Adagio Op.85 (from the Cello Concerto) - Edward Elgar Arr. Eric Wilson - euphonium and piano |
||
|
Here is one of the famous slow movements form the world of music, the slow movement, from the Elgar Cello Concerto, arranged for the first time for euphonium and piano.
"Elgar completed his last major work, the Cello Concerto Op. 85, in 1990 in Brinkwells, the thatched cottage in Sussex overlooking the South Downs he was renting at the time. Composed in the aftermath of the great war, it has to be said that this is music for a lost world. In this, the third movement, time certainly seems to almost standstill. It is imbued with elegant melancholy, perhaps also pain, and ultimately resignation.
In transcribing the piece for euphonium, (a perfect fifth lower than the original key) there have been various active displacements in both solo part and the piano accompaniment. As Elgar did in his orchestration, I have tried to create a texture where the soloist is not overpowered by the accompani but soloist and accompanies should work closely together. Bear in mind that accents and dynamics are relative and should never be overdone. Elgar frequently uses tiny nuances in dynamics, crescendos and so on, so I'd urge performance to listen closely to some of the worlds greatest cists.
Erik Wilson
This is undoubtedly going to be a very popular work for euphonium and because of the pitch range the arranger uses, should be within the reach of most players.

Film - Andy Scott - with piano accompaniment, for baritonen or euphonium. TC only, |

Film was originally written as a movement from the commission ‘Seven Dances & No Looking Back’ for the Aquarelle Guitar Quartet.
It was subsequently arranged, at Andy’s request, by Jim Fieldhouse for brass band, and included on the CD recording ‘Spirit of Foden’s – the music of Andy Scott’, performed by Foden’s baritone soloist Natsumi McDonald & Foden’s Band, conducted by Michael Fowles.
The brass band arrangement has also been performed by notable soloists such as Katrina Marzella, and performed and recorded by Kristy Rowe.
Natsumi approached Andy about the possibility of an arrangement of Film that is scored for baritone and piano, which was completed by the composer and premiered by Natsumi & Yuki Kagajo in Alsager, Cheshire, July 2016.
Film is a gentle and fragile work, expressive and melodic, with subtle interplay between baritone horn and piano

A Portrait of Paris was written for Alexis Demailly and Bastien Baumet of the Paris Brass Band.

Arcades and Alleys (Sonata for Euphonium) - Alan Lourens - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
The Sonata for Euphonium is a traditional three movement sonata following classical forms. Movement one is lively Sonata Form, Movement Two is a quiet Ternary Form, and a very lively Rondo rounds out the composition.
This is is post-modern; it is Each movement opens strong in the stated key (G Major, f minor) though in each case the tonality wanders considerably before finishing in the home key. The work is descriptive in nature, but not programmatic.
Arcades and Alleyways explores the whole range of the instrument, from a Pedal B Flat to a C three octaves above that note, and requires professional level technical ability.
Is a really interesting work, essentially a Sonata for Euphonium.
Lourens was born in Perth, Western Australia, and attended Scarborough Senior High School, where he won the prize for music in his graduating year. After completing a degree in Music Education at the Western Australian College of Advanced Education, Lourens taught brass and classroom music in public schools, based at Kelmscott Senior High School, and including conducting and teaching brass at Churchlands Senior High School and Perth Modern School. He returned to study at Indiana University, earning a master's degree in music (in Euphonium Performance) in 1992, and a Doctorate (in Wind Conducting) in 1999, working as an Associate Instructor to Harvey Phillips and in the IU department of bands, working with the Marching Hundred. At Indiana, he studied Euphonium with M.Dee Stewart and Daniel Perantoni. He was also awarded a Performers Certificate for the quality of his Masters recital.
From 2000, Lourens has held leadership positions at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (as Head of Classical Music), and has held positions in Singapore(at Lasalle College of the Arts),[1] and in Dubai.[2] His name was also associated with a possible appointment as Head of the ANU School of Music.[3][4] In 2009, he was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA).

Originally written for an instrument called the Arpeggione (like a fretted cello), Schubert's beautiful Sonata works very well for wind instruments. This arrangement is written by the performer, David Werden, for euphonium and piano. The performance is from a live recital tour of Japan in 1989. A graduate of The University of Iowa, Mr. Werden was the euphonium soloist with The United States Coast Guard Band for more than 20 years. He has performed throughout the United States, as well as in Canada, England, Japan, and the former Soviet Union. Through FM and TV broadcasts, his solos have been heard in dozens of countries around the world. He is a recitalist and clinician, and has performed at local, national, and international symposiums. He was a member of The USCG Band Euphonium/Tuba Quartet, the Atlantic Tuba Quartet, and the Classic Brass Band. He previously taught at the University of Connecticut and is listed in Marquis' Who's Who in American Education. His efforts to expand the role and recognition of the euphonium led the British magazine Sounding Brass in conjunction with the American publication Euphonia to name him "Euphonium Player of the Year" in 1980. He is the first American awarded this honor. In 1981 he was elected to the post of Euphonium Coordinator for the International Tuba-Euphonium Association (formerly called Tubists Universal Brotherhood Association: T.U.B.A). In 1987 he was appointed to the Honory Board of Advisors of ITEA. His many solo performances and his efforts to expand the role of the euphonium in music earned him the prestigious Coast Guard Commendation Medal. He has also been awarded two Coast Guard Achievement Medals, the Coast Guard Special Operations ribbon, two Coast Guard Unit Commendations, and three Coast Guard Merit Somnataorious Unit Commendations. In 1993 he was inducted into the Pi Kappa Lambda honors society. He has published articles in Euphonia magazine, The Instrumentalist magazine and the T.U.B.A. Journal. He is the author of The Blaikley Compensating System, Scoring for Euphonium, co-author with Denis Winter of the Euphonium Music Guide, and a co-author of the Brass Player's Cookbook. He compiled and edited a series of papers by Arthur Lehman into the book The Brass Musician. He has also published over four dozen arrangements for a variety of solo instruments and ensembles. His website, http://www.dwerden.com/, has become a favorite of euphonium players everywhere. Since moving to Minnesota he has performed with Symphonia (America's Premier Large Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble), the Minnesota Orchestra, the Sheldon Theater Brass Band, was a special guest artist at the International Euphonium Institute, and has been heard on live national broadcasts of A Prairie Home Companion.

Funk Theory - Peter Meechan - Piano or electronic backing |
||
|
Originally composed for euphonium and trombone quartet, Funk Theory became an instant success following its première on 7th October 2003, featuring the all female Bones Apart trombone quartet and David Childs in Manchester's RNCM Concert Hall. Funk Theory is now available in this arrangement with piano and/or CD accompaniment.
The music is based on two simple chord sequences - the first is heard in the first 7 bars and the second is an 8 bar sequence heard throughout the piece. The melody continually varies and develops becoming increasingly busy and difficult. It could almost be considered a small set of 'funk' variations.
Funk Theory has been performed in its various forms by euphonium soloists throughout the world. It is great fun to play and creates a little 'light relief' during any concert. The original version of Funk Theory with trombone quartet accompaniment is also available from Prima Vista.

Watch/listen the youtube video: https://youtu.be/qJSVuaz7Vmc
which shows the full score too - Recorded by the Royal Symphonic Band of the Belgian Air Force and its conductor Matty Cilissen. Soloist: Kevin Van Giel, Euphonium
Pulcinella was commissioned by the Taiwanese euphonium player Tzu-Hsiang Lin. Lin is a renowned soloist and teacher and a Besson Euphonium Artist. He teaches euphonium at Taipei National University of the Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, Shih Chien University and National Kaohsiung Normal University. Pulcinella continues Sparkes series of euphonium solos named after characters of the Italian commedia dellarte and opens with a long and expressive minor melody for the soloist over a brooding accompaniment. This is taken up briefly by the piano and is extended by the soloist after a change of key. A cadenza, accompanied by fragments of the main melody leads to a complete change of mood, tempo and tonality, introducing a Vivo section starting with a perky syncopated tune for the soloist. The piano then uses elements of this new tune to introduce a change of key, where the soloist introduces a more lyrical second subject over a pulsing accompaniment. The piano then takes this up and changes key to reintroduce the original Vivo melody, which leads to a short and acrobatic coda to bring the work to a spectacular close.

Spitfire - Nathan Doughtrey for Euphonium or Tuba/Euphonium and Piano |

Spitfire is a tour-de-force duet for euphonium and piano that takes your breath away from the first flourish of 16th notes and doesn't let go until the final note. Caution: Not for the feint of heart. The set includes an optional tuba, which turns the duet into a trio.
Program Notes
Spitfire was inspired by the British fighter planes of the same name used by the Royal Air Force and several other countries during World War II. Designed as a short-range, high-performance interceptor aircraft, the Supermarine Spitfire was one of the fastest planes in service during the war. The quick moto perpetuo nature of the composition was an attempt to capture the speed and excitement of this historic plane. The word spitfire is also used to describe a quick-tempered or highly excitable person, which is also appropriate.
Spitfire was written for Dr. Brian Meixner for performance at the Southeast and Northeast Regional Tuba and Euphonium Conferences (SERTEC & NERTEC). Dr. Meixner and the composer performed the world premiere of the work on March 15, 2013 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, FL as part of SERTEC. The set includes an optional tuba, which turns the duet into a trio.

Sonata for Euphonium and Piano - David Gillingham |
||
|
Herer's the Sonata for Euphoniumm and Piano by the very popular US composer David Gillingham. He is a prolific composer for the euphonium and so many of his works have become an integral part of the modern euphonium repertoire.
Program Notes
The Sonata for Euphonium and Piano was written for and commissioned by Chris McGinty. The work is cast in the usual three-movement format with the outer movements structured in sonata form and the middle in simple song form (ABA). As the title suggests, the piano has an equal role to the euphonium and is hardly ever “accompanying” the euphonium.
The first movement features an aggressive primary theme characterized by octave leaps over fluctuating simple and compound meter. By contrast, the second theme group is comprised of graceful chord outlines and descending scale figures following modal harmony and chromatic mediant progressions in compound quadruple and quintuple meter. The development section utilizes the material from both theme groups moving through constantly shifting tonality. Solo piano brings back the primary theme in the recapitulation eventually joined by the euphonium. The second theme group finds the euphonium playing material related to the piano’s figuration in the exposition while the piano plays the melodic line, originally stated by the euphonium. A sprightly coda utilizing the primary thematic material ends the movement.
Like distant bells, the piano begins the second movement with a mixture of thirds and seconds in the warmth of D-flat major under which the euphonium plays a lovely arching melody. A transition leads to C major and the piano repeats the thematic material. A development ensues with the euphonium playing an ornamented version of the theme in compound duple meter with the piano moving in continuous 16ths. The passage modulates to D major and the euphonium plays an augmented version of the theme with the piano articulating the opening bell-like figure in diminution. The piano continues its figuration in an interlude which serves as a transition back to D-flat major and changes its pattern to pan-diatonic clusters that serve as a backdrop to a return of the theme in the euphonium. A coda shifts to F major, then A major, back to D-flat major, and then ends, longingly, on an F major seventh.
The final movement centers around the tonality of B-flat minor and begins tenaciously with a undulating pattern of 16ths in the piano in a very fast tempo. Against this, the euphonium plays an aggressive and foreboding theme following a mixture of the harmonic and melodic minor scale, ascending and descending. The foreboding mood changes drastically when the mode changes to B-flat major and the euphonium sings a celebratory theme derived from the primary theme. The piano enhances the celebration with quick octave leaps on three and four note diatonic clusters alluding to the ringing of bells. An extensive development section follows reworking both themes through transient modulations, sequences, diminution and augmentation, all of which fluctuate in mood from foreboding to celebratory. In the recapitulation, the euphonium begins with a dance-like version of the theme in 6/8 rhythm while the piano states the theme in augmentation. The two soon return to their roles as they were in the exposition. The second theme becomes even more celebratory with the piano playing the undulating pattern of the beginning of the movement in E-flat major and the euphonium augmenting the theme. There is a retransition to B-flat minor, but the rhythmic excitement continues through the coda to definitive closure.

Sonata for Euphonium and Piano - David Gillingham |
||
|

10 baroque pieces.
We all know that the euphonium was not developed until well into the 19th century, so there is no authentic classical or baroque repertoire. This is especially frustrating when you consider the agility and expressiveness of the instrument in the hands of our best players. We can be sure that the composers of the baroque era would have leapt at the chance of writing for the euphonium, and this volume of pieces attempts to show what might have resulted, had it been around.

Euphonium Concerto - Edward Gregson - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Here is the Euphonium Concerto by Edward Gregson, just published with piano accompaniment.
This is certain to be a highly sought-after concerto and one that advanced players will want to study and perform in the future.
Program notes by the composer:
The Euphonium Concerto was commissioned by the Euphonium Foundation UK and was written for, and dedicated to, David Childs. Lasting some 22 minutes, it is a large-scale symphonic work in both its structure and scale. Its three movements, subtitled Dialogues, Song without Words, and A Celtic Bacchanal, explore the full range of the technical, musical, and emotional scope of the euphonium.
The first movement, Dialogues, is concerned with contrast and development, using as a reference point a five note musical cypher (BACH – B flat, A, C, B natural – followed by a tritone F). This cypher is used in various guises throughout the movement and beyond and acts as a ‘pillar’ in an ever-changing musical canvass. The movement’s sonata form structure contrasts highly charged rhythmic ideas with a lyrical second section, where perhaps the euphonium takes on the cloak of a cello with its soaring melodicism. This leads to a central section, with scurrying semiquavers culminating in a frenetic fugal climax before returning to the opening ideas, now further explored and developed.
An extended cadenza, with brief but dramatic interruptions from the timpanist, leads directly into the slow movement – Song without Words. Here, the peaceful mood of the opening tutti section leads to a wistful ballad for the soloist, which pays nostalgic homage to another era long since gone. The opening music returns, this time developing into an intense climax, before quietly sinking into a reprise of the opening music, with the soloist’s ballad now transferred from minor to major. The movement ends quietly and leads without a break into the final movement.
A Celtic Bacchanal is, as the title suggests, a wild dance that takes on some of the character of Celtic folk music (the dedicatee is a Celt, and the composer half-Celt!). Whilst primarily being a technical tour-de-force, a lyrical central section once again exploits the euphonium’s singing qualities, reaching a majestic peroration before subsiding into tranquility. The folk-like dance starts up again, this time culminating, via a reference to the first movement, into an exuberant and life-affirming coda.
The work exists in FOUR versions, with symphony orchestra, wind orchestra, brass band and here on this site , with piano accompaniment.

