About Calabria (Italian folk song with variations)

This composition, structured in the theme and variation form, draws its inspiration from the Calabrian folk song Pacchianella calabrisi. The melody of the folk song is presented here through five variations, each showcasing varying levels of virtuosity.

Calabria was commissioned by Andrea Graziani and premiered by international soloist Steven Mead for the 10th anniversary of the “Armonie dello Stilaro” music association in Pazzano, Italy.

Italian composer, conductor, and clarinetist Cosimo Daniele Bombardieri has been active on the musical scene for more than a decade in Italy and abroad. As a composer, he received various prizes and commissions. Among others the 2018 first prize of the International Call for Scores for Minue for ensemble, and the first prize at the International Composition Competition “Città di Albenga” with Crystals for piano solo.

    About Concerto for Tuba/Euphonium Quartet

This may be Mike Forbes's most expansive and challenging work for the tuba / euphonium quartet. Like Bartók's "Concerto for Orchestra," this composition has no accompaniment and is a tour de force for the quartet.

Drawing on extended techniques (slide removal, multiphonics), Michael Forbes creates a dramatic and colorful work that particularly highlights the virtuosity of each musician.

Michael Forbes (born 1973 in Morgantown, West Virginia, USA), studied first with Mark Lusk and Marty Erickson (Bachelor’s Degree at Penn State University), then with tubist and composer, John Stevens (Master degree from the University of Wisconsin) and finally with world renowned tubist, Toby Hanks (Doctor’s Degree from the University of Maryland). Along the way, he also studyied with Stuart Roebuck, Brian Kingsley and Andrew Duncan (University of Manchester and the Royal Northern College of Music, United Kingdom). He began his career as tuba player, soloist, conductor and arranger with the U.S. Army Band, «Pershing’s Own» in Washington, D.C.

Best known for his fine compositions and arrangements, Michael Forbes has received numerous commissions from a variety of well-known artists and chamber ensembles. Many of his works have been recorded and are also regularly selected in concert programs or as test pieces for international competitions.

As a soloist and as part of the internationally recognized «Sotto Voce Tuba Quartet», Michael Forbes is regularly invited to give performances and clinics at universities and conferences around the globe. He currently teaches at Illinois State University.

    About Homework

When I was in school I hated homework… Very often I just did not do it, got bad grades and my parents were unhappy.

Biology-Cells: the musical material starts with a structure like a DNA cell and makes different mutations.

Chemistry: every note is a name of a chemical such as H (hydrogen) Ca (calcium), Fe (iron), Ga (gallium), Ge(germanium), Ag (silver), Cd (cadmium), Ba (barium), Hf (hafnium), Hg (mercury), Db (dubnium)

Physics: a dynamic is an amount of energy. Changing this energy helps composers dramatize their music. This is an exercise in going far with dynamics, staying perfectly in tune and keeping in balance.

Mathematics: Prime numbers (2,3,5,7,11, etc) are the numbers which can only be divided with 1 or with itself. I played around with all the possibilities of making these dry structures become music.

Homework done! With love for my parents!

Roland Szentpali, April 2012, Hong Kong

Roland Szentpali was born in 1977 in Nyíregyháza, Hungary. He began his musical studies in his hometown; in 1991 he was admitted to the Béla Bartók Conservatory in Budapest, as the tuba student of József Bazsinka and later of Gábor Adamik. At the age of 16 he won the national “Brasses and Percussion” competition, then wrote and performed his first concerto for tuba and symphony orchestra, recorded and broadcast by Hungarian state television. From here, his career as tubist and composer rapidly gained an international dimension. He entered the Ferenc Liszt Music Academy in Budapest where he studied with László Szabó, while taking private lessons with Roger Bobo. Since 1998 he has won first prizes at seven international competitions: Gdansk, Poland; Munich, Germany; Budapest, Hungary; Chéju, Republic of Korea; Brno, Czech Republic; Lieksa, Finland and second prize at the competitions of Guebwiller, France and Markneukirchen, Germany. His opus includes chamber music works, orchestral pieces and concerti for various wind instruments, most of it is published by Editions Bim

The Concerto in D minor, BWV 596, is a notable work in the repertoire of Johann Sebastian Bach. It is a transcription of Antonio Vivaldi’s Concerto for Strings in G minor, RV 156. Bach, known for his exceptional skills in adaptation and arrangement, took Vivaldi’s original composition and transformed it into a concerto for organ.

The transcription process was a common practice during the Baroque era, where composers frequently adapted and rearranged works by their contemporaries or predecessors. In the case of BWV 596, Bach not only transcribed the original work but added his own artistic touches.

