness, while the middle section has a feeling of enjoyment which turns to despair as the piece fades out into the dark, and unending universe.

This work was recorded on Steve's Dream Times album, and a sample of this work and others from this album can be heard here.

Highly recommded.

Ths is the second track on Steve's Lyrical Virtuoso CD, and has been highly popular. Now you get the chance to perform it yourself!

Sérenade Napolitaine - Ruggero Leoncavallo/Vertommen

Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857-1919), the composer of two such popular tunes as Vesti la Giubba and the song Mattinata didn’t have the easiest of lives as a composer. In 1899 Leoncavallo was constantly moving and being hunted by creditors.  He returned to Paris to prepare I Pagliacci at the Opéra.  While there he sold the editor Choudens, Les deux Sérénades (the Sérenade Français and his Sérénade Napolitaine) for 400 francs (about 2000 euro in current currency) for both songs.  The Sérénade Napolitaine is an unadulterated love song that sounds to be an authentic Neapolitan folk song.   In the Sérénade Napolitaine the merry troubadour sings for his beloved and begs her to receive his confession and answer his prayers, because life is to love.

Not difficult to play and sure to be appreciated by your audience!

Another big 'hit' from the Lyrical Virtuoso CD was this wonderful piece of music by Mahler.

Here is it now published for euphonium and brass band (piano acc also available)

Ich bin der welt abhanden gekommen (I Am Lost To The World) - Gustav Mahler/Luc Vertommen  This is one of the most beautiful of all songs in the history of classical music. Ich bin der welt abhanden gekommen (1901) is one of the five Rückert-Lieder by Gustav Mahler.  The Rückert-Lieder are a song cycle based on poems written by Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866). The first four songs of the Rückert-Lieder were premiered on 29th January 1905 in Vienna, with Mahler conducting himself. The poetry’s tone of peaceful resignation is captured and amplified in Mahler’s music. He was a master at composing music to convey complex emotions with seemingly simple melodic lines.  The transparent interweaving of the instrumental and solo lines and the subtle fluctuation between inner tension and repose represent one of Mahler’s supreme achievements. In the brass band arrangement Luc Vertommen captures the subtle colours and the fragile Mahlerian orchestration in a colourful version for brass exploring the illuminating colours of a harp, the melodic percussion and muted brass to the full.

A tremendous challenge for the advanced soloist !!!

As heard on Steve's Lyrical Virtuoso album BOCC126

This is the version for euphonium and brass band. The version with piano accompaniment is also available on this site.

Niccolò Paganini composed his Second Violin Concerto in Italy in 1826 and performed the premiere himself the following year at La Scala, Milan. The third movement, Allegro spiritoso, owes its nickname, La Campanella to the little bell which Paganini prescribes to presage each recurrence of the rondo theme. The character of the bell is also imitated in the orchestra and in some of the soloist's passages featuring harmonics. This movement has served as the basis of compositions by other composers, such as Liszt and Johann Strauss. La Campanella is renowned for its intricate and technically demanding solo passages with flashy finger work, numerous double-stops and constantly bouncing bow.  It was such a crowd pleaser that Paganini often chose to perform it as a stand-alone showpiece. La Campanella has become a popular display piece with transcriptions available for other solo instruments.  Luc Vertommen challenged Steven Mead to the impossible by arranging La Campanella as a euphonium solo.  For this virtuoso arrangement Luc Vertommen had to convert the multi-octave original full of seemingly impossible acrobatics into an (almost) playable version for a brass instrument.  Luc Vertommen was inspired by the shortened version played by Leonid Kogan (1924-1982) one of the greatest representatives of the Soviet School of violin playing. Steve really enjoyed this ultimate workout.  The sound of a little bell will always remind, even haunt him, of the countless hours necessary to master this work!

This is the Airs Espagnoles - Pablo de Sarasate Arr. Luc Vertommen in an arrangement for Euph and Piano. The version with brass band is available on request.

Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) was a Spanish violinist and composer.  As son of a military bandmaster he began to play the violin at the age of five.  As his abilities developed, he was sent to study under Jean-Delphin Alard at the Paris Conservatoire at the age of twelve.Sarasate.  Sarasate had been publicly performing since childhood and made his Paris debut as a concert violinist in 1860.  The popularity of Sarasate's Spanish flavour in his compositions is reflected in the work of his contemporaries.  For example Édouard Lalo’s dedicated his Symphonie Espagnole to Sarasate and Camille Saint-Saëns composed his Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso especially for him.

Sarasate also achieved some fame as a composer of virtuoso violin music.  His compositions are mainly show-pieces designed to demonstrate his exemplary technique. The best known of his works is Zigeunerweisen.  His Airs espagnols op. 18 is dedicated to his friend, the Spanish tenor Lorenzo Pagans (1833-1883.  As his two books of Spanish Dances, his Airs Espagnols are a musical tribute to the folk music and especially the dances of his native country.

Just released, the piano accompaniment version of this simply brilliant solo by Herman Pallhuber.

BLISS - now released for Euph & Piano. First Performed in 2011 by Steven Mead for Wind and BrassBand, performed recently at RNCM Brass Band Festival in Manchester in its present form (transcribed by Peter Knockaert).

In two main sections, the first being expressive and quite slow and then, following a short cadenza, a stunning rhythmic and virtuosic Allergo Vivace. A central slower contrasting section introduces the main 'blissful' them which then returns in the finale. A huge crowd pleaser.

Watch/listen to a live performance (with wind orchestra) in La Coruna, Spain by Steven Mead.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ren6ONUHVTU

From the publishers, Beriato Music : Bliss is one of the most spectacular euphonium solos around. It was commissioned by the euphonium virtuoso, Steven Mead. This two-part concerto brings all the characteristics of the instrument into the spotlight: it contains a slow, colourful section that resembles a typical English air, in which the full round warmth of the instrument is revealed, followed by an extremely virtuoso, dynamic fast movement. A great one for any soloist looking for a challenge!

There are many highlights on this album, in particular Roland's stunning performance of his own arrangement of Carmen Fantasy, and a quite stunning rendition on trombone of Pearls II, that Steven Mead recorded on his Pearls album with the RAf Central Band.

Highly Recommended.

All of us in the low brass world love and respect Roland for his incredible skills as a composer, arranger and performer.

This is one of his two new CDs, and this one shows his outstanding dedication to the history of our current instruments, with simply brilliant performances on the Ophicleide, French C/Bb Tuba, Bombardon/Tuba in E flat, Vienna Concert Tuba in F,  Bombardon/Tuba in F, Contrabass Tuba in BBb, English Military Serpent in C, Cinbasso in C.

It is quite remarkable how at ease and virtuosity sounds on each of these instruments. He is real leader in this aspect of low brass performance, and this album is really something to treasure.

Here is the new CD Romance by the outstanding French euphoniumist Bastien Baumet, accompanied by one of the leading piano accompanists in Europe, Mathilde Nguyen.

It is a really beautiful programme, with lots of contrasts. Despite the title there are also moments of outstanding technical virtuosity, as well as some simply world-class lyricism.

The CD is highly recommend.

Here is an interview that Bastien did for the popular brass band website 4Barsrest: http://4barsrest.com/articles/2016/1585.asp

We are sure you will enjoy Thomas Ruedi's new CD Madrigal.

Thomas's playing is so highly regarded around the world. You will hear for yourself why on this beautiful album.

Highly recommended!

Thomas writes:

"Sixteen years after releasing my first solo CD «Elégie», I am delighted to present my new solo album «Madrigal». A lot has happened in my life and career as a musician since «Elégie». I was given the chance to perform numerous solo concerts throughout the world, meeting so many wonderful people – fellow musicians, audiences, students – with all of whom I share a deep passion for music. I feel very privileged to live my life as a musician!

My admiration for the great Romantic composers has not changed throughout these years and «Madrigal» is another statement of it. The name «Madrigal» is assumed to be derived from the Latin words cantus matricalis meaning a song in the mother tongue. I found this to be quite fitting, as I feel that perhaps my musical “mother tongue” speaks the language of Romantic expression.

I want to express my sincere thanks to Ivet Frontela, who has been such an inspiration for this recording project"

Symphony Concertante - Roland Szentpali - Euphonium and Piano

£23.95 - £22.75
Reference:  SMBIM19
Stock:  In stock In stock

The Symphony Concertante was commissioned by the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra and premiered by the composer himself in July 2015 on serpent, cimbasso, ophicleïde and saxhorn. Roland Szentpali dedicates this work to his friend Steven Mead and to his French friends who play saxhorn and the French instruments.