Kristy's song - Pete Meechan - Baritone or Euphonium and Piano |

Here is a beautiful lyrical solo suitable for euphonium or baritone, composed for the Australian baritone soloist Kristy Rowe.
The composer writes:
“I got to know Kristy when she moved over to the UK from Australia. I enjoyed getting to know her personally, and also enjoyed getting to know her beautiful playing, so was delighted when she asked if I would write something for this project. I had produced a CD for Leyland Band during Kristy’s time with Leyland, on which she performed John Golland’s ‘Peace’, and her lyrical playing, and her sound, blew me away. So I wanted to write something that reflected those qualities.” Peter Meechan – 2013

Ave Maria - Astor Piazzolla Arr. Luc Vertommen - Euphonium and Piano - now back in stock |
||
|
This is Piazzolla's beautiful and haunting Ave Maria. This is a brand-new release from Band Press, the company owned by the arranger of this work, Luc Vertommen. This was recently recorded on video by Steven Mead, and you can watch the video here.
PROGRAM NOTES
Ave Maria (Tanti anni prima – Many years ago) is one of two hauntingly beautiful tunes drawn from Ástor Piazzola’s score for the 1984 Marco Bellocchio film Enrico IV (Henry IV) based on the eponymous play by Luigi Pirandello with the same title, starring Marcello Mastroianni and Claudia Cardinale.
An unnamed Italian aristocrat falls off his horse while playing the role of Henry IV during carnevale festivities. After he comes to, he believes himself to be Henry. For the next twenty years, his family, maintain an elaborate charade in a remote Umbrian villa, staffed with servants hired to play the roles of Henry's privy councillors and simulate the eleventh-century court. During the play it appears that after 12 years of illness, he notices that he is cured, but decides to continue in his role.
The movie contains two of Piazzolla's most beautiful and haunting songs. Of the two songs, Oblivion, which is heard at the close of the movie, became one of Piazzolla’s best known songs and more frequently performed, but Tanti anni prima is no less beautiful. The theme is associated with the character Matilda, a widow whom Henry loved, unrequited, before the accident, portrayed by Claudia Cardinale in the movie.
The song is also known as Ave Maria, a later name most likely given it for commercial reasons by Piazzolla’s Italian agent, Aldo Pagani. One must agree that the new name fits, the Ave Maria does bring to mind a church organ during a meditative moment. Ave Maria consists of two parts, both with smooth, broad melodic lines to show of the composers lyrically sentimental side. In the second movement more passion and character is requiered especially to colour with the modern, more dissonant chords.
Although originally for oboe and piano, the version for cello and piano is among the more frequently performed. This version for euphonium and piano of Piazzolla’s Ave Maria is arranged by Luc Vertommen.
Highly recommended, sure to be very popular

Vintage - David Gillingham - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
This is undoubtedly one of the modern classics in the euphonium solo repertoire. It has been used in many recitals, auditions and competitions over the last 30 years or so, since it was first performed in January 1991. Here at the Euphoniumstore we are offering this now for the very first time! It's beautifully produced in the USA by C.Alan Publications and as well as the piano part, we offer the solo part in both treble and bass clef.
Vintage combines Gillingham's intimate knowledge of how to write effectively for the instrument. This composition features wonderful soaring lines in the euphonium (ascending up to the high C's, and higher in an optional element of the cadenza) while at the same time mixing in a jaunty and highly rhythmic 5/4 section. All the technical aspects of the piece, while challenging, are well thought out and effective for performer and audience.
Vintage was premiered on January 18, 1991 at the Midwestern School Band and Orchestra Conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan by the Big Rapids High School Band with Ed Mallet as euphonium soloist.
Highly recommend, if You are an advanced player, or very enthusiastic and ambitious amateur!

Here is the new Euphonium Concerto, by Paul Mealor, composed in 2017, that was premiered and recorded (Chandos: Symphonic Euphonium Vol.2) by David Childs.
It is a truly wonderful and very difficult concerto, only for the advanced player!
The work is inspired by a Gaelic poem about lost love, telling the tale of a fisherman and his wife. She accompanies her love to the shores of the sea to wave him off; but tragically he never returns. Each day she returns to the sea and sings to him, but no answer ever comes. In the tradition of Celtic songs it is dark and full of passion and pain.

Flight - Philip Wilby - Euphonium (or Flugel,Cornet,Trumpet) and Piano |
||
|
Flight is a wonderful extended solo by the great British composer Philip Wilby.
It was composed in 1992 for Mark Walters who was then the flugel horn player with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
Since that time it's gone on to also be a very popular solo for advanced euphonium players, and fantastic for recitals, competitions and serious music events!
The composer writes:"Flight is a virtuoso solo which seeks to investigate many of the various aspects of flying. It attempts to portray the effort of powered flight, the ease of gliding and soaring, the thrill of rising on natural thermals, and the chaotic swirling of rapid descent."
Philip Wilby biography:
Born in Pontefract in 1949, Philip Wilby was educated at Leeds Grammar School and Keble College, Oxford. Wilby attributes the awakening of his interest in composition to Herbert Howells, whose extra-curricular composition classes he attended while a violinist in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. A serious commitment to composition developed during the years at Oxford and, having gained his B Mus in composition in 1971, Wilby continued to write music even while working as a professional violinist (first at Covent Garden and later with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra). He returned to Yorkshire in 1972 and is Principal Lecturer in Composition at the University of Leeds.
In recent years, Wilby has established a very significant reputation in the field of brass band and wind band music. His first commission for brass band - The New Jerusalem (1990) for the National Youth Brass Band - was an instant success and led to further commissions: Paganini Variations (a BBC commission in 1991 for the Grimethorpe Band); Flight for solo flugelhorn and band (Grimethorpe, 1991); Revelation (1995, for the British Open Championships). Much of Wilby's recent wind band music has been commissioned by the Fresno campus of the University of California, where he has had a regular residency since 1985.
Wilby has also given much time to writing for liturgical purposes and works include St Paul's Service (1988) commissioned by St Paul's Cathedral for John Scott and the Choir of St Paul's Cathedral, and The Trinity Service (1992) commissioned by Norwich Cathedral for the 1992 Norwich Festival of Contemporary Church Music.
Other recent projects include a commission (The Cry of Iona) for BBC2's 1992 series of music videos for Advent; and, in 1993, the second symphony Voyaging, commissioned and premiered by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra; Partita, commissioned by Fine Arts Brass Ensemble and premiered at the Harrogate International Festival; An Imagined Fable commissioned by the Athelas Ensemble and premiered at the Danish Radio Concert House; and a Percussion Concerto commissioned by the English Northern Philharmonia and Yorkshire Youth and Music, premiered in Leeds, performed by Chris Bradley and the English Northern Philharmonia conducted by John Price-Jones. In January 1995 Philip Wilby was a featured composer in the PLG Young Artists New Year Series, London.
In addition to concert music, Philip Wilby has written educational works and incidental music for television. The academic environment at Leeds has also fostered a number of scholarly interests which have led to a remarkable series of reconstructions of Mozart fragments. In 1985 these were the subject of a Yorkshire television documentary featuring the Amadeus String Quartet, and in 1990 they were recorded by the Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields for the complete Philips Mozart Edition.

||
|
Here is another classic solo from way back when. Stanley Boddington MBE (1905-1986) was a famous brass band conductor, mainly remembered for his incredible work with the GUS (Footwear) Band, but he was also a prolific composer and arranger.
This theme and variations solo is part of our incredible heritage of variation solos that date back to the end of the 19th century.
See a recent article on Stanley Boddington posted on 4barsrest
It's also a great test for euphonium players, especially as it's written in C major (for Bb instruments), meaning it has some extra demands on stamina.

Grandfather's Clock - George Doughty - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Could this possibly be the most-played theme and variation solo ever composed for the euphonium?!!
Steven Mead played this when he was a very young man, and has continued to play it at various intervals during his career. Most of the great euphonium players of the past have also performed this with brass bands, and sometimes with piano. Here is the original version with piano accompaniment, and if you are a euphonium player who doesn't know this, well this is a very important part of euphonium heritage which you should know and be able to 'rattle off', as the expression goes!

Hebridean Lullaby - Philip Harper - Baritone (or Euph) and Piano |
||
|
Composed for the renowned soloist Katrina Marzella and the Cornwall Youth Brass Band, A Hebridean Lullaby is a beautiful and haunting melody from the pen of Philip Harper, taking its inspiration from the music and folksong of the Hebrides; a cluster of islands off the west coast of Scotland. Commissioned through a BBC Fame Academy Bursary, this piece is one which is enjoyed and admired by both performers and audiences the world over. The atmosphere created by the score is simply stunning. It’s an outstanding addition to the baritone horn’s concert repertoire

Donegal Bay - Paul Lovatt-Cooper Arr. Judith Hayes - Baritone or Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
This is the arrangment of Paul Lovatt-Cooper's popular solo Donegal Bay with piano accompnaiment.
Donegal Bay was the first work for brass band that Paul Lovatt-Cooper composed when he was just 18 years old. Written for a solo baritone and brass band, Donegal Bay has become a staple in many band rooms around the world. It is a homage to an Irish lyrical style that has become even more popular in recent years. Lovatt-Cooper’s warm harmonies and lyrical baritone solo makes Donegal Bay a true delight to listen to and to play.
The MusicOpening with sonorous muted cornets, followed by warm lower band chords, the band set up a serene atmosphere for the soloist. The baritone enters with a nostalgic melody that hones in on the Irish Air style that Lovatt-Cooper was aiming for. The accompaniment is sparse, but each part that comes in and out adds to the overall shimmering effect. Muted cornets fluctuate underneath the soloist, with the basses playing a constant sequence of pedal notes.
As the melody begins to build traction, so do the dynamics written in the score. More of the band join into the mix, which leads to the cornets taking their mutes out and playing a lyrical response to the main melody. The baritone enters once more to play an obbligato line that is still very much lyrical in style. As the soloist begins to push into its upper register the harmonies below begin to cleverly knit together, creating a wholly warming experience.
The melodic material here soon leads back to the original opening theme. The baritone soloist and soprano cornet begin to intertwine their melody lines, creating a sense of sweetness together. Although the music begins to drop in dynamic, the warm harmonies and rich texture remains, creating that spine-tingling feeling before the emotionally-driven final few notes led by the baritone.
Paul Lovatt-Cooper’s Donegal Bay is a straightforward, no-nonsense work for a solo baritone and brass band. The simplicity in the harmonic movement adds to the feelings of nostalgia and sereneness. The solo line is lyrical, and demands much control from the soloist. Donegal Bay is a classy work that does not require gimmicks and other lavish techniques to make it effective.

In Gardens of Peace - Philip Harper - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
In Gardens of Peace was composed in response to a commission from Micah Parsons in 2014 to commemorate the life of his great grandfather, Henry Nichols, killed in the battle of the Somme in 1917.
The music attempts to recreate the special and unique aura which provides burial grounds and cemeteries-there is a peaceful tranquillity, but also a deep sense of tragedy and loss. The euphonium is the ideal solo voice to articulate this mood, with its soulful depth of sound, and its ability to saw passionately over the ensemble, both characteristics which are developed throughout the piece.
The music ends positively, with the wish that hope can come from desperation.
As recorded by Steven Mead on his CD: Lyrical Virtuoso with BB Buizingen (BOCC125)

Arban Studies 1-14 - Ed. Gomm and Mayes (solo part, piano part and 2CDs) Treble Clef version |
||
|
Here is a superb new release from Brass Wind Publications which is sure to bring a new and fresh dimension to your technical practice, with these famous 14 Characteristic Studies, found at the back of the Arban Grand Method.
As well as a beautifully producted solo part and piano accompaniment, this set includes 2 two highquality cds with the piano accompaniment (with a real pianist and real piano!), each in three different tempi: 1. slow practice 2. performance tempo 3. fast performance tempo!
From the publishers:
For nearly 150 years Jean-Baptiste Arban's 14 studies have been an essential part of a brass player's practice routine. Arban's original parts contain many inaccuracies and inconsistencies. Whilst we had no intention of creating an 'Urtext' edition, we have attempted to make each study's phrasing, articulation and where necessary, dynamics consistent with itself, without losing the character and intentions of Arban's manuscript. We, therefore, chose not to add dynamics at the beginning of studies where Arban has omitted them, as you will quickly discover the right dynamic (for you) on practising the piece. You may also, as performer, wish to change or ignore our suggestions, for that is what they are and you must feel free to do so.
This edition includes imaginative piano accompaniments written to reflect the nature of the solo part and enhance the soloist's practice whilst lending these studies also to the concert repertoire. Our hope is that you will gain more from playing these great studies 'with accompaniment’ rather than the traditional way 'without'.
The CD that accompanies this edition contains John Alley's accompaniments in three tempi. One for slow practice, one for general performance and then one for the virtuoso! Also included are stylish performances of all 14 studies by leading UK trumpeter Paul Mayes which are retained for guidance in this euphonium edition. In order to produce an artistically cohesive CD Paul Mayes’ performances are a mix of the two featured performance tempi
Highly recommended!