In this publication, Michael Forbes takes Bach’s organ transcription and adapts it to the euphonium/tuba quartet. Brass ensembles have the advantage of being able to easily imitate the sound of the organ in its various registers.

"Les Barricades Mistérieuses" is part of François Couperin's Second Livre de Pièces de Clavecin (1717). This musical gem attests to Couperin's mastery of the elegance and sophistication of the French Baroque. The piece captivates with its mysterious charm and timeless beauty.

François Couperin le Grand (1668–1733), a prominent French Baroque composer and harpsichordist, hailed from a distinguished musical lineage. Trained by his father and uncle, both accomplished musicians, he showcased his virtuosity early on. Couperin served as the organist at the Church of Saint-Gervais in Paris from 1693 until his death.

As a composer, his lasting contributions include the 1716 collection "L'Art de toucher le clavecin" (The Art of Playing the Harpsichord). This work, a testament to his mastery, offers insights into Baroque performance. His compositions, known for their expressive ornamentation and evocative titles, exemplify his sensitivity to emotion.

François Couperin's impact transcended his era, and his works continued to influence musicians for centuries. Revered for their elegance and sophistication, his compositions contribute significantly to the rich tapestry of Baroque music. Couperin le Grand's legacy endures as a key figure in the history of classical music.

    About Chaconne

Ferruccio Busoni (1866–1924), an Italian composer and pianist, made significant contributions through his creative transcriptions of Johann Sebastian Bach’s works. His fascination with Bach’s music led him to reimagine compositions with virtuosity, adding unique touches to bring the timeless beauty of the Baroque era to a broader audience.

One of Busoni’s most renowned transcriptions is the “Chaconne” from Bach’s Violin Partita No. 2. This monumental work for piano captures Bach’s essence while infusing Busoni’s expressive interpretations. The transcription showcases Busoni’s virtuosic technique, expanding the tonal possibilities of the piano.

Beyond the “Chaconne,” Busoni transcribed organ works, chorale preludes, and keyboard suites, often adding ornamentations and harmonic explorations in the late-Romantic style. His approach reflected a belief in tradition and the evolution of musical styles, preserving and revitalizing the past.

Scaramouche - Baritone or Euphonium Solo (with Wind band/Harmonie/Concert Band accompaniment

From the composer Philip Sparke - "Scaramouche was commissioned by Katrina Marzella with a grant from the BBC Performing Arts Fund. Undoubtedly the finest baritone player of her generation, Katrina was granted an education bursary from the BBC Performing Arts Fund as a result of winning the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist of the Year in 2004. This has allowed her to commission a series of new works for her instrument, including Scaramouche. In this version for euphonium and concert band, Scaramouche continues Sparke’s series of works which uses the Italian improvisational theatre tradition of commedia dell’arte as an inspiration. Pantomime, Harlequin and, now, Scaramouche draw on the contrasting moods of pathos and comedy characterised by the ‘happy/sad’ masks which symbolise European theatre. A slow expressive ballad, followed by a spirited vivace allows the composer to exploit both the lyrical and technical sides of the euphonium, therefore giving the soloist the chance to display the full capabilities of their instrument."

Omaggio was commissioned by Steven Mead in celebration of his 60th birthday and in memory of his father, Rex. He gave the premiere of the brass band version in Rome in March 2022, accompanied by the Italian Brass Band conducted by Filippo Cangiamilla. The concert band premiere took place on 6th July that year as part of the 2022 Spanish International Tuba Euphonium Conference, accompanied by the Banda municipal de música de Málaga. The concerto is set in 3 continuous movements, which are united by a recurring syncopated interval of a fifth. The first movement, FANTASIA, opens with this motive accompanying an extended monologue for the soloist. This is followed by a lengthy bridge passage by the piano, which is eventually joined by the soloist, who guides the music back to the opening soliloquy, leading to an energetic central section. This develops until the opening material again returns to introduce the second movement, BALLAD, which revolves around an expressive melody for the soloist, interspersed by accompanied cadenzas. The third movement, THE KING TRIUMPHANT, pays homage to Steven’s late father, Rex, and its title alludes both to Rex’s name (‘Rex’ being Latin for ‘king’) as well as his love of Eric Ball’s Salvationist masterpiece, The Kingdom Triumphant. The finale is an energetic tour-de-force featuring an acrobatic 6/8 melody, which is interrupted twice by the magnificent hymn tune, Helmsley, which Ball uses so effectively in The Kingdom Triumphant. A galloping coda brings the work to a close. The sheet music to this wonderful new concerto has just been released and here it is. Alarum for solo tuba was written, especially for James Gourlay, and was first performed by him at the Adrian Boult HJall, Birmingham on February 13,, 1994.