This is a really outstanding addition to the euphonium repertory. Roland Szentpali is a supremely gifted composer, in addition to his tuba performing skills. His Pearls and PearlsII as well as his Sketches1998 have been well-received by performers and audiences. There is a freshness and spontaneity about his music.

With Symphony Concertante we see a maturing of his harmonic and melodic language, which ranks this is one of the most important works composed for our instrument in recent years.

The first movement is entitled Introduction, which alternates between some recitatives as well as bold striking gesture in an Allegro tempo. The recitative section returns at the end before a dramatic climax.

The second movement is entitled Passepied (a Breton dance similar to a quick minuet, popular in the 17th and 18th centuries.) and is absolutely charming and intoxicating.

The third moment, From Nora, once again shows Roland bringing elements of his personal and family life into his compositions, and here the music is a times passionate, gentle. it ends peacefully .

The final movement 'Play, is in a super-fast tempo, quarter note equals 240! As you might expect it is indeed fun to 'play', and you need three very fast fingers to coordinate all this at tempo. The quick figures are interspersed with a couple of andante sections with a short and exuberant finale, ending on high concert C.

This work is really highly recommended by Steve, and of course he is honoured to receive the dedication this work, along with mutual low brass friends, very active in France.

This is certainly near the top of the list of super impressive euphonium concertos we have, and that this was composed just over 20 years ago by the Finnish composer Yukka Linkola, who is equally skilled in the jazz world as he is in the modern classical world.

This concerto came to prominence thanks to the performances and CD recording by the Finnish euphonium star Yukka Myllys.

It goes without saying that this work is not for the fainthearted. The high range peaks at high concert F and goes down as low as pedal Eb.

It is quite beautiful music, with a few gentle jazz elements heard. This is very clever writing indeed and this concerto has justifiably and its place in perhaps one of the top five euphonium concertos in existence.

Total duration, depending on tempi is 26-27 minutes, and the concerto is in three movements.

This is Volume two in this very enterprising and beautifully produced series, published in France by Gerard Billaudot.

Get these pieces in volume two are more extended, and cover a delightful array of styles. Some of these are quite challenging, but the 'average' player (I hate to use this expression) Will find them all achievable with a little bit of practice.

The music polity of the CD is outstanding and these are pieces that you could perform in public with the backing CD.

There are 15 pieces within average duration of about three minutes each. You won't get bored with this book!

Although this has been available in the French market for a short while, I think at the moment it is quite unknown to the rest of the euphonium/ baritone music world.

These are really beautiful pieces, that can be used for study or performance, average length around 2.25 minutes each and 16 pieces in total. I swear practice has never been so much fun! The accompaniment is a band consisting of piano, guitar, bass, drum kit and percussion.

The level of this volume one is set at a high level to the Euphonium Passion Vol.1 and is a little more demanding in terms of stamina and range.

I'm pretty sure this book and its sister volume, number two, is going to be really popular!!

This is the second volume of Euphonium Passion, composed and arranged by Gilles Martin.

Once again this book makes for very interesting and relaxing practice, but of course it is a step up in difficulty from book 1, and will make a nice challenge for high school and intermediate players. The accompaniment is a delight on the ears, and as with volume one, you have a piano part, and also this CD backing, which you can also perform. I'm convinced this series is going to prove to be very popular, as it is incidentally already in France.

The two books in the series are very special in terms of what it offers the musician. This book, volume one, is really aimed at a young, junior high school player, but I'm convinced that many older players will also enjoy this too. The CD accompaniment is very well done, and many of the pieces are in the kind of pseudo-French folksong style, but with some very interesting harmonies and twists that make for very interesting study and hopefully enjoyable performances. There are 18 pieces in total here and arrange in duration from about 2-4 minutes for each piece.

Now your family really won't mind you practising! This is not guarantee, but I have sincere feeling about this!

This is another brand-new piece for the Euphoniumstore, but it is not newly composed. For a couple of generations this solo has been one of the most popular original solos in the repertoire of the euphonium in Spain. Even though it is designated to be played on either tenor saxophone or euphonium, it is still highly regarded and highly challenging for euphonium players in Spain, and hopefully increasingly around the world.

It is highly melodic, at times very dancelike, some big intervals and goes up the high concert D. There is also some very gorgeous melodic writing. The finale is challenging but very exciting, quite a ride.

Steve first encountered this piece when he first went to Spain around 1988, and subsequently recorded it on the World of the Euphonium Vol.2  CD.

Highly recommended, but quite challenging piece

These four inventions make for very challenging playing. They've been composed by one of the most important figures on the French low brass scene, Arnoud Boukhitine.

Total duration only about eight minutes, and each of the four inventions demand utmost concentration and precision from the duetists. The high nd low range is not demanding, and can be played without fear of fatigue, at least not from the lips! I think the brain may get tired first.

Really refreshing duets in a modern language.

The first and third movements are basically fast, although always lyrical and the second movement is one of the most beautiful second movements that we have in our entire repertoire.

This is indeed a very impressive and multifunctional euphonium mute, from the Wallace company.

This is an improvement on their previous cup mute, and gives a tremendous array of colours that possible. As you can see from the photographs, the cup is removable.

It is big, and colourful (shiny metallic blue), and quite heavy, but in my opinion is the best euphonium cup mute on the market at the moment.

The straight mute is what you get when you remove the cup, and is also a very versatile mute.

We have to add on some shipping costs as it is shipped in a very large box for safety, and as I said, the mute is a little bit heavy, but it is perhaps the ultimate 2 in 1 mute that we have!!

Shipped by trackable shipping.

    From an article of www.4barsrest.com

    Recommendation from Steven Mead:

"Steven Mead recommends the B# Virtuoso Brass Instrument Cleaning Kit   I suppose I’ve always been quite fastidious about keeping my instrument clean. There’s no question that an instrument that’s perfectly clean with everything well lubricated, performs better. And I’m interested in that!   Over the years I’ve had students play for me, and with many of them, immediately I’ve detected that their instrument hasn’t been well maintained, or perhaps hasn’t had an internal  clean for some considerable time.  When someone says they put some water through it, or even that they’ve bathed it, they presume this will remove all the build-up of grime that can have such a detrimental impact on playing, in particular tuning.  It always amazes me that people spend so much money on their instruments, and then look after them so badly. It’s like having a car that you never get serviced, and of course you shouldn’t be too surprised when it lets you down.  I been using this Cleaning Kit myself for about five months now, and it’s been selling very well on my web store www.euphoniumstore.net.  I know my customers are as satisfied as I am.   The Instrument Soak solution really works, and it’s almost identical to having my instrument professionally cleaned by the manufacturers in Germany.  The brushes are also well-designed and finish off the internal clean to perfection. Then to get a fully professional finish, the Avocado oil is really outstanding, as good as anything I’ve ever used. I can’t recommend this highly enough. Everyone should have one of these kits at home."

Mark Wilkinson (Principal Cornet of Foden’s Band), Dr. Brett Baker (international trombone soloist and Rath Clinician) and Foden’s Band are endorsing the new range of Bsharpbrass (b#) cleaning kit and natural oils.

Said a spokesman for b#: “Players have long cleaned their instruments with washing up liquid, many of which contain salt. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand that water plus salt results in possible corrosion.”

The kit consists of an Instrument Soak that cleans the instrument from the inside out, removing the unpleasant biofilm from your instrument pipework, and clearing oils and greases, leaving your instrument with a pleasant citrus scent and an easy next-time clean, anti-static coating.

After the soak, you have a finishing Avocado Polish that gives your instrument that sort after Championship finish, and b# has teamed up Helin of Germany to include a quality purpose-made brush and cloth pack to make the Virtuoso Brass Instrument Cleaning Kit the only product of its kind.

To complete the range, b# has also introduced a range of 100% natural oils and greases, which are non-petroleum, non-synthetic lubricants made from natural oils, with added food grade fruit flavourings to enhance your playing experience.

The range was launched at the recent North West and Yorkshire Regional Championships, and Mark Wilkinson commented: “This is a must accessory for every brass musician and the only product to clean instruments of its kind that I recommend.”

Brett Baker also endorsed: “The b# Cleaning Kit maintains my trombone as new, I’ve used washing up liquid for years without knowing about the damage that it can do long-term.”