Robin Robin - Liz Lane - Euphonium and Piano (TC solo part) |

Robin Robin was especially adapted for David Thornton (euphonium) from the song of the same name, originally recorded by Belinda Evans (soprano) with Stephen Marquis (piano), to help raise funds for Yeovil Hospitals Flying Colours Appeal.
Words written by Jennifer Henderson trace a robin's journey through the seasons: Spring-'fearless and bold', Summer-'a bird with attitude', through to Autumn-'when other birds fly away, you're loyal'.
This beautiful solo was also recorded by Steven Mead on his recent CD, UFO recorded with the Brighouse and Rastrick band.

Euphonium Concerto - Michael Ball - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
This is a really outstanding euphonium concerto and deserves to be played a lot more than it is currently.
It was composed in 2002 and premiered by David Childs with the Parc and Dare Band.
Although active in all main areas of composition, in recent years Michael Ball has contributed particularly substantially to the repertoire for wind and brass.
The piece falls naturally into four interconnected sections. A gentle opening, marked 'as if awakening' , leads into an initially aggressive Allegro, gaining in energy and momentum as it proceeds. The succeeding slow movement is lyrical and wistful in character in its outer parts although containing a more urgent central passage this leads into a thoughtful cadenza which in its turn leads without a break into the scherzo finale.
The section now combines new figures with, in its later stages, return to the main ideas from the first movement.
This difficult and very beautiful concerto would suit advanced and professional players.
David Childs' recent recording Symphonic Euphonium II, which includes this concerto, can be found on Spotify.

The Lark in the Clear Air - Arr. Stephen Roberts - for Euphonium/Baritone or Horn in F and Piano |
||
|
Stephen Roberts has penned this most attractive setting of this much-loved melody.
Altgough the melodic line is clearly central, there are some lovely extended florid passagesWhich gives the setting a really nice original and fresh touch. A good soloist will really make this sound beautiful and free.
I'm sure this is set to be a very popular work. It was first written in 1999.
Here is the youtube video where this is performed beautifully by Katrina Marzella and the Black Dyke Band.
The first use of this tune seems to have been as an eighteenth-century rebel song. A hundred years later, Belfast writer Samuel Ferguson wrote these words, that were to make it one of the most famous romantic songs in the tradition.
Here are the lyrics of this popular song:
Dear thoughts are in my mind and my soul it soars enchanted
As I hear the sweet lark sing in the clear air of the day
For a tender beaming smile to my hope has been granted
And tomorrow he shall hear all my fond heart longs to say
I will tell him all my love, all my soul's pure adoration
And I know he will hear my voice and he will not answer me nay
It is this that gives my soul all it's joyous elation
As I hear the sweet lark sing in the clear air of the day

The beautful Sicilienne is a much loved classic melody, with a gently lilt.
This arrangement by Stephen Roberts makes it very accessible to brass players, in a nice friendly key and not too high at the high climax.

All are in beautiful stylistic settings, demanding quite advanced technique and a good high range. The last movement in particular with its rapid mixed meter writing will be quite a challenge.

Turbulence, Tide and Torque - Concerto for Baritone (or Euphonium) - Peter Graham - solo with piano accompaniment |
||
|
Here is the brand new concerto for baritone (or euphonium) composed for and performed by Katrina Marzella.
Composer Peter Graham writes:
"Turbulence, Tide and Torque can be considered to be a companion piece to my 2008 Euphonium Concerto In League with Extraordinary Gentlemen, and indeed can be performed on Euphonium (vintage or medium bore instrument preferred). Whereas the gentlemen in question in the latter work were fictional (e.g. Sherlock Holmes and Phileas Fogg), the former pays tribute to three real life women who were very much true pioneers and heroines of their age.
Turbulence: Harriet Quimby (b. 1875) was one of the world's best woman aviators, her significant and historic achievement being the first woman to fly across the English Channel. Sadly, in her lifetime very few people were aware of her 1912 accomplishment; potential press coverage was dominated by the sinking of The Titanic only two days before.
Grace Darling (b. 1815) is a name much more familiar to the public today, and in her lifetime she was lauded as a national heroine. A humble lighthouse keeper's daughter from Northumberland, her participation in the rescue of survivors from the wrecked paddle-steamer Forfarshire is well documented (a museum dedicated to her achievements located in Bamburgh, the town of her birth). This movement, Tide, develops a main theme from my large scale work Harrison's Dream, reflecting on the souls lost in the disaster.
The final movement Torque, opens with a sudden gear change such as might have been undertaken by Dorothy Levitt (b. 1882), the woman's world land speed record holder, in her Napier racing car. Levitt, who following her 1906 record-breaking achievement was described as the Fastest Girl on Earth, went on to write extensively about her experiences, encouraging females to take up motoring through her articles in The Graphic newpaper.
Turbulence, Tide and Torque was commissioned by and is dedicated to Katrina Marzella as part of an Arts Council of England funded residency I was awarded with the Black Dyke Band in 2018.

Concertino (originally for bassoon) - Ferdinand David Arr Vertommen - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Ferdinand David (1810— 1873) was a German virtuoso violinist and composer.
David was born in the same house in Hamburg where Felix Mendelssohn had been born the previous year. David was a pupil of Louis Spohr and Moritz Hauptmann and became concertmaster (Konzertmeister) at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig working with Mendelssohn. In 1843 David became the first professor of violin at the newly founded Leipziger Konservatorium fu"r Musik. David worked closely with Mendelssohn, providing technical advice during the preparation of the latter's Violin Concerto. He was also the soloist in the premiere of the work in 1845. David's own compositions number about 50 opuses including Concertinos for violin, bassoon, clarinet & trombone and orchestra. David’s most played piece today is without a doubt his Concertino for trombone and orchestra. This piece is very often used as the test piece for trombonists auditioning for symphony orchestras around the world. His Concertino for bassoon was used as test piece at the Paris Conservatoire. During the first century of the Conservatoire’s existence, the pieces for the competition were mostly written by the bassoon professors but near the end of the 19th century the Conservatoire had a policy of commissioning new works from established composers in most years. The Concertino by Ferdinand David was used as a test piece in 1881. The arrangement for euphonium and piano (or orchestra/band) was made by Luc Vertommen. Carmen Fantasy No.2 - Bizet Arr Vertommen - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
This is the new second set of variations that now exists for euphonium and piano!!
Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen is based on the story of the same title by Prosper Merimee and concerns the renowned Carmen, a beautiful gypsy with a fiery temper. Several well-known pieces from the opera have taken on a life separate to the work: the Prelude (overture), the Toreador song and the Habanera. A number of classical composers have used themes from Carmen as the basis for works of their own. This Carmen Fantasy is a virtuoso showpiece in the tradition of fantasias on operatic themes. Like in the opera, the soloist most not only have a great range, but also exhibit superior dramatic skills in order to portray Carmen’s character. Almost every technical challenge for the brass soloist is contained here or what is more the soloist must fully understand beautiful song like aspect and stylistic demands of this music. This Carmen Fantasy No.2 is mainly based on the ‘fantaisie brillante’ for flute by Francois Borne (1840-1920) which is a staple of the romantic flute repertoire. This is fun to play but not for the faint-hearted. It is a huge challenge for the advanced euphonium player. Fancy a challenge ?? Here it is! Pieces Breves Op. 84 - Gabriel Faure Arr. Luc Vertommen - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
A set of five movements from this suite of pieces by Gabriel Faure.
Faure did not intend these pieces to be published as a set; they were composed as individual works between 1869 and 1902. his publishers, insisted on issuing them together as "Eight Short Pieces" in 1902, the composer successfully demanded that none of the eight must be allocated its own title. When he moved on to another publisher, Hamelle ignored his earlier instructions and issued subsequent editions with titles for each piece.
1. Capriccio Dedicated to Madame Jean Leonard Koechlin.[Morrison calls it "capricious indeed", and notes a harmonic twist at the end "as nonchalant as it is acrobatic".It was originally written as a sight-reading test for students at the Paris Conservatoire, of which Faure was the professor of composition from 1896 and director from 1905 to 1920.
2. Adagietto An andante moderato, "serious, grave, at once firm and pliant, attaining real beauty" (Koechlin).
3. Improvisation Orledge calls this piece a middle period "song without words". It was composed as a sight-reading test for the Conservatoire.[
4. Allégresse "A bubbling perpetuum mobile whose surging romantic feelings are only just kept under restraint" (Orledge). "A song, pure and gay, uplifted to a sunlit sky, a youthful outpouring, full of happiness." (Koechlin).
5. Nocturne As noted above, this piece stands apart from the larger-scale works to which Fauré gave the title "nocturne". It would not be listed among them were it not for the publisher's unauthorised use of the title in this case. It is the longest of the eight pieces of Op 84, but is much shorter and simpler than the other 12 nocturnes, consisting of a song-like main theme with a delicate semiquaver accompaniment in the left hand.
What a super collection of music, and brilliantly edited and arranged by Gabriel Faure. Movements can of course by played separately.

Japanese Dance - Bertrand Moren - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Bugaku is a very ancient form of traditional Japanese dance music. Executed only by men at imperial court ceremonies, Bugaku reinforces the gravity of Gagaku by the absence of string instruments. Some pieces are danced with masks, others with the face bare and without make-up. The Togaku (left-hand) dancers enter the stage from the left and are dressed in red with gold ornaments. The Komagaku (right-hand) dancers enter from the right and have blue costumes with silver accessories.
There are three movements in a Bugaku piece : Jo — very slow and free Ha - regular beat, but still slow Kyu - the tempo quickens and concludes the dance. This solo is inspired by Bugaku, trying to recreate the atmosphere of this music and using traditional Japanese modes and rhythms. The structure follows the three parts mentioned above, first a slow free cadenza, then a slow but metrically regular part, then a fast and virtuosic finale. The composer has not however attempted to create authentically Japanese music, because the latter does not use the same tuning, sounds or tonal structure as Western music. This is a free adaptation of oriental music to the Euphonium. Listen to this solo in a version for cornet: https://www.reift.ch/popupPlayerCd.php?id=15028&ModPagespeed=off

Premier Concertino - Charles Gauchet - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
PROGRAM NOTES Charles Gauchet (1863—1922) was born in Liege and studied cornet at the conservatory in the class of Dieudonne Gerardy between 1880 and 1888. He won a first prize for fugue in the class of Jean-Théodore Radoux and a first prize for harmony in the class ofJoseph Delsemme and Sylvain Dupuis. Afterwards he became a teacher in a primary school and at the normal school in Liege. He was a member of the orchestra of the Theatre Royal and from 1890 to 1896 he was assistant in Gerardy's class. He conducted the Harmonie des Orphelins for over thirty years. In addition to the opera Else’a, he mainly composed works for brass, including Petit pie‘ce dans Ie style ancien (1893) for trumpet and a Concertina in fminor (1889) for trumpet and piano and a Concertino for horn. For the six-valved trombone, he composed a Romance with piano accompaniment and the well—known (Premier) Concertino with string quintet (or piano) accompaniment and a second Concertina. It was composed for the 1890 competition and dedicated to Emile Daloze, trombone teacher at the Lie‘ge conservatoire. The version with piano accompaniment was published in Liege by Veuve Léopod Muraille and the parts for string quintet were found in the archives of the Antwerp conservatoire. The Concertino became hugely popular and was used as test piece in Ghent (1892), Brussels (1894) and Antwerp (1895). Jules Blangenois (teacher at Brussels conservatoire) made a version with wind band or fanfare band accompaniment. It was soon followed by a second Concertino in a more romantic mood. A copy of the original version for trombone and piano is preserved in the library of the Antwerp conservatoire. Both concertinos by Gaucet follow the pattern of a three-movement concerto (fast-slow-fast) and remind us of a more romantic style and language in the style of the Russian national school. Both concertinos (although sadly neglected and unknown) could easily be compared with the much admired Trombone Concerto by Nicolai Rimski-Korsakov composed in 1877. The core of both concertinos is the slow movement which reminds us of the music of Camille Saint Saens and the era of salon music.

Cafe 1930 - Astor Piazzolla Arr. Luc Vertommen - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
I'm delighted to say that we can present this new published arrangement of this much-loved classic from Astor Piazzolla. Several euphonium artists including Steven Mead have performed and recorded this work, and this appears to be a virtually identical arrangements to those played by these artists during the last years.
Congratulations to Luc Vertommen and his company Brass Press VOF For now making this available. It's sure to be very popular indeed.
"Histoire du Tango" Is one of the most famous compositions by tango composer Astor Piazzolla, originally written for flute and guitar in 1986. It was Piazzolla's lifes work to bring the tango from the bordello's and dance halls of Argentina Into the concert halls of Europe and America. It attempted to convey their history and evolution of the tango in four movements, Bordello 1900, Cafe 1930, Nightclub 1960, and Concert d'Aujourd'hui.
Cafe 1930 describes another age of the tango. People stopped dancing it as they did in 1900, preferring instead simply to listen to it. It became more musical, and more romantic. This tango has undergone total transformation: the movements are slower, with new and often melancholy harmonies. Tango orchestras came to consist of two violins, two concertinas, a piano, and a bass. The tango is sometimes sung as well.

A Caged Bird - Barbara York - Trombone or Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
An attractive work for trombone that will also work well for euphonium, and piano.
Barbara York writes, "This piece was not written specifically in response to either the poem by Maya Angelou or that by Paul Dunbar that both refer to the 'caged bird'. However, there is no doubt that both poems have inspired my own further exploration and now musical extrapolation on the subject of being 'caged' and still 'singing' in spite of this... Even within the many bonds and restrictive boundaries that we often find ourselves, it still seems to be a fundamental part of Nature as both human and spiritual beings that we cannot help but sing in both joy and praise both from ourselves and to our own Creator despite the sometimes, even apparently insurmountable obstacles we encounter."