The title of the work derives from an old English word, meaning a 'call to arms', and I have taken this to be a primitive (that is primeval) call, and hence the opening gesture of the piece, which is meant to imitate a tribal like intensity. The opening four note set of pitches is taken from the name of the dedicatee.

The piece is divided into three main sections and runs continuously. The first section is by turns, aggressive, nervous and lyrical. The second section is melodic and peaceful, but reaches a climax when the two themes, lyrical and rhythmic, are juxtaposed against each other. The last section is dance-like in character with changing time patterns which lead back to the very opening statement of the piece.

    About the Author

Anthony O'Toole , born 1988 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, holds a bachelor's degree in Music Theory & Composition from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he studied composition with Daniel Perlongo, Jack Stamp and David Martynuik. He is currently a master's student in Composition at George Mason University where he studies with Mark Camphouse. Anthony O'Toole's music is unique and fresh with its intense rhythmic energy, lush jazz-influenced harmonic language, and his talent for highly effective and colorful orchestration. Mr. O'Toole has written more than 100 works for almost every medium and began writing music in his early teens. In high school his interest in composition stemmed from his studies as a percussionist and love of performing. He also became a competent multi-instrumentalist learning piano, viola, saxophone, clarinet, trombone and tuba. Although he is largely self-taught as a composer he credits many of his teachers for being mentors and advocates of his music. While at IUP he had the pleasure of receiving lessons and attending lectures from guest composers such as Cindy McTee, Samuel Hazo, Christopher Marshall, Frank Ticheli, Clark MacAllister, Richard Danielpour, Bruce Yurko and Drew Hemenger. After graduation from IUP in 2011 he worked full-time as a composer while also working as an orchestrator and arranger for 2 years before beginning his MM in Composition at GMU. In the last 5 years Mr. O'Toole has seen success as a composer winning numerous prizes which include the Grand Prize in the 2012 Garritan Composition Contest for his orchestral work 'CA-91' as well as other accolades and honorable mentions. His music has been featured in the GIA Publication 'Teaching Music Through Performance in Band' (Solos with Wind Band Accompaniment edition) and a large amount of his music is published by Cimarron Music Press, Euphonium.com and Bandworks Publications. In particular, his band music has become rather popular and has been played by some of the finest ensembles including the University of North Texas Wind Symphony, The Indiana University of Pennsylvania Wind Ensemble and the United States Coast Guard Band. His band music and chamber music have been performed all over the country and internationally in Canada, Australia, Tawain, Portugal, Britain, Brazil and Singapore.

The Sonata for Euphonium is a traditional three movement sonata following classical forms. Movement one is lively Sonata Form, Movement Two is a quiet Ternary Form, and a very lively Rondo rounds out the composition.

This is is post-modern; it is Each movement opens strong in the stated key (G Major, f minor) though in each case the tonality wanders considerably before finishing in the home key. The work is descriptive in nature, but not programmatic.

Arcades and Alleyways explores the whole range of the instrument, from a Pedal B Flat to a C three octaves above that note, and requires professional level technical ability.

Is a really interesting work, essentially a Sonata for Euphonium.

Lourens was born in Perth, Western Australia, and attended Scarborough Senior High School, where he won the prize for music in his graduating year. After completing a degree in Music Education at the Western Australian College of Advanced Education, Lourens taught brass and classroom music in public schools, based at Kelmscott Senior High School, and including conducting and teaching brass at Churchlands Senior High School and Perth Modern School. He returned to study at Indiana University, earning a master's degree in music (in Euphonium Performance) in 1992, and a Doctorate (in Wind Conducting) in 1999, working as an Associate Instructor to Harvey Phillips and in the IU department of bands, working with the Marching Hundred. At Indiana, he studied Euphonium with M.Dee Stewart and Daniel Perantoni. He was also awarded a Performers Certificate for the quality of his Masters recital.

From 2000, Lourens has held leadership positions at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (as Head of Classical Music), and has held positions in Singapore(at Lasalle College of the Arts),[1] and in Dubai.[2] His name was also associated with a possible appointment as Head of the ANU School of Music.[3][4] In 2009, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).

A very exciting work for euphonium and brass quintet . composed for Steven Mead and Spanish Brass; The title comes from the constantly-shifting meter and somewhat hectic feel, the melody bouncing back and forth between soloist and quintet, and the shifts between somewhat unconnected sections.