    You Tube demo

    lyrical

adjective - (of literature, art, or music) expressing the writer's emotions in an imaginative and beautiful way.

     virtuoso

noun - a person highly skilled in music or another artistic pursuit.

Steven Mead reunites with Brassband Buizingen and conductor Luc Vertommen, eleven years after they made their highly successful ‘Euphonium Virtuoso’ album.

Our soloist, well known for his lyrical artistry and outstanding virtuoso technique has chosen a programme  which perfectly shows off the combination of these fine attributes,  accompanied by a brass band at the top of their game, with a brilliant conductor who also arranged many of these works

As most euphonium enthusiasts know, Steve has recorded many CDs since his first official release, Rondo in 1991. If you include all his albums; solo albums, the education orientated CDs, those with the British Tuba Quartet, and guest appearances, the number is now in the mid-seventies!  For him, recording is a passion, and a mark of his true dedication to the euphonium.  Over the years he has recorded with various ensembles; brass and wind bands, chamber orchestra, wind quintet, trombone quintet, brass quintet, ten-piece brass ensemble, organ, piano, multitracked Mead and electronics. With each genre he has impressed with his musicality, unique rich sonority and virtuosity. For him this instrument has almost no limits.

In 1995 Steve recorded an album, Euphonium Virtuoso, with the outstanding Belgian ensemble Brassband Buizingen.  This album won several international awards that year. He also really enjoys the collaboration and friendship with their conductor Luc Vertommen who is a visionary arranger as well as fine conductor.  So it was decided to get back in the recording studio, eleven years on, and make a second album together. Reflecting on the literature to be recorded, the title Lyrical Virtuoso seems to be such an apt title.  It includes works from the present day, as well as the marvellous Euphonium Concerto No.1 by John Golland, and then looks back even further to virtuoso works from the nineteenth century, and especially recognises the influence and works of the legendary violinist composer Niccolò Paganini.  Six of the ten works are receiving their premiere recording with brass band, and all will be available shortly for performance by those brave enough (especially the highly virtuosic works) to take them on. At the heart of Steve’s musicianship is his singing tone, a feature of his entire career, and here his lyrical approach can be appreciated to the full in some simply breathtakingly-beautiful melodies. We hope you enjoy Lyrical Virtuoso.

A Review by Iwan Fox, 4Barsrest.com

Eleven years after he last linked up with conductor Luc Vertommen and Brass Band Buizingen, Steven Mead returned to the recording studio in 2016 for this thoughtful release.

Lyricism in brass playing is in danger of becoming an eroded art: The pursuit of ever more audacious technical brilliance has made it an increasingly difficult musical language to understand as well as master.

    Polyglot

However, both elements can still be combined, and here the soloist states his case for appreciation with a cultured sense of authority. Mead is one of the last true polyglots.

The ten tracks are a series of mature performances of eclectic inspiration - from the bullish Iberian swagger of Bandman’s ‘La Corrida de Toros’ to the poetic resignation of Mahler’s ‘Ich bin der welt abhanden gekommen’.  In between we touch on elements of reflection as well as celebration, lasting delicacy to bluesy ephemera.

    Expertly realised

The virtuosity on display is skilled and artistic; the lyricism imaginative and beautiful (essential characteristics he himself identifies in his perceptive sleeve notes). The performances are enhanced by equally considered accompaniment (including the use of a harp) and subtly coloured arrangements, expertly realised by Luc Vertommen.

    Same coin

The centre-pieces are balanced counterpoints: Golland’s darkly hued ‘Concerto’ is a work of personal complexities hidden in plain view; layers of seeming transparency that still obscure a central core of troubled emotions.  In contrast, Proto’s fantasy on the famous ‘24th Caprice’ by Paganini lays all bare - sumptuous, rich, extrovert.

They are still two sides of the same musical coin though. And it is a currency that Steven Mead shows throughout is still worth its weight in gold.

    Iwan Fox

Listening Post number 141, April 2017, Tim Mutum.

Eleven years after his first disc with Brass Band Buizingen, Steven teamed up again with the Belgian band and the result is an amazing program that really enables the soloist to demonstrate his talents. From the 10 solos, six premiered on this disc, four left me completely spellbound. The Rondo from Paganini's Violin Concerto No.2 is clearly a fiendishly difficult piece to master, but Steven's articulation is so precise that none of the immense detail is lost. A demonstration of the virtuoso half of the title. On the lyrical side, The Auld Noost is a gorgeous slow melody and its eloquence and charm really tugs at you. In Gardens of Peace is more sombre as Philip Harper's solo creates the aura and peacefulness of the Commonwealth War Graves Cemeteries on the Somme and the playing is beautiful. Luc Vertommen contributed most of the arrangements for the CD but he left the best to last with his arrangement of Mahler's highly emotional I Am Lost to the World, which uses harp, percussion and muted brass to create more distinctive colours. A blissful ending to an immensely musically satisfying CD of which Steven Mead is rightly proud

    Brassband Buizingen

The band was founded in 1879 as a fanfare band by workers of the local porcelain factory.  In 1975 it was amongst the first Belgian bands to convert to the traditional British-style brass band instrumentation.  Since then, the band has played a leading role in the Belgian band world, gaining prizes at competitions and recognition for its musical approach both at home and abroad.  Over the years it has given notable concerts and contest performances, released numerous CDs and, in 1997, had the particular honour conferred on it of being named ‘Cultural Ambassador of Flanders’.

More recently, BBU won the Belgian National Championships three times, in 2009, 2012 and 2015 and represented Belgium at the European Championships in Stavanger, Linz, Oslo and Lille.  In 2011 BBU was runner-up at the World Music Contest in Kerkrade and in 2012 the band was runner-up at the All England Masters.  Brassband Buizingen won the Flemish Open Brass Band Championships VOBK) three times.  The band was honoured by SABAM (the Belgian Society of Authors, Composers and Publishers) with the prestigious Fugue-Trophy for their contribution to Flemish band music and received the title of Cultural Ambassador of their hometown, Halle which is based in the South of Brussels.

Brassband Buizingen had the honour to play in concert with Steven Mead several times and record the highly acclaimed Euphonium Virtuoso CD in 2005 with Steven Mead and team up with him again 11 years later for his latest solo album.  You can find more information on their website http://www.brassbandbuizingen.be.

    Conductor Luc Vertommen

Dr. Luc Vertommen was born in Leest (Mechelen) where he made his first acquaintance with wind music through the local fanfare band.  He studied cornet, music theory and piano at the music academies in Mechelen and Willebroek.  Further musical studies were completed with a triple diploma in trumpet, music history and band conducting at the Lemmensinstitute in Louvain.  He also obtained a first prize in chamber music at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels, a master degree for conducting and Doctor of Musical Arts (2011) at Salford University, Manchester, (UK).  He has immersed himself full-time in the world of band music as a brass teacher, player, conductor, arranger and writer.

He conducts Brass Band Buizingen (Belgium), Brass Band Nord-pas de Calais (France) and is head of music school in Deurne (Antwerp).

He can be heard on more than 25 highly acclaimed CD recordings and is editor and artistic director of Band Press VOF.  He regularly is invited to conduct or adjudicate around Europe and obtained the International Buma Brass Award 2014 for his international work within the band movement.

His interest for the past and for band history started a series of books and CD recordings.  For this Anthology of Flemish Band Music, he received the Fugue-Trophy by Sabam (the Belgian authors right association) in 2011.  He unearthed many pages and hours of original music by Belgian composers and his interest for the future is shown in his collaboration with many contemporary composers.

As an arranger some of his arrangements (especially those made for fanfare band and brass band) are played worldwide.

Here is another brand-new work, beautifully produced by Editions BIM, by the American tuba player and composer/arranger Michael Forbes.

This is a very welcome addition to a genre that needs excellent new works. At around six minutes duration this work should be very popular at college level for recitals and auditions. It is challenging but not over difficult, with a range from low concert E to high concert B-flat. It is rhythmic and driving with some large intervals and superb use of varied dynamics.

It is certainly fun to play, and I think also entertaining for audiences on a first listen.

Martin Ellerby: The Four Elements (Partita for Solo Euphonium and Brass Band) Commissioned by and dedicated to the Black Dyke Band (Musical Director Professor Nicholas J. Childs) and Gary Curtin (euphonium) with funds made available by the John Golland Trust.

This is the version for euphonium and piano.

    Composer Martin Ellerby writes:

"The first performance was given by these forces in the RNCM Concert Hall, Manchester, on 23 January 2015 as part of the RNCM Festival of Brass.