Legend of a Big Friendly Giant - Kevin Houben (transcribed Alexandre Korovitch) - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
At night The Big Friendly Giant catches dreams and nightmares in jars. Playing on his ´big trumpet´, he gives the beautiful dreams back to the sleeping children and he keeps the nightmares with him.
The composition ´The legend of a big friendly giant´ is all about this ´big trumpet´, in this case the euphonium. The euphonium doesn´t need special effects.
All his lyrical and technical capacities are used in function of creating beautiful musical dreams. As in a classical concerto, the soloist combats with the orchestra. At first they are playing alternately, afterwords they play fraternal together.
This work was created in Torrent (Spain) and dedicated to Steven Mead and Frank De Vuyst.
Kevin Houben was born in Peer (Belgium) in 1977.
At the Lemmens Institute in Leuven, he attained a first prize in trumpet (with Leon Pétré) and pedagogy. He also obtained a masters in concert band conducting (with Jan Van der Roost), symphonic band conducting (with Edmond Saveniers), composition and orchestration (with Jan Van der Roost), chamber music and solfège.
Kevin Houben’s work (from 2001), composed only on commission, comprises pieces for solo instrument, brass quintet, brass ensemble, wind orchestra, fanfare orchestra, brass band and symphonic orchestra.
In 2003, he won the ‘Sabam’ and the public’s prize at the ‘2ième Concours International de composition pour orchestre à vents de Comines-Warneton’ for the work Arcana. With this same composition, he won the ‘3rd European Composer’s Competition 2006 European Brass Band Association’ in Belfast (Northern Ireland) in April 2006.
In 2009, he won the EBBC public’s prize with the work Thyellene – ‘Battle on the Heath’ as well as the 3th place at the composition contest for brass bands during the EBBC in Belgium (Ostend).
In 2016, he won the prestigious international BUMA brass award.
In 2017, he composed his first Symphony, it was premiered by the Belgium National Symphonic Orchestra (NOB) and conducted by the maestro, Brossé.
The same year he also was Composer in Residence in Lithuania and he wrote Where Angels Fly, Commissioned for the 2017 European Brass Band Championships by Vlamo, the Flemish Association for Music Bands and Musicians. It was the test piece for the champion division during the EBBC in Ostend.
Besides being a versatile and prolific composer he is also very much in demand as an adjudicator, clinician and guest conductor. His musical activities have taken place in various countries in three continents and his compositions have been performed and recorded around the world.During the 2015 festival ‘TOMORROWLAND’ in Belgium, he worked closely with the Belgium National Symphonic Orchestra (NOB) as an arranger and orchestrator of dance tracks including David Guetta, Armin van Buuren and Dimitri Vegas. Houben also orchestrated the special composition Hymne (by Hans Zimmer) for the event.

Concertino for Euphonium - Rolf Wilhelm - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
This super work was composed for Steven Mead, at the suggestion of Bob Tucci, in 1998.
The composer wrote: "July 1997 the international tuba and euphonium conference was held under the motto Verson il Millenio at Riva del Garda. During those days that I spent at Lake Garda under sunny Italian skies, I met so many outstanding international instrumentalists and heard so much fascinating and wonderfully interpreted music, that I spontaneously resolved to compose a new work for euphonium. It would be a companion piece to my 1983 Concertino for Tuba and Wind Instruments which we also performed there. The present work is herewith made available to performing artists, and I hope that they, the musicians, as well as the public, receive it as well and enjoy it as much as they did its predecessor. This new work is also a short, uncomplicated peace, striving solely to express the love of music and joie de vivre."
Written in three movements: Allegro mon troppo; Andante ma non troppo, piacevole; Moderato con animo. A contemporary classic for the euphonium, the Concertino highlights the qualities of the euphonium very well. The opening movement features a slightly technical style with a great energy. There are no extremely awkward sections, but Wilhelm does occasionally use a bar with numerous accidentals. The second movement allows the soloist to show excellent control and features very lovely writing, especially the descending motive that reappears three times. The technique is manageable as the level dictates, but the range does occasionally create problems in the final movement. This remains the main challenge and features the most range extremes. The articulations are very detailed.
Highly recommended.

A real gem of a euphonium duet, not so well known as the famous Two Part Invention by the same composer, but really delightful and deserves to be heard a lot more.
It was commissioned by Brass Band World Magazine for Riki MacDonnell and Mike Kilroy, and exists just in this version for 2 euphoniums and brass band.
The subtitle is 'Te Hononga' - That meeting or friends from across The water.
It has a two-part structure (Lento/Fast in 6/8) giving each player the chance to play beautiful lyric lines and virtuosic playing. It ends slowly and with a beautiful mood.

Fantasia di Falcone - James Curnow - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
This is a superb extended work for euphonium, also available with wind orchestra accompaniment.
The title makes an obvious reference to Mr. Curnow's teacher, mentor and renowned baritone horn teacher/soloist Leonard. This is a four-movement suite of fantasy variations, based on a theme from one of Falcone's favorite band transcriptions: Andrea Chanier (Opera Excerpts) by Umberto Giordano. This theme is only referenced (not quoted) in the opening cadenza of Movement #1, then developed throughout the overall construction of all four movements.
Composed for the Falcone International Euphonium and Tuba Competition.
It is dedicated to Mrs. Beryl Falcone on the 20th anniversary of the festival in Leonard's name.

Fantasia - Gordon Jacob - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
One of the earliest major works written for the euphonium, Gordon Jacob's Fantasia remains a standard work in the repertoire. Its haunting opening melody, fun and quirky Allegro section, lyrical melodic writing, triple tonguing intensity, low muted section, and demanding cadenza make it a composition worthy of performance. There are numerous ossias to assist with range limitations and the technical demands will prove a challenge for many players, but this should certainly be a familiar piece for all serious euphonium players.
This is undoubtedly one of our most important pillars in our historic original euphonium repertoire. It has for many years being a standard audition work for wind orchestra auditions and examination recitals.

Concerto for Euphonium - Robert Jager - Euphonium and Piano (BC only) |
||
|
Robert Jager's Concerto for Euphonium was originally commissioned as a concerto for trombone and orchestra, But in 1996 the composer decided to rewrite and rescore the work as a concerto for euphonium with accompaniments for band, symphony orchestra and piano.The Concerto for Euphonium is a highly demanding work for both soloist and the accompaniment. The outer movements are filled with rhythmic and metric complexities that demand a virtuoso group of musicians is the second movement, while less technically demanding, requires mature musicianship because of its sensitive lines and shaded instrumental colours.
After a dramatic introduction dominated by euphonium the first movement moves into a highly rhythmic dialogue between soloist and accompaniment.
The second movement is designed to be played at slowly and reflectively. It is this mood, one of reflection, that dominates the quasi-impressionistic character of the music.
The third movement returns to the fiery rhythmic character of the first movement but this time more emphasis is placed upon mixed and is symmetrical metres so that the solid feel of the barline is lost.The form of this movement is that of a Rondo, and in the typical capricious mood of the Rondo literally rushes headlong into an exciting and brilliant finale.
Written in three movements: Slowly, Dramatically, Freely; Slowly, Reflectively; Brightly, but Forcefully. This challenging work features high intensity writing that translates to complex rhythms and syncopations. Flutter tonguing, lip trills, double tonguing, rapid meter changes, awkward trills and sections in seven flats encapsulate most of the difficulties of the work. Yet, its vigor and drive, especially in the third movement, can compensate the performer and listener for these challenges. The second movement has some nice recitative sections with ornamental runs. A strong addition to the more contemporary repertoire of the euphonium.
This work deserves to be more widely used in recitals, concerts and competitions!

Scaramouche - Philip Sparke - Baritone or Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Scaramouche - Baritone or Euphonium Solo (with piano accompaniment)
From the composer Philip Sparke - "Scaramouche was commissioned by Katrina Marzella with a grant from the BBC Performing Arts Fund. Undoubtedly the finest baritone player of her generation, Katrina was granted an education bursary from the BBC Performing Arts Fund as a result of winning the BBC Radio 2 Young Brass Soloist of the Year in 2004. This has allowed her to commission a series of new works for her instrument, including Scaramouche. In this version for euphonium and concert band, Scaramouche continues Sparke’s series of works which uses the Italian improvisational theatre tradition of commedia dell’arte as an inspiration. Pantomime, Harlequin and, now, Scaramouche draw on the contrasting moods of pathos and comedy characterised by the ‘happy/sad’ masks which symbolise European theatre. A slow expressive ballad, followed by a spirited vivace allows the composer to exploit both the lyrical and technical sides of the euphonium, therefore giving the soloist the chance to display the full capabilities of their instrument."
A really super solo, sure to be widely played!

|
A fine collection of 20 easy pieces for Euphonium and Piano. A separate piano accompaniment is supplied, and the solo parts are published in both treble and bass clef.
From the pubishers: "The pieces in Bravo! Euphonium take the student progressively through the early grades.They consist mainly of original material, with a few arrangements too, some well known, some more unusual. These pieces are intended to encourage the student to perform, rather than merely play, whenever the opportunity arises. All too often, the early stages of learning an instrument can be a solitary process. Whenever possible, these pieces should be played with their keyboard accompaniments. Hearing the keyboard parts will lead to an awareness and appreciation of different musical styles and a sense of harmony, not just the melody. In addition, playing with an accompaniment develops the pupils ability to maintain his or her own part while listening to another.

Euphonium Concerto Op.120 - Derek Bourgeois - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Here is one of the euphonium's most fearsome yet lyrical challenges, the Euphonium Concerto by Derek Bourgeois, commissioned and first performed by Wendy Picton.
Derek Bourgeois composed his Euphonium Concerto in the spring of 1990. It is a straightforward tuneful work in three contrasted movements. The first movement is in regular sonata form with a lively first subject that has a strong rhythmic character. The second subject is lyrical and wistful. The development is mainly concerned with material derived from the opening subject. The movement concludes with a jaunty coda.
The second movement again has two main themes. The first is slow and melancholy with a marching bass line. The second is more overtly melodic with lush accompanying harmonies.
The finale is brief, highly rhythmical, and in three sections. There is some complex time juggling in the outer portions, though the character of the music is light hearted. The central episode is more lyrical, with a close affinity to the second subject of the first movement.
The whole piece makes great virtuosic demands on the soloist, who for much of the time plays in a high tessitura. It calls for tremendous agility, yet also requires musicianship and shaping in its more reflective moments.
A version for Euphonium and Brass Band is available from the composer.
A magnificent concerto and a monumental challenge for the advanced soloist.

Pulse - Thomas Doss - for solo euphonium (or baritone) and piano |

Just arrived at the store is this fantastic new solo by the Austrian composer, Thomas Doss.
The composer writes: Pulse, a solo work which was originally written for euphonium (or baritone) and wind orchestra, presented here with piano reduction.
As the title suggests this piece is very rhythmic nature, Pulse represents a life and vitality, which also characterises the work. The tempo remains virtually constant throughout the piece. Even during the cadenza, played by euphonium, the pulse continues to beat steadily.
This work is dedicated to the young baritone soloist Felix Geroldinger from Upper Austria.

Symphony Concertante - Roland Szentpali - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
The Symphony Concertante was commissioned by the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra and premiered by the composer himself in July 2015 on serpent, cimbasso, ophicleïde and saxhorn. Roland Szentpali dedicates this work to his friend Steven Mead and to his French friends who play saxhorn and the French instruments.
This is a really outstanding addition to the euphonium repertory. Roland Szentpali is a supremely gifted composer, in addition to his tuba performing skills. His Pearls and PearlsII as well as his Sketches1998 have been well-received by performers and audiences. There is a freshness and spontaneity about his music.
With Symphony Concertante we see a maturing of his harmonic and melodic language, which ranks this is one of the most important works composed for our instrument in recent years.
The first movement is entitled Introduction, which alternates between some recitatives as well as bold striking gesture in an Allegro tempo. The recitative section returns at the end before a dramatic climax.
The second movement is entitled Passepied (a Breton dance similar to a quick minuet, popular in the 17th and 18th centuries.) and is absolutely charming and intoxicating.
The third moment, From Nora, once again shows Roland bringing elements of his personal and family life into his compositions, and here the music is a times passionate, gentle. it ends peacefully .
The final movement 'Play, is in a super-fast tempo, quarter note equals 240! As you might expect it is indeed fun to 'play', and you need three very fast fingers to coordinate all this at tempo. The quick figures are interspersed with a couple of andante sections with a short and exuberant finale, ending on high concert C.
This work is really highly recommended by Steve, and of course he is honoured to receive the dedication this work, along with mutual low brass friends, very active in France.

Tantalus - Kevin Houben - solo for Euphonium or Baritone and Piano |
||
|
EuphoniumStore is delighted to introduce this super work (2011) by the popular and very talented composer Kevin Houben.
Published by Scherzando, this work is certain to find its way into examination lists, competition repertoire and recitals.
A short programme note:
The composer writes: When Tantalus, a figure from Greek mythology, invited the gods to a banquet, he served them his son Pelops who he had cut into pieces. He did so to test whether his guests were omniscient. The gods were immediately aware of the food and did not eat the meat offered. Except Demeter, who could not think of anything but her daughter who had been captured by Hades, inadvertently ate a piece of Pelops shoulder. Zeus, the ruler of the gods, instructed Hermes to collect the parts make the body whole again. Tartarus, offered offered a piece of ivory to rebuild the shoulder and Rhea brought Pelops to life again.
As a punishment, Zeus sent Tantalus to the deepest part of the underworld to suffer everlasting torture Tantalus had to stand in water up to his chin, but every time he got thirsty and moved his lips towards the water, it sank to the earth. As he was hungry as well, he tried to pick fruit of trees that seemed within reach, but his efforts were in vain. Whenever he almost got hold of a piece of fruit, a strong wind rose and blew the branches out of reach. Above him towered a boulder that could fall at any moment.The term 'torment of Tantalus' refers to this predicament presenting things much desired but that are out of reach.
Kevin Houben used the story of Tantalus as inspiration for this composition.
We're pretty sure that this piece is going to be widely appreciated by all intermediate and advanced players.