The composer Ben McMillan writes: The main melody was something that had been in my head for a while, one of the many musical seeds that I constantly find myself humming or whistling absentmindedly. This became the first piece I ever had published, and the second ever recorded.

Originally written for an instrument called the Arpeggione (like a fretted cello), Schubert's beautiful Sonata works very well for wind instruments. This arrangement is written by the performer, David Werden, for euphonium and piano. The performance is from a live recital tour of Japan in 1989. A graduate of The University of Iowa, Mr. Werden was the euphonium soloist with The United States Coast Guard Band for more than 20 years. He has performed throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, England, Japan, and the former Soviet Union. Through FM and TV broadcasts, his solos have been heard in dozens of countries around the world. He is a recitalist and clinician, and has performed at local, national, and international symposiums. He was a member of The USCG Band Euphonium/Tuba Quartet, the Atlantic Tuba Quartet, and the Classic Brass Band. He previously taught at the University of Connecticut and is listed in Marquis' Who's Who in American Education. His efforts to expand the role and recognition of the euphonium led the British magazine Sounding Brass in conjunction with the American publication Euphonia to name him "Euphonium Player of the Year" in 1980. He is the first American awarded this honor. In 1981 he was elected to the post of Euphonium Coordinator for the International Tuba-Euphonium Association (formerly called Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association: T.U.B.A). In 1987 he was appointed to the Honory Board of Advisors of ITEA. His many solo performances and his efforts to expand the role of the euphonium in music earned him the prestigious Coast Guard Commendation Medal. He has also been awarded two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, the Coast Guard Special Operations ribbon, two Coast Guard Unit Commendations, and three Coast Guard Merit Somnataorious Unit Commendations. In 1993 he was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda honors society. He has published articles in Euphonia magazine, The Instrumentalist magazine and the T.U.B.A. Journal. He is the author of The Blaikley Compensating System, Scoring for Euphonium, co-author with Denis Winter of the Euphonium Music Guide, and a co-author of the Brass Player's Cookbook. He compiled and edited a series of papers by Arthur Lehman into the book The Brass Musician. He has also published over four dozen arrangements for a variety of solo instruments and ensembles. His website, http://www.dwerden.com/, has become a favorite of euphonium players everywhere. Since moving to Minnesota he has performed with Symphonia (America's Premier Large Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble), the Minnesota Orchestra, the Sheldon Theater Brass Band, was a special guest artist at the International Euphonium Institute, and has been heard on live national broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion.

Euphonium Concerto - Edward Gregson - Euphonium and Brass Band

    Stock:  In stock In stock
    Quantity:

Here is the Euphonium Concerto by Edward Gregson, just published with brass band accompaniment.

This is certain to be a highly sought-after concerto and one that advanced players will want to study and perform in the future.

     Program notes by the composer:

The Euphonium Concerto was commissioned by the Euphonium Foundation UK and was written for, and dedicated to, David Childs. Lasting some 22 minutes, it is a large-scale symphonic work in both its structure and scale. Its three movements, subtitled Dialogues, Song without Words, and A Celtic Bacchanal, explore the full range of the technical, musical, and emotional scope of the euphonium.

The first movement, Dialogues, is concerned with contrast and development, using as a reference point a five note musical cypher (BACH – B flat, A, C, B natural – followed by a tritone F). This cypher is used in various guises throughout the movement and beyond and acts as a ‘pillar’ in an ever-changing musical canvass. The movement’s sonata form structure contrasts highly charged rhythmic ideas with a lyrical second section, where perhaps the euphonium takes on the cloak of a cello with its soaring melodicism. This leads to a central section, with scurrying semiquavers culminating in a frenetic fugal climax before returning to the opening ideas, now further explored and developed.

An extended cadenza, with brief but dramatic interruptions from the timpanist, leads directly into the slow movement – Song without Words. Here, the peaceful mood of the opening tutti section leads to a wistful ballad for the soloist, which pays nostalgic homage to another era long since gone. The opening music returns, this time developing into an intense climax, before quietly sinking into a reprise of the opening music, with the soloist’s ballad now transferred from minor to major. The movement ends quietly and leads without a break into the final movement.

A Celtic Bacchanal is, as the title suggests, a wild dance that takes on some of the character of Celtic folk music (the dedicatee is a Celt, and the composer half-Celt!). Whilst primarily being a technical tour-de-force, a lyrical central section once again exploits the euphonium’s singing qualities, reaching a majestic peroration before subsiding into tranquility. The folk-like dance starts up again, this time culminating, via a reference to the first movement, into an exuberant and life-affirming coda.