The Four Elements was written for Gary Curtin and the Black Dyke Band as part of a recording project of my music for brass band, released in 2015.

Having previously written a large scale concerto for the euphonium I decided to write something much more concise though still enabling the soloist to display flair and lyricism in equal measure. I aimed at around two minutes per movement, which meant I would be creating a set of miniatures, and based each on one of the four elements of earth, water, air and fire though they are primarily given their Latin names of terra aqua aer ignis in the score. The term is used to indicate that the work is a collection, or suite of pieces, and in keeping with former examples uses both song and dance forms to provide suitable musical structures.

    1. Terra (Earth) an intrada set in ABABAC form in which A, for the band, is built on a 12 note row, B is a duet between the soloist and elements of the band and C an enigmatic . The ‘elemental’ interval of a perfect 5th proves dominant in all aspects of the opening movement.

    2. Aer (Air) cast in the form of a fleeting scherzando - the music makes play between the rhythmic possibilities of contrasting common and compound time signatures giving it an unsettled edge.

The flavour is light and breezy, possibly somewhat oriental in manner.

    3. Aqua (Water) a lyrical interlude or intermezzo , where the soloist has more of a free reign to their lines and the band support in a delicate legato style.

    4. Ignis (Fire) - the virtuosic fianel celebrates the spirit of a pagan dance. Much use is made of mixed metres and the cornets and trombones remain muted throughout giving a metallic quality to the ensemble. Just prior to the climax proper there is heard a fiery statement of the traditional Dies Irae (‘Day of Wrath’) melody in the form of a band interlude.

One other point of interest is that of the percussion section which I have tried to vary in each section, acknowledging their vital contribution to the overall sound world. ‘Earth’ has darker combinations of timpani, marimba, bass drum, a low suspended cymbal and tam-tam. ‘Air’ utilises two antiphonally placed glockenspiels, a bright suspended cymbal and triangle. ‘Water’features delicate tuned percussion consisting of vibraphone, a ‘guest’celesta, crotales and a binding mark-tree. ‘Fire’ exploits most of what has not gone before with rhythmic, punchy bongoes, side drum, xylophone and timpani plus a set of tubular bells, cymbals and tam-tam in the closing stages."

This version here is with Piano accompaniment and the brass band set is also available on this site

    Duration: approx 9.25minutes

Here is a really outstanding CD by one of the USA's leading young euphonium soloists, Joel Collier, accompanied by an excellent brass band, conducted by Kevin Stees.

The repertoire is fresh and exciting and is representative of the excellent new music to be found within the realms of Salvation Army music. Many of the works are receiving premiere performances.

    Here's a sampler to listen to: https://soundcloud.com/joel-mark-collier/shadowed-demo

    Demondrae Thurman writes:

"Shadowed, the premiere recording by Joel Collier, is an excellent example of what's good about the future of music. The recording is loaded with terrific playing by the soloist and the brass band. Diversity of repertoire is one the highlights of the recording. The title stands out. The composition is masterful and Collier delivers a beautiful reading of the solo voice. People who are familiar with euphonium and brass band will enjoy the juxtaposition of virtuosity and lyricism that are synonymous with both. Collier is a terrific young euphonium player and that ability is on display throughout the recording! His commitment to the instrument and creating new works is admirable. I look forward to watching his career unfold." - Demondrae Thurman, euphonium soloist

Here is the fabulous new album from Steven Mead, his first for two years.

Dream Times has been in the planning for several years and many of the works are brand-new compositions, receiving their first performances, and new arrangements.

It has a theme of music and dreams, giving a fascinating feel to the CD. The Rhapsodia suite which ends the album, comes from a fashion show in which Steve was the guest soloist, in Milan in September 2007. With this we hear some funky variations on Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, that were arranged at the request of the Roberto Di Camerino fashion house! This is a brand new realisation of all the solo parts, 8 individual works, which will no doubt amaze all those who hear it !

The title track, Dream Times (anagram of Mister Mead), is a delightful light and at times highly virtuosic work, composed for euphonium and small wind/brass ensemble. With these two pieces we are in the lightest of moods, carefree and joyous.

With the three works by Piazzolla accompanied by string quartet, we delve into more deep human emotions and states, Anxiety, Sleep and Fear. The sound of the euphonium and strings has long been a dream for Steve, and here it is finally realised.

There are two brand-new works for brass ensemble, Aces, by Frank Gulino and Concertino by the young Singaporean composer Lee Jinjun, for brass quintet and brass sextet respectively. These highly optimistic works, with some exquisite lyrical moments, are sure to find their way into mainstream literature in the years to come.

Perhaps the darkest and most sinister 'dream' on the album is iPhonium by Roderick Skipp. With this work and most of the others there is a strong connection with the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester where Steve is Professor of Euphonium. All the accompanying musicians are current leading performers at this school. The second piece with electronics, Set Adrift by Thomas Kelly was compose one of Steve students at the RNCM, Carina Lam.

When you listen to Ave Maria by Piazzolla we recoomend you pour yourself a glass of your favourite tipple and enjoy the sensuos 6 minutes of Steve playing his euphonium, accompanied by a large brass ensemble.

We hope you enjoy this stunning new album, and to all those of you who enjoy Steve's recording ...be sure to get this!!

It is released on the Bocchino Music label, catalogue BOCC124. Playing time 79 minutes

The presentation of this album is quite superb, with six panel digipak, complete with 16 page full-colour booklet, with lots of information on all the works.

    Enjoy!

Review from Chris Thomas, Brass band World Magazine July/August 2016:

“If there is a solo performer in the brass band world that can be relied upon not to repeat himself musically, it is Steven Mead. His never-ending quest to innovate and expand the repertoire of the euphonium is, once again, at the heart of this enterprising and beautifully packaged new solo release.

Steven Mead’s playing is an unalloyed pleasure throughout; technically astounding as we have come to expect, but perhaps more importantly exhibiting a musicality in which every note is produced and placed with loving care;  the melodies and phrasing being given both space and an unerring sense of line and shape.”

Perhaps the most famous instrumental vocalises, now you can enjoy them with piano accompaniment on the supplied CD.

The Bordogni Vocalises have been transcribed by David Schwartz for trombone or euphonium. This volume includes 12 more advanced vocalises along with an audio compact disc with Bordogni's original piano accompaniments for all 12 vocalises.

The perfect way to develop your 'vocal' style !

    Difficulty level 3/6

Supplied with solo part in BC and accompanying CD.

These relatively new additions to the literature can really be useful to young players. With the employment of the piano CD the students will have to learn to keep good time and will also learn better intonation at a faster rate. The trombone part as transcribed from Bordogni is slightly different at times from the Rochut editions, but Schwartz does a good job indicating these differences. He also provides a list for comparison between the two edition numbers. Other benefits of the book are that there are 3 etudes provided again in different keys at the end of the book, and 2 etudes with faster tempos (although in one of these cases it is difficult to make music at such a tempo). Schwartz also provides a nice overview of Bordogni and concisely explains his edition. Overall this is a welcome addition to our literature, for we now have the ability to rehearse these famous etudes with a CD accompaniment, and it is likely that some may use these for public performances. Grade 2-3.

    Comments from Teachers

"David, you have made a monumental contribution to trombone instruction, now and for the future."

    - Richard W. Bowles, Gainesville, FL

"David, Thank You! My students and I love it. In my studio Bordogni/Rochut will be phased out and replaced with Bordogni/Schwartz. Thanks for providing this valuable service to the trombone community."

    - Nathaniel O. Brickens, University of Texas at Austin

"David, I have my students working out of book one of your set and they are enjoying it immensely. Now that they have the CD versions you have done, they don't know how they ever played them without --- I had one girl yesterday who sang the piano intro before she began playing --- pretty darned neat!"

    - Peter Ellefson, Indiana University

"David, Congratulations on your Bordogni editions. The Bordogni-Rochut vocalises have served as the musical basis for most trombonists' legato and "singing" standards. How wonderful it is to have them available in new editions which include CD piano accompaniments. Trombonists have the opportunity to develop and refine their harmonic understanding in the practice room."

    - Tom Everett, Harvard University, Founder ITA

"David, You'll be happy to know that I have officially stopped using Rochut. All my students are now directed to use your editions. The accompaniments make such a difference in their practice and I appreciate the scholarly information and advice."