Euphonium Concerto - Vladimir Cosma - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Returning to the Euphonium Store is the famous Euphonium Concerto by Vladimir Cosma.
This is an epic and majestic euphonium concerto, written very much in a Spanish style, especially the two outer movements.
The middle movement, Andantino, is beautifully reflective and passionate.
One of the most challenging and rewarding solos in the repertoire, this concerto embodies in many ways the spirit of Paganini and Liszt for the euphonium and represents one of the most outstanding selections for euphonium and large ensemble. It features virtuoso technique, intense melody, and a need for panache and flair. The technical and range challenges are formidable, but WELL worth the practice. Of particular note involves the flexibility, clarity, and tone quality needed in the low range from BB-flat to F as there are numerous sections of slurred and tongued passages in these ranges. There is also a strong need for excellent double and triple tonguing as Cosma wrote the final few sections with the violin (his instrument) in mind versus the euphonium, so some of the passages are not as idiomatic as they could be. The Andantino creates an atmosphere mindful of Piazzolla, the famous tango writer. The melody sails with the euphonium. This piece stands at the top of the list of recommended repertoire for those capable. Taking this challenge will be extremely rewarding and the only caveat involves the cost of the large ensemble rental parts (more than $400) and the piano reduction. The publisher has chosen to make these choices and they greatly hinder the wide spread of this fantastic work.
I do feel I should apologise for the cost of this work, as it is very expensive. Since its release, the publishing company Larghetto Music has sought to make this perhaps the highest priced sheet music for euphonium and piano that exists. It is disappointing. Compare this to the price of the Horovitz or Sparke concerti.
Anyway, it's here and if you wish to play it, legally!!, you need to buy it!
Please enjoy this wonderful music

Concertpiece - Philip Wilby - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Concertpiece by Philip Wilby is an exciting and demanding concert work, suitable for recitals and competitions.
It was written in celebration of the life of David Thornton Snr. (1944-2008) who was the father of the famous euphonium soloist and teacher David Thornton.
In this version with piano it is an outstanding concert work with alternate virtuoso and lyrical sections, with lively rhythms, cross rhythms and syncopations requiring great agility and dexterity. Excellent control is also demanded in the soft high passages. All in all it's a quite outstanding composition, deserving to be more widely played.

Premier Solo de Concert - J.B. Singelee - Euph and Piano (Lost Treasures Series) |

|
The Lost Treasures series of euphonium solos arranged by Luc Vertommen offers study and performance opportunities to every aspiring soloist.
During his studies in Brussels, Singelee met Adolphe Sax for whom he subsequently wrote a lot of music, solos for saxophone, fantasies, quartet and test pieces for the classes of the Conservatory. This work was originally written for an instrument described as 'tuba with six independent valves'. This is a terrific work, and very suitable for examinations, and recitals, as well as for brightening up a practice routine.

Serenade Napolitaine - Ruggero Leoncavallo Arr. Vertommen - Euph and Piano |
||
|
Ths is the second track on Steve's Lyrical Virtuoso CD, and has been highly popular. Now you get the chance to perform it yourself!
Sérenade Napolitaine - Ruggero Leoncavallo/Vertommen
Ruggero Leoncavallo (1857-1919), the composer of two such popular tunes as Vesti la Giubba and the song Mattinata didn’t have the easiest of lives as a composer. In 1899 Leoncavallo was constantly moving and being hunted by creditors. He returned to Paris to prepare I Pagliacci at the Opéra. While there he sold the editor Choudens, Les deux Sérénades (the Sérenade Français and his Sérénade Napolitaine) for 400 francs (about 2000 euro in current currency) for both songs. The Sérénade Napolitaine is an unadulterated love song that sounds to be an authentic Neapolitan folk song. In the Sérénade Napolitaine the merry troubadour sings for his beloved and begs her to receive his confession and answer his prayers, because life is to love.
Not difficult to play and sure to be appreciated by your audience!

Ich Bin Der Welt Adhanden Gekommen - Gustav Mahler Arr.Vertommen - Euph and Piano |
||
|
Another big 'hit' from the Lyrical Virtuoso CD was this wonderful piece of music by Mahler.
Here is it now published for euphonium and piano (brass band set also available)
Ich bin der welt abhanden gekommen (I Am Lost To The World) - Gustav Mahler/Luc Vertommen This is one of the most beautiful of all songs in the history of classical music. Ich bin der welt abhanden gekommen (1901) is one of the five Rückert-Lieder by Gustav Mahler. The Rückert-Lieder are a song cycle based on poems written by Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866). The first four songs of the Rückert-Lieder were premiered on 29th January 1905 in Vienna, with Mahler conducting himself. The poetry’s tone of peaceful resignation is captured and amplified in Mahler’s music. He was a master at composing music to convey complex emotions with seemingly simple melodic lines. The transparent interweaving of the instrumental and solo lines and the subtle fluctuation between inner tension and repose represent one of Mahler’s supreme achievements. In the brass band arrangement Luc Vertommen captures the subtle colours and the fragile Mahlerian orchestration in a colourful version for brass exploring the illuminating colours of a harp, the melodic percussion and muted brass to the full.
This version with piano is definitely performable in concerts and recitals. Beautiful music!

The Auld Noost - Ronald Jamieson Arr. Tony Swainson - Euph and Piano |
||
|
As heard and loved by many of the Lyrical Virtuoso CD recorded by Steve and BB Buizingen.
The Auld Noost - Ronald Jamieson/Anthony Swainson
Noost is the Shetland word for a rocky creek where boats can be pulled up. This exquisite melody was composed for violin, or more correctly, ‘fiddle’, by Ronald Jamieson. The highly respected Scottish brass musician, conductor and arranger Tony Swainson sent his arrangement for euphonium and brass band to Steve a short while ago. After performing it once with a band, also in Belgium, he resolved to record it as soon as possible. This warmhearted work simply oozes charm.

La Campanella - Nicolo Paganini - Euph and Piano |
||
|
A tremendous challenge for the advanced soloist !!!
As heard on Steve's Lyrical Virtuoso album BOCC126
This is the version for euphonium and piano. The version with brass band accompaniment is also available on this site.
Niccolò Paganini composed his Second Violin Concerto in Italy in 1826 and performed the premiere himself the following year at La Scala, Milan. The third movement, Allegro spiritoso, owes its nickname, La Campanella to the little bell which Paganini prescribes to presage each recurrence of the rondo theme. The character of the bell is also imitated in the orchestra and in some of the soloist's passages featuring harmonics. This movement has served as the basis of compositions by other composers, such as Liszt and Johann Strauss. La Campanella is renowned for its intricate and technically demanding solo passages with flashy finger work, numerous double-stops and constantly bouncing bow. It was such a crowd pleaser that Paganini often chose to perform it as a stand-alone showpiece. La Campanella has become a popular display piece with transcriptions available for other solo instruments. Luc Vertommen challenged Steven Mead to the impossible by arranging La Campanella as a euphonium solo. For this virtuoso arrangement Luc Vertommen had to convert the multi-octave original full of seemingly impossible acrobatics into an (almost) playable version for a brass instrument. Luc Vertommen was inspired by the shortened version played by Leonid Kogan (1924-1982) one of the greatest representatives of the Soviet School of violin playing. Steve really enjoyed this ultimate workout. The sound of a little bell will always remind, even haunt him, of the countless hours necessary to master this work!
Airs Espagnoles - Pablo de Sarasate Arr. Luc Vertommen - Euph and Piano |
||
|
This is the Airs Espagnoles - Pablo de Sarasate Arr. Luc Vertommen in an arrangement for Euph and Piano. The version with brass band is available on request.
Pablo de Sarasate (1844-1908) was a Spanish violinist and composer. As son of a military bandmaster he began to play the violin at the age of five. As his abilities developed, he was sent to study under Jean-Delphin Alard at the Paris Conservatoire at the age of twelve.Sarasate. Sarasate had been publicly performing since childhood and made his Paris debut as a concert violinist in 1860. The popularity of Sarasate's Spanish flavour in his compositions is reflected in the work of his contemporaries. For example Édouard Lalo’s dedicated his Symphonie Espagnole to Sarasate and Camille Saint-Saëns composed his Introduction and Rondo Capriccioso especially for him.
Sarasate also achieved some fame as a composer of virtuoso violin music. His compositions are mainly show-pieces designed to demonstrate his exemplary technique. The best known of his works is Zigeunerweisen. His Airs espagnols op. 18 is dedicated to his friend, the Spanish tenor Lorenzo Pagans (1833-1883. As his two books of Spanish Dances, his Airs Espagnols are a musical tribute to the folk music and especially the dances of his native country.

Just released, the piano accompaniment version of this simply brilliant solo by Herman Pallhuber.
BLISS - now released for Euph & Piano. First Performed in 2011 by Steven Mead for Wind and BrassBand, performed recently at RNCM Brass Band Festival in Manchester in its present form (transcribed by Peter Knockaert).
In two main sections, the first being expressive and quite slow and then, following a short cadenza, a stunning rhythmic and virtuosic Allergo Vivace. A central slower contrasting section introduces the main 'blissful' them which then returns in the finale. A huge crowd pleaser.

From the publishers, Beriato Music : Bliss is one of the most spectacular euphonium solos around. It was commissioned by the euphonium virtuoso, Steven Mead. This two-part concerto brings all the characteristics of the instrument into the spotlight: it contains a slow, colourful section that resembles a typical English air, in which the full round warmth of the instrument is revealed, followed by an extremely virtuoso, dynamic fast movement. A great one for any soloist looking for a challenge!

Symphony Concertante - Roland Szentpali - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|

Euphonium Concerto - Vladimir Cosma - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|

Euphonium Concerto - Yukka Linkola - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
This is certainly near the top of the list of super impressive euphonium concertos we have, and that this was composed just over 20 years ago by the Finnish composer Yukka Linkola, who is equally skilled in the jazz world as he is in the modern classical world.
This concerto came to prominence thanks to the performances and CD recording by the Finnish euphonium star Yukka Myllys.
It goes without saying that this work is not for the fainthearted. The high range peaks at high concert F and goes down as low as pedal Eb.
It is quite beautiful music, with a few gentle jazz elements heard. This is very clever writing indeed and this concerto has justifiably and its place in perhaps one of the top five euphonium concertos in existence.
Total duration, depending on tempi is 26-27 minutes, and the concerto is in three movements.

Euphonium Concerto - Joseph Horovitz - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
What more can be said about this famous concerto. It was composed back in 1972 for Trevor Groom and he gave the premiere at the Royal Albert Hall with the GUS Footwear Band.
It probably is the most famous euphonium concerto in the world, and often used for examinations Competitions and auditions. The first and third movements are basically fast, although always lyrical and the second movement is one of the most beautiful second movements that we have in our entire repertoire.

Euphonium Concerto No.1 - John Golland - solo euphonium with piano accompaniment |
||
|
Here is the classic Euphonium Concerto No.1 by John Golland, published by Chester Music.
It is one of the absolute classics from euphonium repertoire, and recently recorded by Steve on his new album Lyrical Virtuoso.
John Golland wrote some extraordinary music in his life, and perhaps none finer than the works he wrote for euphonium, in particular his two concerti. The first was given its premiere in 1981 by Bob Childs whilst on tour in Australia with the Grimethorpe Colliery Band.
Although the music can be divided into three quite separate movements, it is performed without breaks, and each movement has quite clearly defined characteristics. It was written quite autobiographically and the underlying darkness of much of the music reflects the physical difficulties from which the composer suffered all his life. Richard Strauss in his masterwork Ein Heldenleben had showed us the full extent of such self-representation in music, and here with this Euphonium Concerto we are taken on a rollercoaster of emotions, that culminate in intensity at the close of the beautiful slow movement, where the euphonium accompanied by the slow heartbeat of a bass drum seems to represent the very life spirit of the composer hanging by a thread. The final movement is joyous and celebratory, perhaps another life hurdle temporarily overcome. John Golland died shortly after his 50th birthday

The Four Elements (Partita for Solo Euphonium and Piano) - Martin Ellerby |
||
|
The EuphoniumStore is proud to introduce a stunning new work from the pen of Martin Ellerby. This is a very advanced work for very mature performers!
Martin Ellerby: The Four Elements (Partita for Solo Euphonium and Brass Band) Commissioned by and dedicated to the Black Dyke Band (Musical Director Professor Nicholas J. Childs) and Gary Curtin (euphonium) with funds made available by the John Golland Trust.
This is the version for euphonium and piano.
Composer Martin Ellerby writes:
"The first performance was given by these forces in the RNCM Concert Hall, Manchester, on 23 January 2015 as part of the RNCM Festival of Brass.
The Four Elements was written for Gary Curtin and the Black Dyke Band as part of a recording project of my music for brass band, released in 2015.
Having previously written a large scale concerto for the euphonium I decided to write something much more concise though still enabling the soloist to display flair and lyricism in equal measure. I aimed at around two minutes per movement, which meant I would be creating a set of miniatures, and based each on one of the four elements of earth, water, air and fire though they are primarily given their Latin names of terra aqua aer ignis in the score. The term is used to indicate that the work is a collection, or suite of pieces, and in keeping with former examples uses both song and dance forms to provide suitable musical structures.
1. Terra (Earth) an intrada set in ABABAC form in which A, for the band, is built on a 12 note row, B is a duet between the soloist and elements of the band and C an enigmatic . The ‘elemental’ interval of a perfect 5th proves dominant in all aspects of the opening movement.
2. Aer (Air) cast in the form of a fleeting scherzando - the music makes play between the rhythmic possibilities of contrasting common and compound time signatures giving it an unsettled edge.
The flavour is light and breezy, possibly somewhat oriental in manner.
3. Aqua (Water) a lyrical interlude or intermezzo , where the soloist has more of a free reign to their lines and the band support in a delicate legato style.
4. Ignis (Fire) - the virtuosic fianel celebrates the spirit of a pagan dance. Much use is made of mixed metres and the cornets and trombones remain muted throughout giving a metallic quality to the ensemble. Just prior to the climax proper there is heard a fiery statement of the traditional Dies Irae (‘Day of Wrath’) melody in the form of a band interlude.
One other point of interest is that of the percussion section which I have tried to vary in each section, acknowledging their vital contribution to the overall sound world. ‘Earth’ has darker combinations of timpani, marimba, bass drum, a low suspended cymbal and tam-tam. ‘Air’ utilises two antiphonally placed glockenspiels, a bright suspended cymbal and triangle. ‘Water’features delicate tuned percussion consisting of vibraphone, a ‘guest’celesta, crotales and a binding mark-tree. ‘Fire’ exploits most of what has not gone before with rhythmic, punchy bongoes, side drum, xylophone and timpani plus a set of tubular bells, cymbals and tam-tam in the closing stages."