The work exists in FOUR versions, with symphony orchestra, wind orchestra, piano (available on this site)and here with brass band accompaniment

They can play gorgeous melodies as well as lightning, fast, technical passages, and often do, not only in the same piece, but sometimes in the same line of music for years, the great Robert King tried to get the Boston Symphony Orchestra to endow a Euphonium chair and make that voice take up permanent residence in the orchestra. Certainly, the orchestral works that exist in the repertoire by Strauss, Holst, and others that score for Euphonium (or tenor tuba) are richer for this addition. The fact that Mr King was not successful in his quest, speaks more to the orchestral worlds inflexibility than to the versatility of this fascinating instrument. Certainly the musical ensembles that regularly use this voice find it indispensable. In my many brass ensemble arrangements for the Washington Symphonic Brass, the euphonium part was one of the most fun to imagine.

In the pages of this book, I offer up a small addition to your ever increasing and expanding repertoire. My hope is that it will find a place on your music stand as a book. That's both fun to play and challenging. Here's to the next 200 years of Euphonium!"

Steve Mead writes: this book is highly recommended. It's very challenging as lots of euphonium-inspired classical influences can be detected, and it's all over the instrument! Fantastic to study and work up to a high level.

Funk Theory - Peter Meechan - Piano or electronic backing

Originally composed for euphonium and trombone quartet, Funk Theory became an instant success following its première on 7th October 2003, featuring the all female Bones Apart trombone quartet and David Childs in Manchester's RNCM Concert Hall. Funk Theory is now available in this arrangement with piano and/or CD accompaniment.

The music is based on two simple chord sequences - the first is heard in the first 7 bars and the second is an 8 bar sequence heard throughout the piece. The melody continually varies and develops becoming increasingly busy and difficult. It could almost be considered a small set of 'funk' variations.

Funk Theory has been performed in its various forms by euphonium soloists throughout the world. It is great fun to play and creates a little 'light relief' during any concert.  The original version of Funk Theory with trombone quartet accompaniment is also available from Prima Vista.

The electronic backing can be downloaded from the Prima Vista website: https://primavistamusikk.com/

100 Days of Trumpet Practice is a solid practice ritual. A true recipe book covering all aspects of trumpet (brass) playing. Rex Richardson establishes the structure of a disciplined routine. A concept that reveals the meticulous and efficient daily work of one of the great virtuosos. Ear training and mouthpiece buzzing, sound production, flexibility, articulation, fingers, range, improvisation, reading and transposition, repertoire, scales and arpeggios.

Renowned as a performer and composer of new, genre-busting music, Yamaha Performing Artist Rex Richardson has been called “One of the finest virtuosos of our time” (Brass Herald) “a standout soloist with the power, range and flexibility to rival Freddie Hubbard and Woody Shaw” (DownBeat), and “among the very best trumpet soloists in the world today” (Journal of the International Trumpet Guild).

A professor at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) since 2002, he has served as International Tutor in Trumpet at England’s Royal Northern College of Music and at Austria’s JAM Music Lab University.

Although conceived for the trumpet, we believe that this method has many many outstanding benefits for Euphonium and Baritone players also. Highly recommended.

    PULCINELLA - Philip Sparke

Euphonium (or Baritone) and Piano Reduction

    Watch/listen the youtube video: https://youtu.be/qJSVuaz7Vmc

which shows the full score too - Recorded by the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Air Force and its conductor Matty Cilissen. Soloist: Kevin Van Giel, Euphonium

Pulcinella was commissioned by the Taiwanese euphonium player Tzu-Hsiang Lin. Lin is a renowned soloist and teacher and a Besson Euphonium Artist. He teaches euphonium at Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, Shih Chien University and National Kaohsiung Normal University. Pulcinella continues SparkeÂ’s series of euphonium solos named after characters of the Italian commedia dellÂ’arte and opens with a long and expressive minor melody for the soloist over a brooding accompaniment. This is taken up briefly by the piano and is extended by the soloist after a change of key. A cadenza, accompanied by fragments of the main melody leads to a complete change of mood, tempo and tonality, introducing a Vivo section starting with a perky syncopated tune for the soloist. The piano then uses elements of this new tune to introduce a change of key, where the soloist introduces a more lyrical second subject over a pulsing accompaniment. The piano then takes this up and changes key to reintroduce the original Vivo melody, which leads to a short and acrobatic coda to bring the work to a spectacular close.

The composer writes: "Reverie is a small piece of music for a euphonium player. A dear friend and colleague of mine commissioned the work, to whom Reverie is also dedicated. The work commences with a dream-like melody and then explores various emotions to showcase its virtuosic capabilities".