    - Mike Hall, Old Dominion University

"David, Good for you! Your series of Bordogni etudes with accompaniment CD are a great addition to my active teaching and practicing materials. I use them to promote good intonation, rhythm, musicality, memorization and ensemble techniques. The simplicity of the accompaniments provides structure but places the musical responsibility upon the trombonist. Buzzing along with the CD in the car is a fun and easy, no-hands approach that not only serves as a good warm-up, but improves clarity of pitch and flexibility with pleasant melodies rather than rigid exercise."

    - Scott Hartman, Yale University

Now that they have the CD versions you have done, they don't know how they ever played them without --- I had one girl yesterday who sang the piano intro before she began playing --- pretty darned neat!"

Perhaps the most famous instrumental vocalises, now you can enjoy them with piano accompaniment on the supplied CD.

Please note the solo part is in Bass Clef.

The Bordogni Vocalises have been transcribed by David Schwartz for trombone or euphonium. This volume includes the 12 vocalises along with an audio compact disc with Bordogni's original piano accompaniments for all 12 vocalises.

The perfect way to develop your 'vocal' style !

    Difficulty level 2/6

Grade 2-3.

Sonata for Tuba and Piano - Martin Ellerby

    Programme Notes:

This Sonata for Bass Tuba, in one movement, was written for James Gourlay and this set of music comes complete with a CD of the Sonata, performed by James Gourlay.

The work is designed as a recital piece and is as concise in structure as the composer deemed possible. Cast in a single movement there are three independent 'mood' sections each of a contrasting nature. Mood 1 (Agitato) opens the work with a 'fanfare' style motif followed by a 'tango' subject. These alternate until Mood 2 (Delicato) is reached and a much more expressive quality emerges. Mood 1 returns briefly to be followed by a return of the Mood 2 material. This then leads into a new, and once only played, Mood 3 (Tranquillo – misterioso) in which the solo instrument is muted. The work closes with Mood 1 plus an additional coda/cadenza finale section which exhausts the 'tango' properties. The work has a tonal centre of F (it certainly begins and ends on that pitch) though moves around on a pair of related note rows, one aggressive, the other mild to provide contrasts based on classical sonata principles. As a closing comment, the tango property was included not just because I wanted a more familiar aspect to be present and something which audiences could relate to but, mischievously, because the work's dedicatee is married to a dancer, albeit a Brazilian and not an Argentinian!

The first performance of this work was given by James Gourlay (tuba) in the Bruckner Haus, Linz, Austria on 29th June 2012 as part of the International Tuba/Euphonium Conference.

James Gourlay also gave the US premiere with Siu Yan Luk (piano) in the Ford Hall, Ithaca College, School of Music, on 19th April 2013 as part of the North East Regional Tuba & Euphonium Conference.

Sonata for Euphonium and Piano - Martin Ellerby

    £19.95
    Reference:  SMMEM001

Here is an exciting new work from the pan of Martin Ellerby. Many euphonium enthusiasts will know and love his famous Euphonium Concerto, and now, nearly 20 years later, comes his Euphonium Sonata. It is not as technically difficult as his Concerto, and therefore much more accessible to many euphonium enthusiasts. This set of music includes a CD recording of the Sonata played by Shoichiro Hokazono and Benjamin Powell (piano)

    Programme Notes from the composer:

The work is designed as a recital piece in three movements and was composed as a gift for the Japanese virtuoso Shoichiro Hokazono for having made the first recording of the orchestral version of the composer's Euphonium Concerto with the Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Tatsuya Shimono released on the Kosei label in in Japan in 2008.

     1. Tokyo Toccatas

A giocoso piano figuration forms the backdrop to the first subject which makes five appearances (the starting phrase becoming shorter and the ending phrase longer each time) against which the solo part plays a free fantasia style line in lyrical mode which gets more and more animated on each reoccurrence. A second subject provides a foil to this material with the piano adopting a more chordal 'vamp' style against the soloist's contrasting scherzando line. This subject also occurs five times losing a bar at its start and one at its close each time. The briefest of codas concludes the movement at the point where parts of the subject matter have run their course and have no more material to lose. This is the most intellectual of the sonata's three movements though the challenge was to not make it sound so. I once read in an academic tome somewhere that this kind of thing is 'permissible' in first movements!

     2. Midnight Cowboys

In April 2013 I was in the USA as composer-in-residence at LIU (Post) on Long Island, New York State. The university was very close to Oyster Bay where I knew the British film music composer John Barry had a residence. A little research narrowed this down to Center Island and my host very kindly drove me down this exclusive drive with its private police station and waterside palaces. Although Barry had passed away in January 2011 for me his presence was all around and this, the work's slow movement, is a tribute to him. Written in a free style with no tricks or devices, except for a hint at a harmonic progression suggested by Barry's score to John Schlesinger's 1969 film Midnight Cowboy, here is a moment of repose and reflection where the 'brass cello' can sing its cantabile line in salute of the fallen hero.

     3. Dance Diversions

A melting pot of  Bartok, Stravinsky and Bernstein type allusions provides a dynamic finale where the soloist can display dexterity and virtuosity in  measure. Both instruments in this sonata have been equal partners and here they combine towards a flamboyant and absolute conclusion.

The first performances of this work were given by Shoichiro Hokazono (euphonium) and Ami Fujiwara (piano) on a concert tour of  five Japanese cities  in November 2013.

Arranger and Music Editor Eric Wilson has provided euphonium players with another gem!
Saint-Saëns didn’t write this piece for euphonium, of course – the title is the arranger's. He did, though, toward the end of his life, write sonatas for three ‘neglected’ instruments: oboe, clarinet, and in 1921, bassoon. It's from this, his final work, that the present transcription has been made. Aimed to fill a gap in the euphonium repertory of material of some substance suitable for advanced recital use by advanced players who can boast great technique and a full command of the instrument’s range. Following the classical three movement model an opening movement alternates between major and minor key areas. A perky scherzo follows; also trading major and minor key sections in a virtuosic jaunt. (This movement works well as a stand-alone piece, too.) The interesting final movement begins with an extended adagio before a fast, showy final section requiring great panache!  Highly recommended Difficulty 4/6 Duration: approx 13 mins Supplied with : piano part, solo part TC and BC (incl tenor clef)

Full brass band set - Euphonium Concerto - Karl Jenkins

This highly popular concerto has already become a favourite of many euphonium players, and now here it is in the full version with brass band.

This work was commissioned by David Childs who gave the first performance with the BBC Concert Orchestra at the Last Night of the Welsh Proms in 2009. 25 minutes in duration, the concerto is in four movements rather than three, loosely following the 'head-heart-feet-whole body' format of (humanist) symphonic design. Jenkins has stated, 'As is my wont, I've endeavoured to make the concerto somewhat quirky and "off the wall".'

It is a work overridingly designed to connect with the listener, arguably Jenkins' greatest gift and a task it achieves with considerable aplomb. The individual movements also stand alone equally well when presented as individual solo items.

This version, with brass band accompaniment, is a fantastic addition to the repertoire for any serious 21st century euphonium player!

Here is a new contemporary work, part of the Leading Edge series of original compositions for the euphonium. About 'Calling', the composer writes, "Very often, it seems, my music takes on a life of its own. I wasn't sure what I was going to do when I started this composition but it didn't take long for the piece to decide what it wanted to be. The sources of the tape part are not important. The inspiration for the Euphonium line is not important. In my mind, this piece simply IS.  The title, Calling seemed appropriate to me since, to my ears, it sounds as if the soloist is calling out to this eternal droning E-flat that is omnipresent. In some ways, this feels like the first work in this style that I have ever composed. In other ways, it feels like I've been writing this way forever."

More about the Leading Edge Series :

“The Leading Edge is a series of solo works for euphonium that push boundaries. The formats and structures are varied, using composers from many different backgrounds, but the concept is a constant: to provide our repertoire with fresh blood. The works are innovative yet practical; pushing boundaries isn’t always about being super contemporary or extraordinarily difficult, though there are certainly some challenging pieces presented here!

The compositional process is fascinating, how new ideas come to fruition and are given a voice through the chosen instrument. The composers involved in this project have been selected very carefully – musicians who see their work as having a distinct voice and strive for this in their musical language or sound worlds within their music.

From unaccompanied works to electro-acoustic repertoire, from conventional form with piano to programmatic music with chamber groups, the series covers a broad spectrum of styles that will suit euphonium players with the desire to find new expressive avenues for our instrument. We have enjoyed learning and performing these pieces as we hope you do too.”