Here is a famous and totall gorgeous slow melody for ALL euphonium and baritone players to enjoy.
Sure to be popular!
Song of India’ (or more accurately the ‘Song of the Hindu’) from Rimsky-Korsakov’s 'opera-bilina’ Sadko provides not so much a technical challenge as a musical one, requiring a great degree of control and accurate intonation as the subtly varied chromatic phrases weave their way over a gently undulating, almost hypnotic accompaniment.

Sonata for Euphonium (originally Bassoon) - C.Saint Saens Arr.E.Wilson- Euphonium and Piano |

Arranger and Music Editor Eric Wilson has provided euphonium players with another gem!
Nocturne and Dance - Meryn Burtch - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Nocturne and Dance was commissioned by David Childs and was written in November and December 2012, receiving its first performance by David Childs and Christopher Williams on 13th October 2013 during a recital at Cardiff University's Concert Hall forming part of the Arcomis International Brass Event.
The Nocturne (A Dream) opens with a slow, quiet, and rather menacing slow march on the piano, while the euphonium has a quieter and less aggressive role. Tension rises as the music for both instruments becomes more agitated, faster, and louder. Whatever the dream is, it is increasingly disturbing until the sleeper wakes and the tension subsides. The opening music now returns, but the menace is held in check: the nocturne fades away.
The Dance, by contrast, is a much more extrovert movement with each instrument playing off rhythmically against the other in a texture that becomes more and more complex, leading eventually to a final flourish bringing reconciliation between the two instruments.

Phoenix Song - David Harrington - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Phoenix Song is a dramatic and challenging fantasy for Euphonium and Piano. The piece was inspired by the myth surrounding the great firebird of Persian legend. According to the story, the Phoenix spends 1000 years living on earth before returning to its nest, only to incinerate itself in enveloping flames as if part of an eternal ritual. The spirit of the bird is then released and reborn in a new body. I wanted to recreate this enchanting lifecycle in music using the Euphonium to personify the legendary bird, and capture the song that the Phoenix sings on its perpetual journey.
The work is divided into a storyboard of events beginning with the bird's flight back to the nest, a reflection on the nostalgia of its heroic life, moving onto the discovery of the nest, the incineration and finally the rebirth of the bird.
The Euphonium part is highly decorated and aims to sound organic and improvisatory, particularly during the quasi-cadenza at the very beginning. Virtuoso, precise and expressive playing is required in the faster sections. The Euphonium is given much lyrical writing in equal measure to passages requiring aggressive gusto and command by contrast.
The role of the accompaniment is to reinforce the scene painting, whilst twisting and turning the thematic material, propelling the story forward. The very heavy sounding piano passages extending to all registers of the instrument reflect the vast life span of the bird, coupled with violent flutter tonguing from the Euphonium (towards the end of the work) to resemble the furious flames of the nest.
The final section is very tonal, with celestial semi-quaver decorations in the piano part and a warm, cantabile Euphonium theme that should sing high in the instrument's range, soaring like the firebird it seeks to represent.

Skunk - Simon Parkin - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Here is Skunk - one of the new Leading Edge series of publications, in contemporary idiom, and perfect for the recital use where the soloist needs a modern work with fresh original colours and In demanding in range for the soloist.
its original form, Skunk was first performed by David Childs and Simon Parkin on January 26th 2001 at the RNCM Festival of Brass. Following subsequent revisions, the work later received its official premiere on January 7th 2004 in London's Purcell Room on the South Bank, performed by David Childs and pianist Harvey Davies.
Composed in a jazz-rock idiom the work seeks to explore both the technical and lyrical boundaries of the euphonium soloist and pianist. The music is rhythmically complex throughout and following a return to the original material; Skunk comes to an abrupt end with a series of fortissimo grunt noises depicting the sound a skunk might make!

Jazz Disasters - Alan Williams - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Here is another brand new work, part of the Leading Edge series of contemporary works for the euphonium.
Jazz Disasters was premiered by David Childs, the dedicatee of the work during a solo recital at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester in 2004. The genres of music I'm most influenced by are jazz, and the "Barbaric" tendency of early 20th century composers like Bartók and Stravinsky. I suppose they have rhythmic ostinato in common, and to me, having at one time played guitar in a big band, the marriage between (in this case) funk and brass seems a natural one.
David had a big input into my piece, encouraging me to explore the extreme regions of the instrument, and of its virtuoso capabilities. It is a kind of collision between the "Balkan" rhythms of the first and last sections and the funk-fusion feel of the middle, with some walking bass thrown in for good measure. The piece should feel like a runaway train, always on the point of coming off the tracks.

Here's another great new work from the pen of Manchester based composer and saxophonist, Andy Scott.
Fujiko initially explores the low register of the instrument before embarking on a journey upwards! A beautifully scored reflective and melancholy piece.
A number of euphonium players have performed 'Fujiko' over the past couple of years, adapting the music from the tenor saxophone and piano version. In this publication the composer, Andy Scott, has re-voiced the piano part specifically to balance with euphonium, and has created a definitive part for solo euphonium.

New from Andy Scott and Astute Music an engaging, thought provoking and emminently playable piece !
Respectfully Yours was commissioned by Fabian Bloch, and is scored for euphonium and piano (and can be heard on his Drive CD, also available on this site.)
The world premiere was given by Fabian Bloch (euphonium) & François Killian (piano) on the 6th of September 2015, and recorded on the CD ‘Drive’. Andy Scott had the privilege of collaborating on a number of occasions with composer/pianist Richard Rodney Bennett, and composed Respectfully Yours in memory of RRB, who passed away in December 2012.
The composer writes;
“I was delighted when Fabian approached me to commission a new work, and it felt appropriate to write a piece that was melodic with jazz-influenced harmony that I think of as a simple ‘thank you’ to Richard Rodney Bennett, for being an inspirational musician and kind and generous person. I know that Fabian is a virtuosic and sophisticated musician, and felt that a new work with this underlying sentiment would be in very capable hands.

Adagio and Allegro Op.70 - R.Schumann Arr. S.Johnson - Euphonium and Piano |
||
|
Schumann composed the Adagio and Allegro Opus 70 for Horn and Piano in 1849. In this work he explored some of the possibilities created by the invention of the valve system which made the horn a fully chromatic instrument. The valve system also brought in instruments such as the euphonium, which the Adagio and Allegro is well suited to.
This work has been arranged and performed by other instruments, for violin and cello, for example and more recently has been regarded as a highly popular work for tuba.
This work really suits the euphonium perfectly. Enjoy it!

Steven Mead Euphonium Song Book Vol.2 - Arr.Luc Vertommen |
||
|
Here is the brand new Euphonium Song Book Vol.2, a successor to the highly Vol.1 released 18 months before.
Here we have another superb collection of beautiful melodies; some simple and folk inspired, some instrumental solos, some operative arias and within this collection are some incredible little-known gems !
It's with great pleasure that I introduce the second volume of the Euphonium Song Book.
I'm very grateful to my good friend Luc Vertommenfor for discovering so many fine works to be included in this book. He and I share the same passion for beautiful lyrical music. However, a quick look through this volume will also reveal some music of a very technical nature, and I think this is going to be a real challenge for many musicians, although of course at the heart of all technical playing should be a constant lyricism, and therein lies the challenge. As I suggested with the first book, I would urge all of you to seek out fantastic performances and recordings of the original setting of these pieces, as composers can never write down all the nuance that is now associated with these magnificent pieces. The challenge as always is to go beyond the notes, the black and white dots you see on the page. To really be successful with these you not only need some working knowledge of the original, but really try to find a true vocal quality to your performance. Not enough brass players sing, either in their head to learn the music, or out loud, to fully realise the musical thoughts they have. I was very lucky as a boy to have singing lessons for seven years, and this has never left me. You won't hear me singing in public, don't worry, but I 'sing' with my instrument every day.
Please enjoy these beautiful works, by some of the greatest composers who ever lived, and the mix of these works with some folk inspired compositions. Good luck and enjoy the music making.
The set includes the piano accompaniments to all pieces, and solo parts : TC (Bb), BC (in Bb), BC (in C)

Baron Piquant's Pas de Deux - Donald Grantham - Euphonium (or Tuba) & Harpsichord (or Piano) |
||
|
Baron Piquant’s Pas de Deux is one of a series of dance pieces based on characters drawn from voodoo lore; the previous ones are Baron Cimetiére’s Mambo, Son of Cimetiére, Baron Samedi’s Sarabande (and Soft Shoe), Baron La Croix’s Shuffle and Baron Piquant on Pointe. The four Barons are all members of the family Ghede (pronounced Gay-day), the spirits in charge of the intersection between the living and the dead. Despite this grim association, the Barons have a lighter side. All three are notorious tricksters with a marked fondness for brandy and tobacco. All dress alike—in black tailcoats and tall black hats, dark glasses with one lens missing, and carry canes and smoke cigars. The music depicts both their dark and light sides. Textures are primarily transparent and ethereal, but the atmosphere of all four works is a bit sinister, mordant and menacing.

UFO Concerto - Johan de Meij - euphonium and piano version |
||
|
Here is the superb UFO Concerto by the Dutch composer Johan de Meij.
The composer writes of the work:
UFO Concerto, my first solo work for euphonium and wind orchestra, is not a traditional concerto in the classical sense. It consists of five movements that are thematically related to one another. The opening chord may sound familiar to some listeners: This chord and the first theme are based on the same five-note chord used in ‘Extreme Makeover’ and ‘Planet Earth’ in 2005: a major triad with an added 4th and a 7th. This chord has been obsessively present in my head ever since -- I could not resist using it again! Both the chord as well as the main theme make appearances in various shapes and forms throughout the entire piece.
I Andante – Con moto
II Giocoso – Vivo
III Andante cantabile
IV Vivace
V Alla Marcia – Vivace
Jason Ham, solo-euphonium player with the West Point Band (USA), initiated the consortium for UFO Concerto. He performed the world premiere on February 15th, 2012 in Baltimore (MD) with the Peabody Wind Ensemble, conducted by Harlan Parker. Jason also invited British virtuoso David Childs to join the consortium and play the European performances. At the request of both players, I also made a version for euphonium and brass band. David premiered this version with The Cory Band, conducted by his father Robert Childs at the 2012 RNCM Festival of Brass in Manchester, and recorded the wind version on CD [Extreme Beethoven] with the Banda de Lalín.

Simone Mantia - A Collection of Works for Euphonium and Piano - edited by Gretchen Renshaw and Steven Mead |
||
|
Simone Mantia is one of the most important euphonium virtuosi in the history of the instrument. His contributions to the euphonium repertoire are significant. A composer and arranger, Mantia recognized the need to expand the euphonium repertoire and was active in bringing the euphonium from the back of the band to the front of the stage as a solo instrument.
This solo collection presents modern editions of some of the most well-known pieces in Mantia's repertoire. These editions are based on the materials found in the Simone Mantia Collection, a resource archived in 2009 by Gretchen Renshaw which contains many of Mantia's musical possessions. Through collaboration with Steven Mead, Renshaw has aimed to correct the errors in the original versions of these pieces and provide editorial suggestions that will aid in exciting performances of these works.
The titles included in this collection are: Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms, Valse Caprice "Priscilla", Rio Rita, The Southerner, Old Black Joe, Solvejg's Song and Fantasie Originale.

Suite for Euphonium and Piano (2013) - Robert Groslot |
||
|
We are very proud to announce another brand-new, and very challenging work from the pen of Robert Groslot, Just available and recently completed. It is for the advanced player and follows on from the incredible Euphonium Concerto that was recorded and premiered recently.
This Suite is in four movements: Prelude & Fugue, Toccata, Waltz and Bossa Nova
The prelude starts with a flowing melody alternating with a rhythmic hunting motif, which is further developed in the Toccata.The theme of the Fugue contains many silences. The Waltz contains motifs which the composer later elaborated further in his violin concerto. The Bossa Nova brings a very cheerful and energetic finale.
Parts supplied: TC in Bb and BC in C.
Difficult level 6/6
About the composer:
Robert Groslot (°1951) began his career as a pianist. His piano studies at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp were followed by masterclasses with Leon Fleisher and Alexis Weissenberg. After winning laureate prizes in the piano competition Alessandro Casagrande (Terni 1974) and the Queen Elisabeth Competition (Brussels, 1978), he undertook concert trips through Europe, Israel, Asia, Africa, New Zealand and the United States. His repertoire consisted of more than 50 concertos for piano as well as many solo and chamber music. Robert Groslot made many studio, radio and television recordings, as well as about 100 CD's.
Later on he started conducting: as conductor and director of the Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, he formed many young musicians from Belgium and abroad who are now professional musicians. He also appeared as a conductor with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Ulster National Orchestra, the Belgian National Orchestra and the Flanders Philharmonic, among others, and is the founder-director of the orchestra II Novecento which he conducted in concerts troughout Euroupe.
At the same time he taught piano and chamber music at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp until 2011 and has been also Artistic Director there from 1996 until 2001.
Nowadays, Robert Groslot mainly works as a composer. Black Venus, The Great Globe, Si le monde… and The Wake are some of his most important works for symphonic orchestra. Recently he wrote a series of twelve concertos for solo instruments and orchestra. He chose a variety of solo instruments such as piano, violin, cello, the classical concerto instruments, but also viola, saxophone, harp, piccolo, flute, oboe, marimba, euphonium and guitar. These concertos are one by one very challenging and inspirational pieces for the performer. At the same time they are very enjoyable and understandable for the public, as a continuation of tradition, but not without a clear and very personal perspective to music as a whole.