This is a very beautiful and extended work for euphonium, and this is the arrangement with piano accompaniment. It also exists with wind orchestra accompaniment. Please contact us at euphstore@gmail.com if you require the band set.

Steve recorded this in the band version on his recent CD entitled Pulse, and it's proved to be a very popular work.

This is suitable for recitals, concerts and festivals.

It is quite an extended work, and put some physical demands on the player, with quite a few high concert C's throughout. That said, it is a work that players should aspire to play. It's one of the most beautiful additions to our repertoire in recent years.

Sonata for Euphonium and Piano - David Gillingham

    Reference:  SMESDGCAP
    Stock:  In stock In stock
    Quantity:

Herer's the Sonata for Euphoniumm and Piano by the very popular US composer David Gillingham. He is a prolific composer for the euphonium and so many of his works have become an integral part of the modern euphonium repertoire.

    Program Notes
The Sonata for Euphonium and Piano was written for and commissioned by Chris McGinty. The work is cast in the usual three-movement format with the outer movements structured in sonata form and the middle in simple song form (ABA). As the title suggests, the piano has an equal role to the euphonium and is hardly ever “accompanying” the euphonium.

The first movement features an aggressive primary theme characterized by octave leaps over fluctuating simple and compound meter. By contrast, the second theme group is comprised of graceful chord outlines and descending scale figures following modal harmony and chromatic mediant progressions in compound quadruple and quintuple meter. The development section utilizes the material from both theme groups moving through constantly shifting tonality. Solo piano brings back the primary theme in the recapitulation eventually joined by the euphonium. The second theme group finds the euphonium playing material related to the piano’s figuration in the exposition while the piano plays the melodic line, originally stated by the euphonium. A sprightly coda utilizing the primary thematic material ends the movement.

Like distant bells, the piano begins the second movement with a mixture of thirds and seconds in the warmth of D-flat major under which the euphonium plays a lovely arching melody. A transition leads to C major and the piano repeats the thematic material. A development ensues with the euphonium playing an ornamented version of the theme in compound duple meter with the piano moving in continuous 16ths. The passage modulates to D major and the euphonium plays an augmented version of the theme with the piano articulating the opening bell-like figure in diminution. The piano continues its figuration in an interlude which serves as a transition back to D-flat major and changes its pattern to pan-diatonic clusters that serve as a backdrop to a return of the theme in the euphonium. A coda shifts to F major, then A major, back to D-flat major, and then ends, longingly, on an F major seventh.

The final movement centers around the tonality of B-flat minor and begins tenaciously with a undulating pattern of 16ths in the piano in a very fast tempo. Against this, the euphonium plays an aggressive and foreboding theme following a mixture of the harmonic and melodic minor scale, ascending and descending. The foreboding mood changes drastically when the mode changes to B-flat major and the euphonium sings a celebratory theme derived from the primary theme. The piano enhances the celebration with quick octave leaps on three and four note diatonic clusters alluding to the ringing of bells. An extensive development section follows reworking both themes through transient modulations, sequences, diminution and augmentation, all of which fluctuate in mood from foreboding to celebratory. In the recapitulation, the euphonium begins with a dance-like version of the theme in 6/8 rhythm while the piano states the theme in augmentation. The two soon return to their roles as they were in the exposition. The second theme becomes even more celebratory with the piano playing the undulating pattern of the beginning of the movement in E-flat major and the euphonium augmenting the theme. There is a retransition to B-flat minor, but the rhythmic excitement continues through the coda to definitive closure.

Motions for Euphonium and String Quartet - David Gillingham

    £33.00
    Reference:  SMMOACAP

    Quantity:

There are not many works for Euphonium and string quartet of an original nature, so this major work, Motions is to be welcomed and for the ambitious euphonium player, can be an extremely useful and effective piece of music..

    Program Notes
Motions was commissioned by the Tuba Bach Festival of Big Rapids, Michigan, Ed Mallett, director, for performance by the Harlem String Quartet with Ed Mallett on euphonium.

The work is in five movements, each alluding to a different “motion.” Movement 1, “perpetual,” uses a continuous pattern of 16th notes depicting perpetual motion. Movement 2, “slow,” makes obvious reference to very slow motion. The harmony provides much of the interest of this movement with suspended figures, added note chords, extended tertian sounds, and shifting tonality. “Contrary,” the motion of Movement 3, uses contrary motion throughout within the melodic vocabulary of a blues scale and traditional jazz-like harmonies and rhythms. Movement 4, “stationary” is based on a pedal “B” throughout the whole movement played by euphonium, cello and violin 1. As in Movement 2, the harmony provides interest and variance around the sustained “B.” “Oscillatory” motion is the subject of Movement 5. The movement is based on an oscillating minor third with driving rhythms and fluctuating dynamics.