Nocturne and Dance was commissioned by David Childs and was written in November and December 2012, receiving its first performance by David Childs and Christopher Williams on 13th October 2013 during a recital at Cardiff University's Concert Hall forming part of the Arcomis International Brass Event.

The Nocturne (A Dream) opens with a slow, quiet, and rather menacing slow march on the piano, while the euphonium has a quieter and less aggressive role. Tension rises as the music for both instruments becomes more agitated, faster, and louder. Whatever the dream is, it is increasingly disturbing until the sleeper wakes and the tension subsides. The opening music now returns, but the menace is held in check: the nocturne fades away.

The Dance, by contrast, is a much more extrovert movement with each instrument playing off rhythmically against the other in a texture that becomes more and more complex, leading eventually to a final flourish bringing reconciliation between the two instruments.

Let There Be Funk - D.Edward Davis - Amplified Euphonium, Octave Effects Pedal and Digital Playback

Let There Be Funk was premiered by tubist Rex Martin in February 2002 at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. The music is as it suggests, mostly written in a funk style with the occasional lyrical interlude.

The funk passages move between tempos in a schizophrenic way, deliberately unsettling the listener and cleverly weaving a structure that builds throughout the work.

Although originally intended for Tuba, the music is performed here by using Euphonium and guitar octave effect pedal. The resulting double octave effect and sound distortion is ideal for the writing.
The electronic track is performed by Brian James, Mark Carlson, Rex Martin and the composer D. Edward Davis.

Phoenix Song - David Harrington - Euphonium and Piano

    £14.95 - £14.75
    Reference:  SMLEA07
    Stock:
    Quantity:

Phoenix Song is a dramatic and challenging fantasy for Euphonium and Piano. The piece was inspired by the myth surrounding the great firebird of Persian legend. According to the story, the Phoenix spends 1000 years living on earth before returning to its nest, only to incinerate itself in enveloping flames as if part of an eternal ritual. The spirit of the bird is then released and reborn in a new body. I wanted to recreate this enchanting lifecycle in music using the Euphonium to personify the legendary bird, and capture the song that the Phoenix sings on its perpetual journey.

The work is divided into a storyboard of events beginning with the bird's flight back to the nest, a reflection on the nostalgia of its heroic life, moving onto the discovery of the nest, the incineration and finally the rebirth of the bird.

The Euphonium part is highly decorated and aims to sound organic and improvisatory, particularly during the quasi-cadenza at the very beginning. Virtuoso, precise and expressive playing is required in the faster sections. The Euphonium is given much lyrical writing in equal measure to passages requiring aggressive gusto and command by contrast.

The role of the accompaniment is to reinforce the scene painting, whilst twisting and turning the thematic material, propelling the story forward. The very heavy sounding piano passages extending to all registers of the instrument reflect the vast life span of the bird, coupled with violent flutter tonguing from the Euphonium (towards the end of the work) to resemble the furious flames of the nest.

The final section is very tonal, with celestial semi-quaver decorations in the piano part and a warm, cantabile Euphonium theme that should sing high in the instrument's range, soaring like the firebird it seeks to represent.

Here is Analyse and Interpret, a contemporary work for solo euphonium, part of the Leading Edge series.

The composer writes, "Analyse and Interpret was originally written in 2006 as a sister piece to Waiting For a Pain Hit!??!!? Along with ‘Pain Hit’ it was my first composition since graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

The piece remained un-played until 2013, when several Euphonium players asked me if I had an un-accompanied work they could use. After a major re- working the piece, in it’s current form, was premiered by James McLeod at the RWCMD.

Analyse and Interpret is written without bar-lines and without any performance directions - the aim for this being to give as much musical freedom to the performer as possible. Indeed, the title gives a concise explanation for my hopes for the piece - study it and make it your own! There is no right or wrong, only self-expression.”

Tiamat is an exploratory programmatic work for solo euphonium and brass quintet, one of the new works in The Leading Edge series of contemporary works for euphonium. The title hails the name of a dragon, from the fantasy role-playing adventure game and the 1980s children's cartoon: Dungeons & Dragons. Tiamat is a five-headed dragon. Each head is a different colour and has its own elemental properties:

    LIGHTNING/blue (trumpet 1), ACID/black (trumpet 2), ICE/white (horn), FIRE/red (trombone), and POISON/green (tuba)

The instruments of the quintet each represent one of these heads. Each element has its own specific theme in the piece, introduced by its relative instrument. The thematic ideas for each element are intended to be a musical representation of its properties and effects.

    LIGHTNING - disjointed staccato notes.
ACID - repeated 3-note pattern, overlapping in texture, abrasive.
ICE - repeated staccato (and stopped) notes with a dim. Brittle, yet sharp.
    FIRE - flutter-tongue/trem. effects.
POISON - descending chromatic scale, oozing, seeping.

The ‘rip's in the quintet are intended to be the snapping and biting of the jaws of the dragon.

The solo euphonium takes the role of the hero in the tale, who has sworn to defeat the dragon and restore peace to the surrounding lands.

Following subsequent revisions, the work later received its official premiere on January 7th 2004 in London's Purcell Room on the South Bank, performed by David Childs and pianist Harvey Davies.

Composed in a jazz-rock idiom the work seeks to explore both the technical and lyrical boundaries of the euphonium soloist and pianist. The music is rhythmically complex throughout and following a return to the original material; Skunk comes to an abrupt end with a series of fortissimo grunt noises depicting the sound a skunk might make!

Here is Kuklos, another from the new Leading Edgew series of contemporary works for euphonium.

Kuklos, meaning ‘full circle' in Greek, portrays a performer practising alone in an empty hall. This is reflected in the work's three sections, the first of which incorporates the performer walking into the hall and taking the instrument from its case. The piece then starts when the mouthpiece is placed, triggering a delay effect in the tape part. This then continues with sounds associated with an off stage warm up; blowing air through the instrument, checking valves, and long notes. This all becomes intertwined with the pre-recorded tape (digital playback track).

The second section is more virtuosic and incorporates many extended techniques such as multiphonics, half valve glissandi, flutter tongue, and singing through the instrument. This is then followed by a final ‘warm down' section, incorporating the soloist playing a choral before packing away his instrument, and leaving the hall.

The harmonic material of the solo euphonium is based on 2 harmonic series; the first being concert Bb at 58.27Hz, the second introduced later in the piece being concert C at 65.4Hz. For this reason the piece could be described as Spectral in its compositional style. We first hear the introduction of the harmonic series in the tape part as a distant descending scale, and as this moves to the foreground, it slowly starts affecting the soloist's harmonic material.

The tape part was constructed entirely from recorded euphonium sounds played by David Childs. The composer treated these sounds in the studio using a wide variety of manipulative software. Some of which consisted: Ring Modulation, Transposition, GRM, Resonators, Spectral Inverter and delay. Kuklos received its first performance on 28th June 2004 at the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama performed by David Childs in the presence of the composer.

Nightwalker - Kit Turnbull - Euphonium and digital playback

Here is Nightwalker, one of the pieces in the new Leading Edge Series of contemporary works for euphonium.

Nightwalker was originally composed in 2002 for Linda Merrick (Clarinet) and Philip Mead (Piano) and received its premiere at Vestry Hall, London College of Music, October 2002. Nightwalker was re-arranged into its current form for subsequent performances, with the piano part incorporated into the Digital Playback.

Written originally as a Clarinet piece, this version for Euphonium was adapted for David Thornton and was first performed at the New Zealand International Brass Festival, 22nd September 2012, Wellington Salvation Army Hall, Wellington, NZ.

Nightwalker depicts a descent into nightmare. The Euphonium assumes the role of the dreamer, with the CD providing the soundworld of the nightmare itself. Wind, thunder, and lightning are intertwined with ghostly footsteps, bells ringing, various forms of wildlife, and a whole host of other sounds in what is a light-hearted take on the whole genre of ‘horror’.

The score is laid out with the Euphonium part sandwiched between the guide track that contains reference points for the SFX, and an outline of the original piano part. Timings are given in minutes and seconds and correspond to the Digital Playback timing.

The Digital Playback track for this piece is available as a free download from this page.

This publication comes complete with composer biography and performance tips from David Thornton. The work can also be heard on David Thornton’s CD Parallel Realities (WOS079) available on this site.

Here is another brand new work, part of the Leading Edge series of contemporary works for the euphonium.