Calabrese - A.Bazzini Arr.Geren - euphonium and piano |

Calabrese for Euphonium
Antonio Bazzini/arr. Geren
First published in 1859, Antonio Bazzini's Calabrese, Op. 34, No. 6 comes from a collection of six characteristic pieces written for violin. The euphonium version of the work was premiered by American virtuoso Dr. Benjamin Pierce and Tomoko Kashiwagi at the University of Arkansas in February 2013. The constant mixture of duple and triple rhythms provides the opportunity to display firm control over rhythmic accuracy. Additionally, the endurance, flexibility and technical prowess required will challenge the performer to sustain a light approach throughout. -Patrick Geren (arranger)
This is a fabulous piece but only for the advanced player. It's similar to some of the other crazy encore-type piece Steve plays from time to time, including the Dance of the Goblins, by the same composer!
Congrats to Patrick Geren for finding these fabulous works to arrange.

Morceau de Concours for Euphonium and Piano
J. Ed. Barat
Morceau de Concours is a staple of the euphonium repertoire, especially for study of the French style. This work follows the standard Paris Conservatoire contest piece format; the beginning is slow and rubato, while the ending is technical and accelerates to the end.
This new edition by Potenza Music gives everyone the chance to play this famous, excellent and not-too-difficult work.

None But the Lonely Heart for Euphonium and Piano
P.I. Tchaikovsky/arr. Caldarise
"None But the Lonely Heart" was composed in 1869 as part of a set of Six Romances. Tchaikovsky used a text from a novel by Goethe to create this famous Romance. This piece has been set for nearly all instruments, so it was only natural to extend this gem to the realm of the euphonium. As is was originally a vocal work, a strong musical sound is required, as well as attention to phrasing and inflection, and a strong sense of musical expression.

Six Romances for Euphonium and Piano
Peter Tchaikovsky/arr. Caldarise
In his lifetime, Tchaikovsky wrote over 100 short lyrical pieces for voice and piano called "Romances". Nearly all of them were published in groups of six. This set is a compilation of six of his finest and most powerful Romances spanning his entire career. Plucked from their original sets, these six have been placed in such and order that they tell an entirely new musical story.
The romances included in this set are:

Symphonic Variants - James Curnow - with piano accompaniment |
||
|
Here is James Curnow's iconic euphonium solo Symphonic Variants.
One of the core repertoire works for the euphonium and also one of the most demanding works ever written for the instrument, Symphonic Variants runs the gamut of technical facility, range, endurance, and power to project and balance. This superb work opens with a flourish of technique and runs to high c before presenting the lyrical theme. There are numerous ossia throughout the work that make the very high tessitura more accessible. The accompaniment parts are difficult and thickly textured and require a good pianist. This is one of the most physical works in the repertoire and one of the standard works frequently performed.
As recorded on Steve's Symphonic Variants CD, accompanied by the JWF Military Band. Duration approx 20 mimutes.
This version is with piano accompaniment, and solo parts in TC and BC. The full wind band score and parts are available also from the EuphoniumStore.

Three Fantasias (from Nos.7,8,9 from 12 Fantasias for Violin) - G.P.Telemann - adapted by Roland Szentpali |
||
|
Here is a brand new publication from Editions BIM, for solo unaccompanied euphonium, and it's the music of George Philipp Telemann.
The great Hungarian tuba player, composer and arranger Roland Szentpali has adapted these three fantasias for Violin.
These are sure to prove to be great stylistic and musical challenges to euphonium players everywhere, for the keen amateur and advanced players.
From the publisher:
The collection of 12 fantasias for solo violin (TWV 40:14-25) by Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1757) was first published in Hamburg in 1735. The Italian influence of the sonata and concerto is clearly evident. The fantasias no. 7, 8 and 9 selected by Roland Szentpali are the most suitable for adaptation for brass instruments, while the other nine make use of double-stopped technique, a rather Germanic tendency in works for solo violin.
We see this as a great new addition to the repertoire for solo euphonium; and very suitable for recitals, examinations and competitions.
Duration: total 22 minutes

Diamond Concerto (Euphonium Concerto No.3) - Philip Sparke Euph & Piano version |
||
|
Philip Sparke's Diamond Concerto ( Euphonium Concerto No.3) is a quite outstanding new work for euphonium.
It has been brought to popularity very rapidly due to the success of the Diamonds CD made by Steven Mead and the Central Band of the Royal Air Force, and it this disc was recently crowned Solo CD of the Year 2012 by both the British Bandsman and Brass Band World magazines.
This new work has just been published by Anglo Music Press and we are delighted to offer it to you here.
On this page is the version for euphonium and piano ( supplied with both treble and bass clef solo parts).
The version with wind band accompaniment (as heard on the Diamonds CD) is also available from this store.
Philip Sparke writes about the Diamond Concerto
Diamond Concerto was commissioned by Musikverein Mörschied from Germany - Dr. Eric Grandjean, conductor - for a special concert featuring Steven Mead as guest soloist. Together they gave the world premiere on 28th April 2012 in the town theatre of Idar-Oberstein.
The commission is a highlight in the 30-year friendship between composer and soloist, which has included many mutual CD projects and concerts and, now, a concerto. Sparke had Steven Mead’s special euphonium sound in his head throughout the composition process and made free use of the variety of styles which the world-renowned virtuoso has made his own during his highly successful solo career.
The village of Mörschied lies to the west of Frankfurt am Main in the area known as the German Road of Precious Stones, which is famous for its thriving gem industry. Because of this is was decided to give the commission a local connection by chosing the title, Diamond Concerto. Each of the three movements is named after a famous diamond:-
1 EARTH STAR
is rather stern in mood, opening with a free fantasy for the soloist over a static chord from the band. This leads to an Allegro Moderato in minor mode where small motives are gradually repeated and developed by both band and soloist.
2 OCEAN DREAM
uses a varied quote from the composer’s Music for Battle Creek, including a melting slow melody that was originally written with Steven Mead in mind.
3 BLUE HEART
was written, at Steven Mead’s suggestion, in bebop style and takes the form of a jazz waltz. The quasi-improvisatory central section features a call-and-response passage for the soloist and upper woodwinds.
The Diamonds CD can be purchased as a disc from this site or digital download.
Concerto for Euphonium - Stephen Roberts (with piano accompaniment) |
||
|
Concerto for Euphonium - Stephen Roberts
The composer writes:
"The Concerto for Euphonium was written in the summer of 2011 after hearing a series of euphonium recitals whilst examining at various music colleges in the UK. I was reminded of the virtuosic potential and wide range of the euphonium and immediately started to write a movement based on the songs of a particularly vociferous (and virtuosic) blackbird in my Harborne garden. Two further movements swiftly followed and the piece came together very quickly, with the piano score being completed within just five days.
I chose to use a lyrical musical language that was familiar to many euphonium players rather than something overtly modernistic or atonal and have pushed some technical boundaries as a challenge.
The first movement is the most 'meaty' and is based on sonata form, but does not follow the traditional tonal format. It is rather eclectic in style and celebrates typically British sounds, but all the themes stem from the blackbird resident in my garden and the opening fanfare is the strident territorial call that brightens summer days. The 2nd main subject (tranquillo) is hyper romantic with rich chromatic harmonies redolent of the 20th-century British light music genre. There are 2 cadenzas: one just before the recapitulation and the other before the virtuosic coda.
The slow movement features the upper register of the euphonium in a manner reminiscent of Baroque concertos where brass players were called upon to sing in the high harmonics. It is essentially a chaconne with the solo part sounding related modal material at a faster tempo over the slow-moving chord progression.
The finale is an ebullient rondo based on the Mexican huapango dance style, which alternates duple and triple meters. The coda recalls that of the first movement to conclude with a virtuoso flourish."
This Concerto is available on this site with piano, wind band and brass band accompaniment. On this page you can order the version with piano accompaniment.
It is a very difficult work for the soloist, but very rewarding to study and play. It can be heard on Steven Mead's Diamonds CD, where he performs this concerto accompanied by the Central Band of the Royal Air Force Band.
Solo part is in treble clef only
Romanze - an album of classical romantic works arranged By Kristy Rowe |
||
|
Here is the album of music heard on Kristy's stunning debut CD, Romanze, suitable for all euphonium and bartone players.
It is all stunningly beautiful music and now you get the chance to play it for yourself.
Arranger Kristy Rowe writes the following about Romanze:
"The idea of creating an album of romantic pieces came about in 2011 while studying at the Royal Northern College of Music. I found the Schumann Romances in a pile of old music in the RNCM library during my first week of studies. A few months later, I prepared them for a lesson with my mentor, Steven Mead, and he immediately realized the suitability of this genre of music for the baritone. It was this inspiration that ignited the idea of creating an album of romantic pieces for the baritone. While some changes were necessary in the process of making the pieces "baritone friendly", I have tried to stay as true to the original composers' intent as possible. I have always been drawn to Romantic music and the musical freedom that it encourages. I hope others find the same sense of enjoyment from playing or listening to this music."
Romanze is a collection of sheet music from the album "Romanze" (available on this site, on the Bocchino Label).
Titles include:
Romanze, Friedrich Diethe
Notturno, Robert Clerisse
Three Romances (op. 94), Robert Schumann
Arioso, Joseph Hector Fiocco
Six Nocturnes (op. 186), Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda
Adagio (op. 9), Vojtech Jirovec
Nocturne (op. 55, nr. 1), Josef Holbrooke
Romanze (op. 85), Max Bruch
Solo Parts Included: Baritone/Euphonium TC and BC
Let There Be Peace - Euph and Piano - Andy Scott |
||
|
Here is wonderful new lyrical work from the pen of Andy Scott.
On 28th February 2012 a Landmark Poem from Lemn Sissay was unveiled in The Atrium, University Place, Manchester. ‘Let There Be Peace' is a call for calm, or as Lemn says ‘a press release for peace'.
In 1998 Lemn & Andy collaborated to create the work ‘My Mountain Top', which is performed worldwide & has been recorded to date on nine CDs. Andy's piece ‘And Everything Is Still', initially scored for flute & piano, took its title from one of Lemn's poems from ‘The Emperor's Watchmaker'.
Andy writes; "I find Lemn's words inspiring, and in some cases the right vehicle for me to try and capture the spirit of his words via music. The writing of this piece coincided with the launch of ‘Let There Be Peace' in Manchester, it all fitted well conceptually as I was writing this piece for the Manchester based euphonium player Aaron Rivkin. Aaron had won the Open Class in the inaugural Foden's Band Solo Competition. In my role as Composer in Residence I was to compose a short piece for the competition winner as part of the prize."
The music mirrors the form of the poem, three main sections, with euphonium cadenzas linking these sections. An overall yearning for tranquility is tested in the cadenzas, with an insistency and potential conflict, however calm prevails. World Premiere given by Aaron Rivkin & Iva Navratova at the International Tuba & Euphonium Conference 2012 (Artistic Director Steven Mead), Brucknerhaus, Linz, Austria on 25th June 2012.

Move Their Mind - Euph and Piano - Stan Nieuwenhuis |
||
|
Here is a brand-new solo that is set to become a great target for all ambitious and advanced euphonium players.
Stan Nieuwenhuis' Move There Mind was commissioned by Glenn Van Looy. For his first solo album he was looking for new interesting euphonium solos written by young composers, to expand the existing repertoire. Move There Mind became the title track of Glenn's first CD, that he recorded with the Gunnedah Shire Band in Australia in 2011.
Move There Mind symbolises the quest for a new sound and style for the euphonium. It's a challenging piece that consists of 3 parts. A furious opening pushes the soloist to the limit of range and speed. The dramatic introduction mellows into the slow melancholic 2nd movement. Despite the calmness there is unease to be heard through grace notes and fast runs. As earlier movements move from one to another without a break with the theme of the final movement gradually introduced through wide intervals, and multi-phonics in the lower range at high speed. We hear the theme disguised in various forms before leading to a dramatic climax. This is followed by a return of the theme before the music rushes to a chaotic finale.
This solo is available with piano accompaniment (here), and also with brass band accompaniment (to be found elsewhere on this site).
Solo parts are supplied in: treble clef, bass clef in C, bass clef in Bb

Elegie op.30 for euphonium and piano - Henri Vieuxtemps arr. Patrick Geren |
||
|
Elegie, or elegy, refers to a song expressing sorrow or lamentation for someone deceased. More simply, a sad song. Vieuxtemp's Elegie, Op. 30 was composed in 1854 originally for viola and piano. Transcriptions by the composer for violin and cello followed. This arrangement is set for euphonium and piano. It allows the soloist to show off their beautiful tone and fluidity in expressive phrases throughout. While the piece as a whole is not technically challenging, there are moments of virtuosity that require skilled technique and delicacy for the soloist and accompanist. The cadenza and "a piacere" sections are purposefully left without directional phrasing for the soloist to develop their own interpretation. There is one brief opportunity of extending technique for the soloist to utilize multiphonics.
--Patrick Geren

Milori Blue (piano) - Jonathan Newman |
||
|
Named after a lush and misty pigment, "Milori Blue" is a sonata for solo euphonium in the tradition of the many contemporary "color" pieces I always enjoy. In three movements (a sontata-like fast/slow/fast structure), the work plays with moods of "blue," both harmonic and evocative. Written for euphoniumist Pat Stuckemeyer, "Milori Blue" was premiered at the 2010 International Tuba-Euphonium Association Conference.