    About Brass Playing Concepts

    The Work

The art of the brass musician is measured by the extent, the intensity and the quality of his mastery as well as the influence of his personality. The phenomenal mastery of Arturo Sandoval has aroused the admiration, respect and even the incredulity of audiences, of his colleagues and of young students. Not a few imagine that there must be sorne kind of special trick involved here ...

The approach proposed here by Arturo Sandoval - as perhaps that of every artist who has made his way to success and can verbalize his experience - may appear simple. In fact, it is. As simple as is the solution to every problem, once it is found...

Arturo Sandoval was born November 6th,1949 in Artemis, province of Havanna, Cuba. At the age of fifteen he entered the Cuban National School of the Arts where he studied classical trumpet. In 1965 he met the great Russian trumpet player Timofey Dokshidser and was deeply impressed by his artistry. From 1974 to 1980 he played with the famous Cuban Irakere big band. Then he created his own band, started to travel to foreign countries, getting finally the international recognition he deserved. In 1990 he left Cuba for good and settled in the USA. He has since toured all over the world, recording many CDs and his fame is growing constantly. His phenomenal virtuoso trumpet playing and his great talent as a pianist and film music composer are admired worldwide by classical and jazz musicians.

Emile Joseph Trognée was born on 4th of July 1868 in Tirimon, Belgium. He studied trumpet at the Brussels Conservatory. After winning a European competition in 1902, he became solo trumpet and cornet at the Mariinskiy Theatre (now called Kirov Theatre) in St. Petersburg. He spent the rest of his life in Russia, working at the Mariinskiy for 25 years, and he died in 1942 of hunger during the three year siege of Leningrad by German troops.

Trognée was an outstanding musician. A well-known Russian conductor, Karl Eliasberg, wrote: “Trognée had a unique feeling of ensemble; his sense of dynamics and musical phrasing was remarkable. His sound was never forced but always bright, powerful and even in all registers. He was also a great master of very soft legato playing and well-known for his performances of the “Ring”, “Rienzi” and “Lohengrin” as well as of the operas of Tchaikovsky and Verdi.”

Trognée was respected by both musicians and composers. He advised Rimsky-Korsakow to make some changes in the trumpet part of his opera the “The Legend of the invisible City of Kitezh” (the well known difficult trumpet passage in the symphonic poem of the “Battle at Kerzhenets”).

Trognée taught at the Baltic Fleet Music School from 1911-1917 and at the Rimsky-Korsakov Music School of St.Petersburg from 1928 to 1941. He wrote several works for trumpet and cornet. His “Fantasia-Caprice”, published in Moscow in 1946 in Tabakov’s “Elementary and progressive Trumpet Method” was especially popular for many years.

The “Studies for Trumpet”, published 1932 by Triton in St.Petersburg were also well known. These 15 final etudes have been dedicated to Mikhail Tabakov (1877-1956), the father of the modern Russian trumpet school. Serguej Bolotin, the Russian trumpet player, preserved them together with Trognée’s complete muscial work. These studies, as well as the works of Vassili Brandt or Oskar Böhme, have greatly contributed, to the history of the Russian trumpet school.

    About 15 Grandes Etudes

This edition of Trognée' s studies gives us an opportunity to study the work of someone who, like Vasiliy Wurm, Vasiliy Brandt and Oskar Böhme, made a great contribution to the history of the trumpet in Russia.

Sicilienne Op.78 - Gabriel Faure Arr. Misa Mead - Euphonium Duet

Here's a brand new arrangment from Misa Mead of the beautiful Sicilienne Op.78 by Gabriel Faure.

Watch Misa's performance of this piece on Youtube.

Sicilienne, Op. 78, is a short work by Gabriel Fauré, composed in 1893. It was originally an orchestral piece, written for a theatrical production that was abandoned. In 1898 Fauré arranged the unperformed music as a work for cello and piano, and in the same year incorporated it into his incidental music for Maurice Maeterlinck's play, Pelléas et Mélisande, in an orchestration for theatre orchestra. It took its final form as part of a suite arranged for full orchestra by Fauré, published in 1909.

The duet will work great for two equally talented euphonium or baritone (with 4v) players.

This is sure to be a popular concert or recital piece.

Euphonium Concerto - Edward Gregson - Euphonium and Piano

    £13.50
    Reference:  SMGCP
    Stock:  In stock In stock
    Quantity:

Here is the Euphonium Concerto by Edward Gregson, just published with piano accompaniment.