Jazz Disasters was premiered by David Childs, the dedicatee of the work during a solo recital at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester in 2004. The genres of music I'm most influenced by are jazz, and the "Barbaric" tendency of early 20th century composers like Bartók and Stravinsky. I suppose they have rhythmic ostinato in common, and to me, having at one time played guitar in a big band, the marriage between (in this case) funk and brass seems a natural one.

David had a big input into my piece, encouraging me to explore the extreme regions of the instrument, and of its virtuoso capabilities. It is a kind of collision between the "Balkan" rhythms of the first and last sections and the funk-fusion feel of the middle, with some walking bass thrown in for good measure. The piece should feel like a runaway train, always on the point of coming off the tracks.

Here is the brand new debut CD release from perhaps the 'hottest' new brass ensemble in the UK today.

    The ensemble consists of :

Jamie Smith - Cornet (Co-Principal Cornet, Grimethorpe Colliery)

Jonathan Bates - Tenor Horn (Principal Horn, Black Dyke)

Michael CavanaghBaritone (Solo Baritone, Grimethorpe Colliery)

Chris Robertson - Euphonium (Solo Euphonium, Wingates)

Welcome to the debut CD of the award-winning A4 Brass Quartet.

Formed in October 2013, the quartet members have roots in British brass banding, with all players holding principal seats in some of the country’s top bands. Whilst adhering to these original roots, as a group they continue to develop and commission new repertoire. The quartet has a unique blend of instruments, with a cornet, tenor horn, baritone and euphonium creating a distinctive sound that stands out from the standard brass quartet.

This CD features original music by some of the leading composers in the UK and Europe, who have written works specifically for A4 Brass. These composers include Martin Ellerby, Edward Gregson, Oliver Waespi and Nigel Clarke to name a few. Mists of the Mountains by the quartet’s very own Jonathan Bates is the piece that the group won the Christopher Rowland Ensemble of the Year Award with, so poignantly features as the title track of this debut CD.

Based at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England, A4 Brass is comprised of principal players from some of the UK’s leading brass bands, including the world famous Black Dyke, Grimethorpe Colliery, and Wingates bands. The quartet has a unique blend of instruments, with a cornet, tenor horn, baritone and euphonium creating a distinctive sound that stands out from the standard brass quartet. The great technical capability and musical versatility of the quartet was recognised by the Royal Northern College of Music in the group’s first year together. Firstly, the quartet won the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble of the Year prize and after consequently being invited to represent the brass department at the overall prize, went on to win the Christopher Rowland Ensemble of the Year Award, claiming both the judge’s and audience vote.

The quartet perform concerts and masterclasses all over the UK, and 2015 saw the first mainland European excursion for A4 Brass as they accepted the invitation to perform in the Trakai Fanfare Week in Lithuania. The quartet has also featured on national television and radio, most recently for ITV’s 2015 Christmas Carol concert and live on BBC Radio 3 for their ‘In Tune’ broadcast in December 2015. Here's another great new work from the pen of Manchester based composer and saxophonist, Andy Scott.

Fujiko initially explores the low register of the instrument before embarking on a journey upwards! A beautifully scored reflective and melancholy piece.

A number of euphonium players have performed 'Fujiko' over the past couple of years, adapting the music from the tenor saxophone and piano version. In this publication the composer, Andy Scott, has re-voiced the piano part specifically to balance with euphonium, and has created a definitive part for solo euphonium.

    Its a gorgeous mood piece.

New from Andy Scott and Astute Music an engaging, thought provoking and emminently playable piece !

Respectfully Yours was commissioned by Fabian Bloch, and is scored for euphonium and piano (and can be heard on his Drive CD, also available on this site.)

The world premiere was given by Fabian Bloch (euphonium) & François Killian (piano) on the 6th of September 2015, and recorded on the CD ‘Drive’. Andy Scott had the privilege of collaborating on a number of occasions with composer/pianist Richard Rodney Bennett, and composed Respectfully Yours in memory of RRB, who passed away in December 2012.

    The composer writes;

“I was delighted when Fabian approached me to commission a new work, and it felt appropriate to write a piece that was melodic with jazz-influenced harmony that I think of as a simple ‘thank you’ to Richard Rodney Bennett, for being an inspirational musician and kind and generous person. I know that Fabian is a virtuosic and sophisticated musician, and felt that a new work with this underlying sentiment would be in very capable hands.

Steve Mead says, "I've been using the Ultrabreathe for over 10 years now and have noticed a large improvement in the quantity and quality of air I'm able to use. I was a little scepticle of breathing devices in the past and did buy a few which now collect dust on a shelf somewhere, but the ultrabreathe is quite superb. I think it was developed initially for the medical professional to help people with air 'disorders', asthma etc and has been used by young and old alike and in more recent times by athletes in training and in the last couple of years , by brass and wind musicians. To date I have never met anyone who used it and did not feel an almost immediate benefit from it."

Steve on his routine: "I use it early morning for about 3 minutes, then a minute or so before I play, and sometimes in the interval in the middle of a concert. It keeps my air supply in the highest condition...it actually reduces stress levels and makes you feel better. Sometimes while driving too, although having the ultrabreathe in the mouth can cause a few glances when you have to stop the car...oh well!! It is a resistance inhaler with varying levels of resistance so you can start gently and build up. I try to inhale my full lung capacity in about 3 seconds then exhale , depending the exhalation setting in about 2 seconds. If the exhalation setting is set at maximum resistance you can try to exhale for up to 6 or 8 seconds. Repeat the process about 20 times and thats it, you're done, ready to play...until you feel you need it again. Use it every day and you'll notice a positive improvement with your playing within a week. Don't just take my word for it...try it."

Schumann composed the Adagio and Allegro Opus 70 for Horn and Piano in 1849. In this work he explored some of the possibilities created by the invention of the valve system which made the horn a fully chromatic instrument. The valve system also brought in instruments such as the euphonium, which the Adagio and Allegro is well suited to.

This work has been arranged and performed by other instruments, for violin and cello, for example and more recently has been regarded as a highly popular work for tuba.

This work really suits the euphonium perfectly. Enjoy it!

Denis Wick Aaron Tindall AT5 Ultra  Tuba Mouthpiece - silver plate
This new mouthpiece designed by Aaron Tindall is similar to the AT2U, but with a smaller throat and slightly tighter backbore. It is designed for orchestral F tubas, and has a large cup which is a mixture of a funnel and a bowl with a quite large throat. This is an ideal mouthpiece for an orchestral player using the F tuba. It produces a rich, vibrant sound with plenty of focus. The rim is designed by Warren Deck and is one of the most comfortable on the market. It features just the right amount of widthand bite to give the player a sense of comfort and stability. This mouthpiece produces a rich and vibrant sound with plenty of focus. There is a distinct `shelf' at the bottom of the cup which helps achieve a concentrated power that gives a sound that really projects.

The shank has been very carefully engineered to fit all tubas with the standard `Euroshank'-type fitting. Original lead-pipes from Meinl-Weston and B & S were used in this process. The exact matching of mouthpiece and instrument leadpipe is vital to achieve the correct response from modern German tubas.

Arron Tindall said `I feel that upon trying these new models, the performer will immediately notice an increased sense of improved articulation, intonation, greater endurance, and significantly enhanced power in both the high and low registers. Along with these comes an ease of playing accompanied by a richer, broader, truer sound that we believe is currently unmatched by many of the other competitors in today's market.'

I have a new line of tuba mouthpieces, the Aaron Tindall Ultra Series, launched now with Denis Wick. I designed each of the eight models in consultation with Warren Deck in order to meet the challenging variety of situations facing tubists today.

Here is a very important new CD of contemporary music, played immaculately by David Thornton. He has been involved in commissioning all these works and it must go down as a landmark recording for our instrument. The language is uncompromisinlgy modern so if your favourite euphonium albums are of the tonal/melodic variety this may come as a bit of a shock! But we think you'll be fascinated by the variety of timbres, modern techniques used and the imagination of these outstanding and mainly young composers. Highly recommended.

Mayfly Blues tells the story of a mayfly, a special creature with a short and chaotic life. It's in a jazz idiom and is a very popular work indeed, especially with advanced young players and those maybe not so young too (i.e.Steve!) ! It works great for baritone or euphonium.

    Difficult level 4.5/6

    Solo Parts Included: Baritone TC

it is recorded on Kristy's solo CD: 'Center Stage'

This is the version with piano accompaniment.