Solo parts included: Euphonium TC, Euphonium BC
Pearls II - Roland Szentpali |
||
|
Pearls 2 was commissioned by the 2008 Euphonium Foundation Commission Project Donors, written for Adam Frey. This is the sequel piece to the every-popular Pearls Suite. While still true to the original format, Pearls II is more difficult in terms of range and flexibility. A great piece by a great composer!
This was recorded by Steve on the 'Pearls' CD, with the Central Band of the Royal Air Force
Concert Piece no.1 - Joseph Turrin |
||
|
Written for and commissioned by Jason Ham, Principal Euphonium with the US Military Academy Band at West Point (USA). I wanted to write something technically challenging yet had sections of expressiveness. Since the euphonium is such a versatile instrument in regard to both technique and expressiveness I found myself writing this piece rather quickly. I will admit that while composing the piece I thought of the composer Bartok. Not only because I have always been attracted to his music but for the fact that Jason Ham was to premiere the work in Hungary. So I must admit to this bit of influence throughout. Concert Piece No. 1 is also a work were both instruments (euphonium and piano) each share an equal part.
Joseph Turrin, Nov. 2010, Clifton, USA
The Concert Piece No. 1 was first recorded by Steven Mead and was recently selected as the first round piece for ITEC2012 in Linz, Austria.

Symphonic Rhapsody for Euphonium - Edward Gregson |
||
|
A note by the composer:
'The Symphonic Rhapsody was published in 1976, although the genesis of the piece dates back to the early '60s when I was a teenager and played the euphonium in a Salvation Army band. The work incorporates an old gospel song - 'So we'll roll the old chariot along' - into a symphonically structured form. Motifs from the gospel song permeate the rest of the musical material so that the work hopefully has a unified whole. The 'variations' are less actual variations on the tune itself, but more a comment on certain melodic aspects.
Although the writing is naturally virtuosic in a way which is obvious for such a solo instrument within the brass band, it never the less unfolds many more lyrical aspects of the instrument's capabilities. Towards the end of the piece the tune is heard once again in its full version, leading to a coda where the euphonium takes centre stage in a bravura manner.'
This fantastic piece is now finally available with piano accompaniment thanks to a skillful reduction by Brian Bowen. Make sure you get your hands on this quickly!!
A La Suite Classique - Ito Yasuhide |
||
|
A la Suite Classique is a seven-movement work by Yasuhide Ito. Various dance forms are presented with a twist - Allemande in the form of a Tango, Sarabande in the form of a Chaconne. Truly an interesting and challenging piece!
As recorded by Steve on World of the Euphonium Vol.5!
Adagio and Rondo (PIano) - Mozart arr.Wilby & Childs |
||
|
One of Mozart's best-loved and most performed pieces is the lively ‘Rondo Alla Turca' from the Piano Sonata in A minor, K331, written in Paris in 1778.
In this arrangement the Rondo is preceded by a little-known adagio, K580a, which existed previously as a fragment scored for solo clarinet and three basset horns.
This completed version of the adagio is in sonata form, its main theme closely resembling Mozart's famous motet Ave verum corpus.
Allegro Appassionato, Op. 43 (Piano) - Saint-Saëns/arr. Luc Vertommen |
||
|
The Allegro Appassionato opus 43 for cello and orchestra was the first work that Camille Saint-Saëns wrote after marrying Marie Laurie Emilie Truffot on February 3th, 1875. Saint-Saëns claimed to compose music as naturally as ‘an apple tree produces apples' The Allegro Appassionato was composed around the same period as his more famous Fourth Piano Concerto, the Danse Macabre and the String Quartet. The piece remains very popular amongst cellists these days mainly because of its ‘showy character' with a lot of rising semi-quavers in the first theme. Although the piece breathes the romantic atmosphere it is fast moving and virtuoso. This delectable miniature creates the impression that it could go on forever, and it seems to have a real dynamo of energy in its relatively short time span. There are only very small sections of calm in this exciting work.

Andante and Rondo (piano) - Capuzzi arr.Wilby & Childs |
||
|
Capuzzi was an Italian violinist and composer who worked in Venice in the 1780s. His Concerto for Double Bass is charming and sports simple lines, crisp rhythms, and elegance of form. As a result, it is a great favourite.
An ideal addition to recital and exam programmes, the present version of the second and third movements is perfect for young players and professionals alike, and fills a substantial hole in the euphonium repertoire of eighteenth century classics.
Andante Cantabile (Piano) - Tchaikovsky/arr. Luc Vertommen |
||
|
The Euphonium Virtuoso Collection is a new series of euphonium solos arranged by Luc Vertommen especially for Steven Mead and offers exciting study and performance opportunities for every aspiring soloist.
Top quality arrangements available in different versions for soloist and brass band, symphonic wind band or piano accompaniment.
Tchaikovsky's ‘Andante Cantabile' is one of the most famous and inspiring romantic movements. Is was either the singing of a workman or baker - there are two versions of the story - that introduced Tchaikovsky to the folk melody that he immortalized in his slow movement of his String Quartet nr 1, opus 11, composed in 1871. Clearly he was not put off by the tune's unromantic words, ‘Vanya sat on the divan and smoked a pipe of tobacco'. An immediate hit, the movement was quickly extracted from the quartet and published in numerous arrangements through which it became one of Tchaikovsky's most famous short works. It didn't only inspire Johan De Meij for a fantastic and extreme make-over (see recent brass band test-piece!) , Tchaikovsky himself made an arrangement for cello and string orchestra sometime between 1886 and 1888 for cellist Wilhelm Fitzenhagen (1848-1890) who premiered the Rococo Variations in 1877.

Apres un Reve – Faure/arr. Mead |
||
|
Sometimes the simplest melodies are the most beautiful and Faure certainly can claim to have produced one of the world's most enduring melodic gems. Aprés un Rêve adapts so well for many instruments by suits the euphonium particularly.
Arioso and Allegro (Piano) - Fiocco arr.Wilby & Childs |
||
|
Joseph Hector Fiocco (1703-41) was the most famous member of a family of Belgian musicians. As well as being a church musician, Joseph was a violin maker, professor of Latin and Greek, and a distinguished harpsichord player.
His famous allegro, originally written for harpsichord, lies well for the euphonium. It requires a steady tempo throughout its compass and dynamic range, and is ideal for improving technique and stamina.
The lyrical arioso demands well-shaped phrases and fine breath control.
Aubade - Philip Sparke |
||
|
A beautiful melody from the pen of Philip Sparke. Not challenging technically, but a beautiful melody in itself.
Auld Lang Syne for Euphonium and Piano - Simone Mantia |
||
|
Simone Mantia, former soloist with 'Sousa and His Band' authored many pieces for euphonium. Auld Lang Syne is one of his most popular and technically difficult theme and variation solos. Now it has just recently come back into print with this new edition by Matthew White and Steven Mead. Enjoy this Mantia classic here for a great price!

Believe Me If All Those Endearing Young Charms - arr. Boddington |
||
|
This classic solo has been reset by Stanley Boddington. Enjoy a piece of euphonium history while playing this gem.
Blue Bells of Scotland - Arthur Pryor/arr. Sparke |
||
|
This classic solo has been reset by Philip Sparke in to concert Eb. Whilst still maintaining the integrity of Pryor's original manuscript, Sparke updates the solo with all-new challenges for the performer. This is definitely a great arrangement of this solo that has proven the test-of-time.
Bravura (piano) - Peter Graham |
||
|
Bravura is a companion piece to the composer's earlier euphonium display piece Brillante, utilising the same traditional 19th century "fantasy variation" structure, familiar to generations of brass soloists. Folk songs from the four corners of Great Britain are featured; Oranges and Lemons, (England), The Blue Bells of Scotland, The Minstrel Boy (Ireland) and the famous Welsh anthem Men of Harlech.
The solo is a conflation of the original version, written for the 2002 Royal Albert Hall Gala Concert, which followed the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain. On that occasion the combined talents of virtuosi David Childs, Derick Kane, Steven Mead and David Thornton (with guests Robert and Nicholas Childs) were on display, each personalising the cadenza section towards the end. This version incorporates a published cadenza, though soloists should feel free to improvise their own material at this point.
Now finally available in a version with piano accompaniment! An absolute cracker get your hands on it now!!!

Fantasy on Rule Britannia
By Gaslight - Tadeusz Kassatti |

|
Check out this exciting recital and competition piece as recorded by Steve on the 4th volume of the world of the euphonium series!
By The Waterside - Fauré arr.Wilson |
||
|
There are not many works written or arranged expressly for the baritone horn (as opposed to the euphonium) so Eric Wilson's arrangement of this lovely Fauré melody is a welcome one.
The slightly smaller, more intimate tone, of the baritone is perfectly suited to this lilting, reflective piece.
ABRSM Baritone & Euphonium Grade 4
Cantabile - Paganini/arr. Goff Richards |
||
|
Goff Richards arrangement of the Paganini Cantabile is a great lyrical showpiece. This short work will be a great addition to any program!
Caoine (Lament) - Stanford arr.Wilby & Childs |
||
|
Caoine (pronounced ‘keen') is the beautiful lament which forms the expressive second movement of Stanford's Clarinet (or Viola) Sonata, written in 1912.
Its long, meandering and sometimes unpredictable phrases need detailed preparation for concert performances, and its musical rewards are unsurpassed.
Capriccio - Jean Balissat |
||
|
Jean Balissat's Capriccio for euphonium and orchestra (2005) was commissioned by the High School for Music, Berne (Switzerland) for the Soloists' Diploma Examination for Roland Fröscher, a brilliant young euphonium virtuoso. The Capriccio consists of four movements, played attacca: the first, marked Moderato, presents the main theme in the form of a recitative which is then developed lyrically. The motifs of soloist and orchestra are refined and interwoven until they culminate in a vehement climax, with violent glissandi from the euphonium being answered three times by the orchestra. The Lento espressivo fulfils a desire of the soloist for long expressive cantilenas, for which he has a particular fondness. The Finale is a technical challenge for the soloist. In this movement, which is full of contrasts, the work's principal themes are combined, to a greater or lesser degree. The Capriccio was given its première on 1st July 2005 in the Great Hall of the Casino in Berne, with Roland Fröscher (euphonium) accompanied by the Berne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Matthias Kuhn.
Carmen Fantasy (Piano) - Georges Bizet/arr. Luc Vertommen |
||
|
Georges Bizet's opera Carmen is based on the story of the same title by Prosper Mérimée and concerns the renowned Carmen, a beautiful gypsy with a fiery temper. Several well-known pieces from the opera have taken on a life separate to the work : the Prelude (overture), the Toreador song and the Habanera. A number of classical composers have used themes from Carmen as the basis for works of their own. This Carmen Fantasy is a virtuoso showpiece in the tradition of fantasias on operatic themes. Like in the opera, the soloist must not only have a great range, but also exhibit superior dramatic skills in order to portray Carmen's character. Almost every technical challenge for the Brass soloist is contained here or what is more the soloist must fully understand beautiful song like aspect and stylistic demands of this music.
solo parts included: TC, BC, BC Bb

Jules Demersseman (1833-1866) was in his time a remarkable flautist and noted composer. Today this little known composer is only 'famous' with flute and saxophone players and his name is not mentioned in most reference books. Demersseman wrote many works for trombone with six independent valves, which is a modern-cousin to the euphonium. Through the work of editors, Luc Vertommen and Gery Dumoulin, the entire catalog is now available in two volume editions. These are spectacular editions for study and practice. Very well done, indeed!

Concerto for Euphonium (Piano) - Kenneth Downie |
||
|
An accessible and enjoyable showpiece for soloists of all ages. The concerto's three movements are in a tuneful, melodic style and bravura passages are mixed with others designed to exploit the singing qualities of the instrument.
The first movement is a vigorous allegro in which the short, pithy motifs of the opening theme contrast with the broad sweep of the second subject. A short cadenza-like passage yields to a high-spirited episode before a reprise of the opening ends the movement quietly.
The second movement opens with a warm, romantic melody which is soon taken up by the soloist. A short animated section gives way to the earlier tutti theme, this time with passionate decoration from the soloist before the music gently unwinds in a tranquil coda.
The finale has a bouncy, festive feel. After the first subject runs its course there is a brief journey through a more contrapuntal style, before a spirited presto moves into a compound episode before returning to the opening idea. A jubilant coda brings the work to a conclusion.
Duration: 13 minutes
Also available with brass band accompaniment.
Concerto for Euphonium (Piano) - Philip Wilby |
||
|
Completed on New Year's Eve 1995, Philip Wilby's concerto has already established itself as one of, if not the, greatest concerto for the instrument written so far.
Its extended length seeks to explore that fine combination of sustained lyricism and explosive virtuosity which typifies the modern euphonium in the most expert hands. There are two parts which divide into four movements.
Part One opens with a sonata structure movement which alternates between a melodic style and some rapid passage work. The intention of the music is a firm and cerebral development of the opening fourth-based motifs. At the tranquil conclusion of this music the second movement bursts in - Zeibekikos - a rapid and extrovert Greek Island dance complete with plate smashing!
Part Two re-examines some of the opening material surrounded by cadenzas, and centred upon a short and sustained adagio. The final movement opens with a rapid fugal section which moves inexorably towards a climactic return of the music and tonality of the opening.