The work exists in FOUR versions, with symphony orchestra, wind orchestra, brass band and here on this site , with piano accompaniment.

Origins (Euphonium Concerto) - Pete Meechan - euphonium and piano - New in store

    £19.50
    Reference:  SMPPM10
    Stock:  In stock In stock
    Quantity:

The composer Pete Meechan writes of his concerto 'Origins':

'Origins is in three movements, with each movement having a different subject matter, all linked by the idea of origins: the first movement refers to musical origins; the second to the origins of life; and the final movement to the space exploration - the research of all origins.

The first movement is based on a short motif, heard in the first three notes the soloist plays. These three notes cover the interval of a minor third (an interval that often plays a crucial role in my music) on which the whole concerto is built. The soloist and accompaniment interplay freely throughout the opening section, before an ostinato accompaniment appears in the woodwinds - over which the soloist sounds a long legato melody. A short cadenza follows and a return to the opening material leads the movement to an end.

The second movement, titled Harry's Song, is - as tradition dictates - a slow movement. Happy and reflective in nature, the main melody was written on the evening that my closest friend, Mark Bousie (a fine euphoniumist himself), and his wife Jayne, had their first child - Harry Bousie. It seemed only fitting that this song should be written for Harry in celebration.

The final movement brings me back to a lifelong fascination with space, and in this particular movement, the Space Shuttle Discovery. Having completed 39 missions (including flying the Hubble telescope in to orbit), and spent a total of 365 days in space, SS Discovery made its final voyage in 2011 and was taken to the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. in April 2012. This final movement, titled Discovery, pays tribute to the great shuttle whose missions inspired millions across the generations.

Origins was commissioned by Marco Schneider, Adrian Schneider and the Dunshan Wind Orchestra, Beijing, China".

    PROGRAM NOTES

Ave Maria (Tanti anni prima – Many years ago) is one of two hauntingly beautiful tunes drawn from Ástor Piazzola’s score for the 1984 Marco Bellocchio film Enrico IV (Henry IV) based on the eponymous play by Luigi Pirandello with the same title, starring Marcello Mastroianni and Claudia Cardinale.

An unnamed Italian aristocrat falls off his horse while playing the role of Henry IV during carnevale festivities. After he comes to, he believes himself to be Henry. For the next twenty years, his family, maintain an elaborate charade in a remote Umbrian villa, staffed with servants hired to play the roles of Henry's privy councillors and simulate the eleventh-century court. During the play it appears that after 12 years of illness, he notices that he is cured, but decides to continue in his role.

The movie contains two of Piazzolla's most beautiful and haunting songs. Of the two songs, Oblivion, which is heard at the close of the movie, became one of Piazzolla’s best known songs and more frequently performed, but Tanti anni prima is no less beautiful. The theme is associated with the character Matilda, a widow whom Henry loved, unrequited, before the accident, portrayed by Claudia Cardinale in the movie.

The song is also known as Ave Maria, a later name most likely given it for commercial reasons  by Piazzolla’s Italian agent, Aldo Pagani. One must agree that the new name fits, the Ave Maria does bring to mind a church organ during a meditative moment. Ave Maria consists of two parts, both with smooth, broad melodic lines to show of the composers lyrically sentimental side. In the second movement more passion and character is requiered especially to colour with the modern, more dissonant chords.

Although originally for oboe and piano, the version for cello and piano is among the more frequently performed. This version for euphonium and piano of Piazzolla’s Ave Maria is arranged by Luc Vertommen.

Three Fantasias (from Nos.7,8,9 from 12 Fantasias for Violin) - G.P.Telemann - adapted by Roland Szentpali

Here is a brand new publication from Editions BIM, for solo unaccompanied euphonium, and it's the music of George Philipp Telemann.

The great Hungarian tuba player, composer and arranger Roland Szentpali has adapted these three fantasias for Violin.

These are sure to prove to be great stylistic and musical challenges to euphonium players everywhere, for the keen amateur and advanced players.

    From the publisher:

The collection of 12 fantasias for solo violin (TWV 40:14-25) by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1757) was first published in Hamburg in 1735. The Italian influence of the sonata and concerto is clearly evident. The fantasias no. 7, 8 and 9 selected by Roland Szentpali are the most suitable for adaptation for brass instruments, while the other nine make use of double-stopped technique, a rather Germanic tendency in works for solo violin.

We see this as a great new addition to the repertoire for solo euphonium; and very suitable for recitals, examinations and competitions.

    Duration: total  22 minutes

    Difficult level: 4.5/6

Supplied with solo part in TC and BC.