Here are the duet version of 'Carmen Fantasy', arranged by Misa Mead, that has been performed to huge critical acclaim by Misa and Steven Mead, to go with the versions with piano/brass band/wind orchestra/fanfare band accompaniment, in the versions made by the Belgian arranger Luc Vertommen.

Please note these are just the duet parts, in TC and BC.

To perform this version you will also need the accompaniments (to the original solo version):

with piano  with wind orchestra  with brass band  with fanfare band . These versions also include the original solo part.

Misa has successfully added a harmonic duet part which shares the original line and added a very fine second voice. Both parts are of equal standard (difficult!)

Here is the brand new Euphonium Song Book Vol.2, a successor to the highly Vol.1 released 18 months before.

Here we have another superb collection of  beautiful melodies; some simple and folk inspired, some instrumental solos, some operative arias and within this collection are some incredible little-known gems !

It's with great pleasure that I introduce the second volume of the Euphonium Song Book.

I'm very grateful to my good friend Luc Vertommenfor for discovering so many fine works to be included in this book. He and I share the same passion for beautiful lyrical music. However, a quick look through this volume will also reveal some music of a very technical nature, and I think this is going to be a real challenge for many musicians, although of course at the heart of all technical playing should be a constant lyricism, and therein lies the challenge. As I suggested with the first book, I would urge all of you to seek out fantastic performances and recordings of the original setting of these pieces, as composers can never write down all the nuance that is now associated with these magnificent pieces. The challenge as always is to go beyond the notes, the black and white dots you see on the page. To really be successful with these you not only need some working knowledge of the original, but really try to find a true vocal quality to your performance. Not enough brass players sing, either in their head to learn the music, or out loud, to fully realise the musical thoughts they have. I was very lucky as a boy to have singing lessons for seven years, and this has never left me. You won't hear me singing in public, don't worry, but I 'sing' with my instrument every day.

Please enjoy these beautiful works, by some of the greatest composers who ever lived, and the mix of these works with some folk inspired compositions. Good luck and enjoy the music making.

The set includes the piano accompaniments to all pieces, and solo parts : TC (Bb), BC (in Bb), BC (in C)

One of the best new works we've seen in a long time.

This work was written with inspiration from the concept of time-lapse photography and videography. It is quite like background music to the scene of stepping back and just watching life from the corner of a busy city street, or even perhaps a bird’s eye view from the top of a skyscraper. From the interaction between the cars in traffic, and the people walking on the side walk, the music was written to be a portrait of, not so much one particular life, but the huge combination of busy lives we see when we look at time-lapse videos and photos of cities. In the 3 movements, this piece uses the music to take the listener on a 24 hour journey from one morning through the following hours of errands and business in the first movement. Then, during the second movement, the listener is taken to the slower evening and late night period, where it would be rather quieter on most days. The final movement moves the listener through the pre-sunrise hours to the next morning, showing the fight through the rush hours and the race to get through the commotion of city interaction to the destinations that people need to go.

Throughout the piece, the music emulates the effects of time-lapse photography and the hectic lives of the busy people by evoking senses of both urgency and peacefully passing time, along with images of people and vehicle lights that linger on even after the source has left. These concepts are very easy to portray by writing for euphonium, as the instrument is agile with rapid performance abilities, and also has a very full, mellow sound which gives great sounding sustained notes. Both of these qualities let the instrument mimic the miniscule aspects of everyday life, as well as the elements of human interaction that hover over a lifetime; it’s perfect for painting a portrait of our lives.

Here's a new and very interesting work from a very talented American composer.

For Those That Wander is a through-composed rhapsody for euphonium with wide-open intervallic melodic gestures and a subtly driving rhythmic and harmonic structure. The work unfolds in three parts – a gentle, floating opening; a brief moment of respite; and a driving, raucous closing.

The work was composed from late-Summer 2011 into the early months of 2012 for the composer’s performance in the 25th annual A. Frank and Bethel C. Gallaher Performance Competition at Morehead State University (KY).

A highly recommended concert/recital work. Much to admire about this work.

Jeremy Smith's Sonata for Euphonium and piano is a three movement work with movements titled Busyness, Meditation, and Service. Busyness represents the busyness of life, how there's always something to do. It features both happy, harmonious sections and chaotic, dissonant sections. Meditation represents the calm after the "crash and burn" from the busyness of life. The final movement depicts a newly energized person recharged after the meditation, and is portrayed through popular music motives.

Tramp, Tramp, Tramp is a fantasia on the Civil War-era tune by the same name, originally writen in 1864. The folk tune, also known as "Prisoner's Hope", was one of the most popular songs of the American Civil War. The song, written from the prisoner's point of view, tells his fellow prisoners that hope is coming. This timeless tune has been used across the musical gamut, including the children's song "Jesus Loves the Little Children" and the Mormon hymn, "In Our Loveley Deseret".

It's set as a traditional theme and variation solo.

Salvation Army musicians will know the theme as that used for the solo We'll All Shout Hallelujah (Audoire)

    Difficulty: 3/6 (intermediate players up)

Denis Wick SM Travel Mute - Baritone

The new Denis Wick SM Baritone Travel Mute.

Over a year in the development stage, this mute, which is closely related of course to the highly successful Euphonium Travel mute, has been eagerly awaited by baritone players.  It sits flush inside the bell, so can sit inside the instrument when in its case, either a hard case or a gig bag.

The performance of this mute is terrific; it's main features being:

  • A quiet and even sound
  • Excellent intonation right throughout the range
  • Even response and feels very natural to play
  • Very clear high and low tones, despite the quiet sound
  • A lie-flat leather handle for easy removal of the mute
  • Doesn't demand extra effort from the performer, allowing the musician to play freely...and still not disturb the neighbours or sleeping children etc!
  • This mute was shown at the National Brass Band Championships at London's Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 11th October 2014 on the Denis Wick Products exhibition stand, as well as the Shanghai Music Show 8-11 October.

Be one of the first to own this great new mute !!

    Weighs only 180 grams

Steven Mead writes: The essential design element is to balance what we want from such a mute. Obviously as it's a ‘quiet’ mute, rather than a performance mute, (although I have seen the Euphonium Travel Mute used in performances before!) it needs to perform its duty to be quiet, and not disturb others, whether you’re at home, in a hotel, or wherever else you choose to practice.  We also need a true tone, not something pinched or compromised, so we need to try to keep the air resistance to a minimum.  It also needs to be in tune. There is no use having a mute that plays a semitone high or low.  We are really delighted how this new mute has worked out, and as with all Denis Wick Products, exhaustive testing is the key, and never being prepared to settle for something that’s not right.  With this new in-bell mute, which fits flush inside the case, I’m hoping baritone players will be really pleasantly surprised how easy it is to play it.  The consistency of sound from lowest to highest notes is really quite fantastic.

As with the Euphonium Travel Mute, sustained strong low note practice with this mute can really ‘open up’ your sound, and so the benefits are not just about its ‘quiet’ credentials.

So now there are no more excuses in the band room; you can practice at home, you can practice in a break at work, and you can practice when your kids are sleeping, or if you don’t want your partner to hear too much!

Here is the superb UFO Concerto by the Dutch composer Johan de Meij.

The composer writes of the work:

UFO Concerto, my first solo work for euphonium and wind orchestra, is not a traditional concerto in the classical sense. It consists of five movements that are thematically related to one another. The opening chord may sound familiar to some listeners: This chord and the first theme are based on the same five-note chord used in ‘Extreme Makeover’ and ‘Planet Earth’ in 2005: a major triad with an added 4th and a 7th. This chord has been obsessively present in my head ever since -- I could not resist using it again! Both the chord as well as the main theme make appearances in various shapes and forms throughout the entire piece.

    I Andante – Con moto
    II Giocoso – Vivo
    III Andante cantabile
    IV Vivace
    V Alla Marcia – Vivace

Jason Ham, solo-euphonium player with the West Point Band (USA), initiated the consortium for UFO Concerto. He performed the world premiere on February 15th, 2012 in Baltimore (MD) with the Peabody Wind Ensemble, conducted by Harlan Parker. Jason also invited British virtuoso David Childs to join the consortium and play the European performances. At the request of both players, I also made a version for euphonium and brass band. David premiered this version with The Cory Band, conducted by his father Robert Childs at the 2012 RNCM Festival of Brass in Manchester, and recorded the wind version on CD [Extreme Beethoven] with the Banda de Lalín.
